MaelstromIslander's Reintroduction
Ayliffe and 14 others reacted to Fush for a blog entry
Okay, I'm not even sure where to start tackling this... At first your silly arguments and general attitude amused me, but it grows tedious. What I see here, is a log of every time someone has done something you didn't like, going back crist-knows-how-many years. Not only is that a bit incredibly petty and a bit unsettling, but it's also a very unhealthy mindset. Of course it's going to feel like the whole world is against you and that everyone hates you if you keep track of every time someone has ever upset you. This is far from the toxic community you believe it to be, you've only tricked yourself into thinking that by focusing all your attention on the bad moments to the exclusion of all else. Do you not see the inherent hypocrisy here? You are always begging people to forget the things you've done, to start over, to give you a clean slate on which to build a new, better reputation, yet you hold grudges against people for little things they did one a long time ago. You want us to believe you've changed, yet here you are judging other people on things long past. You really need to take a good hard look at yourself if you still think that the community is the problem. You keep saying you've changed, but the very fact that you've posted this blog proves that you have not. You can't just tell people you're a different person and then expect them to treat you like one, you have to show them that you're a better person now. Which, to be frank, you have failed to ever do. You've done a pretty good job of giving people a poor impression of yourself, and you can't just expect them to forget that impression overnight. I've tried to defend you in the past, thinking the other members have been a bit too hard on you, but every passing interaction makes me lose faith in you a little more. The members here can be a bit hard on new members, and I'm not going to condone that, but can you blame them? We get hundreds of new members every week, most of which never post a single thing, and the ones that do tend to be trolls are little kids that don't know how to use proper grammar or spelling and bump years-old topics with irrelevant posts. It gets tiring having to put up with them, but some of them eventually get better and integrate into the core community, gaining the respect of the other members who in turn treat them as an equal. You have, and I know you are going to hate me for saying this but it's the truth, never grown out of that "annoying new member" phase. I have more that I want to say, but I'm having trouble finding the right words for it. Try to listen to what I have to say, and don't dismiss it as me "bullying" you. No one is being mean to you on purpose, we are only trying to help you be a better member of the community, but when you don't cooperate it's very frustrating. That's all I can really say for now. A simple mistake in creating game levels
BerixMaster2010 and 11 others reacted to McJobless for a blog entry
Ben...what do you think half of game testing is? The whole point of testing is to make sure that the game is stable and reacts to any player input appropriately, and that the player can continue to play the game at any time without having to hard reset the game. I mean, this is confusing because it's EXTREMELY obvious. I don't think there's a game designer alive who doesn't know this. It's the same reason we get players to do very weird tests, such as jump in a single spot 5000 times or make bets on whp can break the level's physics and use a tree to jump out of the level bounds. Furthermore, those solutions...those are not "designer" solutions, they're "player solutions". That's how we would try and justify to the player that the story ingame works, but in terms of the physical gameplay elements, we have special tools such as kill volumes, blocking volumes (invisible walls) or teleports. It's simply impossible to test the game to get every bug out. A lot of players out there are simply playing to break the game. Others will play the game in ways the designers really didn't intend, and those developers may believe it's the players fault for causing such issues. I personally don't agree with them, but the point is that a lot of game testing is about this one issue. It's not some big secret. It's what we do normally.12 points -

Apologies for replying to a very old thread gents, came across this while checking out some old reviews. As jamesster mentions above I did a track for LR2 as well as SFX for Lego Island II. WaveConvertPro was a tool in use when I arrived at Silicon Dreams Studio, as I recall there were two specific qualities that it was considered good for. The first, was the ability to link properly with 'Waves' sound processing capabilities, they were considered excellent professional plugins at the time. The second was the power and adaptability of the batch processing tools. A lot of the work at Silicon Dreams Studios was concerned with their football titles - UEFA Champions League and Dreamcast Soccer. Due to the 'commentary' soundbites, as well as standard sound FX, these games had several hundreds of individual clips, some of them needing clever concatenation and naming conventions so you didn't get lost all the time. WaveConvertPro was great for this. As for usage in the title above. We were given a damned small amount of memory for the soundbanks, 4MB as I recall. WaveConvertPro would definitely have been used to reduce the sample sizes. The tunes were actually created using the now defunct MS DirectMusic system, which I adored. Usually used for music that adapts, it was used in this case to deliver straight tunes to final product. Steve M11 points -

Playing games is really only a quarter of the job, most the work is in the commentary. It has to be high quality and legitimately funny and unscripted... or else it will just be throw into the pile of "can't make it" of which many thousands of LP'ers currently sit. Le717 is right though, MC LP's are way overdone now.9 points

Huh, I think you're over reacting a bit, and there's some kind of misunderstanding, as of lately I've done nothing but try to have pleasant conversations with you, but you almost always explode about something or declare that it's an argument and either leave or ignore me, and when I try to tell you to chill and take a breather you call that "micromanaging" when all I'm trying to do is give a friendly suggestion. The only time I can think of that suggested something that wasn't chill was when you and Nog where sitting afk in the chat box with the 5 person limit where I politely asked you to not both be afk in order to free up space, in which you again declared to be an argument, and left, when it was a discussion, and to use a tongue when you joke (which honestly does help, but I sometimes miss that it's a joke still) (correct me if I'm wrong) While you and I have had disagreements in the past, I Think we can eventually look past that and become able to have normal conversations again. The last three CONVERSATIONS we had together we're quite pleasant until you declared them to be an argument and left to ignore me. I mean really for the most part I've had nothing but good intentions when I've tried to converse with you and if you think there's something that needs to be discussed between the two of us please PM me. This poor attempt at "shaming" or "attacking" me for something that could be a misunderstanding is just going to make you look more immature at this point.8 points -

Oh yes, because Minecraft LPs are some of the most original, uncopied, and efficient use of my time! I love watching someone kill their nth creeper in 10 minutes and carry on with their normal server activities! That is so much fun! Come on, this is RRU. More creative stuff than Minecraft LPs can be done. I know it. Those things are as numerous as bad fanfics, and are often done by the same age group, too. I watch few LPs, and Minecraft ones are a type I never touch because they are so numerous and repetitive they have lost all magic they might once have had (not to mention many people own Minecraft these days). Every once in a blue moon I do a LP (if you've never seen my LPs, go to my channel and watch one. Just prepare yourself.). Who knows, maybe that can be a feature. That would probably be better than a Minecraft LP. tl;dr Minecraft LPs are some of the most cliche, overly done video game uploads on the Web. I know RRU too well to know that something more original can be devised if such an "RRU Tube" project ever takes off.8 points

I'm not quite sure what has happened with the status of the video: when they first had Emmet and Wyldstyle in it, it was taken down by Warner Bros. for using a trademarked minifigure... or something. It was interesting to read the comments. a) There were hordes of them, and probably when I'd finished a page another would pop up. b) About 1% of the comments were "yes i must stop supporting lego they are ruining the arctic pls help," about 60% were 'This is absolute rubbish' (and about one quarter of that 60% made a long rant about how it was rubbish, and half of that quarter said 'Lego comes from petroleum. Imagine how much petroleum from the Arctic you'd need to make that video... hypocrites' ), 15% said 'You're right, Shell shouldn't be drilling in the Arctic, but why take it out on a toy company?' and the remaining 14% I have failed to allocate accurately. What even is Lego doing with Shell anyway? Last time I checked it was just a bunch of Ferrari sets - oh yes, that's what that 14% was - saying 'Lego isn't partnering with Shell - it's partnering with Ferrari. I recall having a long talk with Ayliffe and Ayliffe Arthuriel about this; I think Ayliffe completely smashed their argument on their blog or somewhere and I can bet you he'll find the link.8 points -

An Idea For a Game
Ben24x7 and 6 others reacted to McJobless for a blog entry
A very common rookie-issue, when making games, is to believe that the story is the most crucial part of the design process, or that people care for the story above anything else. You're planning out for a video game, not a book. It's nice that you have an idea of theme and characters, but the point of making a game is to make some fun gameplay. This should be your entire focus.7 points -

LIKE ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS CHANGE ONE ATTRIBUTE NEAR THE TOP OF THE LXFML FILE THEN OPEN THE LXFML FILE AND THEN MOVE THE BRICK MENU A TEENY TINY BIT AND THEN EVERYTHING WILL BE HUNKY-DORY. LIKE I WAS RAIDING THE .LIF FILES, SMASHING THROUGH OPENGL SHADERS AND INJECTING MY OWN PERSPECTIVE MATRICIES WHILE ALL I HAD TO IN FACT DO WAS CHANGE A TINY THING IN THE LXFML FILE AND THEN WIGGLE A BIT. LIKE I'VE KNOWN THAT THE FOV ATTRIBUTE IN THE .LXFML FILE WAS THERE FOR YEARS, BUT I HAD IT WRITTEN OFF AS USELESS AND APPARENTLY RELATED TO THE SCREENSHOT PREVIEW IMAGE IN .LXF FILES. LIKE I HAD SPENT TWO YEARS HAVING TO FORCE LDD INTO A TINY NARROW WINDOW TO PREVENT MY EYEBALLS FROM EJECTING OUT OF THEIR SOCKETS. I need a break.
aidenpons and 6 others reacted to Jimbob for a blog entry
This has come as a bit of a surprise to me. I don't see you as "Mael: The Anime Hater or just Mael: The Unproductive Arsehole", to me you're another completely valid member of the RRU community. I don't believe that you don't fit in to RRU. You certainly don't need to have experience with Rock Raiders to "fit in" here, as we have equally popular modding research into other games going on. Even then, there is no prerequisite for you to be involved in classic games in any way to have a "right" to be here - the simple fact that you're here proves that you have something in common with some other member here, and that's all that is needed to form a community. Furthermore, don't waste your time comparing yourself to others. You are who you are, do not try and emulate or strive to become some other person. We already have that person in the world and don't need two of them. So what if people laugh more as a result of other people's jokes? That doesn't mean they value you any less. Don't judge yourself on the success of another person or you will never feel like you've achieved anything in life. One very useful thing I've learned is that there will always be someone better than you. Always. And that should not make you feel disheartened, rather feel encouraged to simply be the best you can be, that's all you can give and that's all the world asks for. I understand that you want to improve your "immaturity", not that I particularly see it, and I can offer some excellent advice on that. You're on the Internet. You have the incredible luxury of being able to review every comment you ever make before you make it. Before you click that post button, have a read through and think "does this sound rude/immature/etc?" Would you be offended if someone said it to you? You can even try reading it in a sarcastic or rude tone and seeing if it still sounds relatively okay. Another great piece of advice I have learned is to not be disheartened when I make mistakes. If you do make a poor comment or behave in a bad way, don't beat yourself up about it. Obviously you need to embrace the fact that you did something wrong and should deal with it, but do not feel depressed or in any way hate yourself for it. That only makes things worse and will not help you move on. If you still feel that you need a break then please go ahead, and I hope it does you good.7 points -
