I recall seeing that before, though I'm not sure where. Some stuff about the art style looks a bit different than that of the comic, particularly the yellow skin tone. I wonder if there's more inside...

On whether he or LEGO came up with the initial Time Busters/Cruisers concept, Hagen said "It came from Lego or the advertising agency created specifically for the comic. It was huge.

I simplified it somewhat for the comic."

Not sure if he's referring to the size of the model or the story there, but we now know the idea wasn't Hagen's. I'd be willing to bet the theme was in some stage of development, but it's still incredibly unusual for the media to debut before the sets, isn't it? Alpha Team is the only other example I can think of.

There's also LEGO Island and Racers, technically Creator too. In all of those cases, though, the media was developed as standalone, not based on working concepts for a theme.

So this is really bizarre. Now we get to wonder just what and how Hagen simplified, and whether it will be possible to dig up the source material.

EDIT: and that Time Twisters image is from a supplemental catalog to Klick. Dark_Turtle uploaded the World Club version of it, remember? It's possible it was drawn by Hagen since he would have been an artist on-hand, but it almost certainly has no significance beyond its promotional nature.

Also, slightly unrelated, but I remember Sadie once mentioning to me that Frank Madsen (artist of the Jim Spaceborn comics) drew this little catalog comic: I don't have a chat log, though, so I'm going from memory - take it with a grain of salt until Sadie can confirm.

"I made a few minor comic strips for the LEGO catalogues in the early 1990s as well. Around 1990-93. In the big range brochure.

In the old cataloques. Look at http://www.brickfactory.info/catalogi/index.html - choose "Netherlands full line" catalogues from 1994-96:"-Frank Madsen

Confirmed.

Edit: These are very interesting developments taking place here, I'm excited to see how this all pans out further into the future.

More from Kim Hagen:

"The Timebuster concept was developed by the the advertising agency based on a huge timebuster car build by either Lego or the Advertising agency. Lego would send me all boxes from a new published Lego universe for every episode. I then used that to come up with the stories....  When the timecruisers came out I created a story where the car was switched out with the timecruisers boat..."

Interesting...I have a pet theory now that this giant car model was for some touring show/store display promotion that we haven't heard of yet...

To expand on what I shared earlier:
"The original model was quite big with lots of stuff, but its difficault to pinpoint exactly what details where omitted...  Ive rarely drawn any of the models very precise. My focus have been that they  should  "feel" right even though they were simplified...."-Kim Hagen

Also, I asked Hagen if he had any pictures of the aforementioned TimeBuster car model, as well as if he had any more old Klick magazine issues, to which he said he has most of the old Klick issues, but he's not sure if he has any images of the original TimeBuster car model, though he'll look. Further, I asked if it would be possible for him to scan or photograph the contents or at the very least the comics from the 1994-1997 issues of Klick magazine in high enough quality for the text to be legible, to which he replied he has very limited time, but if ever he gets a break between projects he'd try.

That's quite nice of Hagen to offer to scan the issues if he gets time. I wouldn't particularly expect anything to come of it, but I appreciate that he has been so helpful.

So it sounds like what he means is that the time machine in the original comic is what he was originally given? That sounds reasonable, it looks fairly large for a LEGO vehicle of the time in the images (about 12 to 14 studs wide, it looks like). So here's what I'm thinking might have been the story at this point:

LEGO and Advance develop a new marketing idea for the 1994 season - time travel between the different LEGO themes. They internally develop ideas around this, creating a wacky DeLorean-esque time machine that integrates parts from the all of the major themes of the time. In addition, they create Max Timebuster, a sneaky, time-hopping villain to be stopped. As a part of all of this, they have Kim Hagen make a comic about the time travelers. He kind of moulds Max into a different character.

Meanwhile, LEGO likes how the comic turns out and decides that the entire concept is ripe with potential for a new theme. So they take the existing ideas - a time travelling kid and professor, time machines made of parts from multiple LEGO themes - and develop the Time Cruisers range. For indiscernible reasons, Max becomes Tim Time Cruiser (in line with the theme's name), and potentially the professor undergoes a namechange too. Hagen creates a comic that switches out the original car is switched for the Flying Time Vessel - I can only assume this is the two pages we've seen.

I dunno, flying by the seat of my pants here, no way to know for certain yet. But it is fun to theorize.

There's a lot of LEGO advertising stuff in this topic, but one on the second page especially caught my eye...

http://www.giocattolivecchi.com/public/_forum_pic/1139686/b5.JPG

What have we here, hmmmm...?

Also, it seems Max Timebuster appears throughout the ads in different outfits.

Aaaand here's a more readable version of a space ad in the topic which looks interesting (Commander Black Star?): '> (From here: http://docmanhattan.blogspot.com/2011/04/le-pubblicita-fuorvianti-di-topolino_15.html ) Some rough Google Translate stuff says it opens with "Follow the commander Black Star in new exciting adventures" and then lists what you can do with various Blacktron sets.

Mostly unrelated, but this is a neat site with Japanese LEGO catalogs and such: http://www.lego7205.com/catalog

There's also this Italian advertisement of some sort for Klick Junior TV: http://www.ebay.it/itm/Tia10-Pubblicita-Advertising-Werbung-1995-Lego-crea-lidea-Klick-Junior-TV-/270895392227

And this Kellogg's Cornflakes Adventurers/Town/Technic promotion apparently in association with World Club: http://www.ebay.it/itm/Kelloggs-corn-flakes-Lego-1998-magazine-advert-/310898288291?pt=UK_Collectables_Advertising_ET&hash=item4862fb66a3

EDIT:   btw: Are you aware of Captain Magenta (Space Police II), Commander Bear (Ice Planet 2002) and Major Kartofski (Spyrius)? (all UK names)

Missed this before. I've seen "Commander Bear" and "Major Kartofski" in various places, and directly tied to the minifigures, but I've only seen "Captain Magenta" here. Is the name ever used anywhere else, particularly along with a specific minifigure? There's really only one choice of a minifigure that would fit him (the higher ranking SP2 officer with the epaulettes) but it'd be good to see another source.

Old subject, but here's a solid source for Captain Magenta: '> Just noticed it tonight while looking at other stuff.

Also, does this guy have a name? http://www.lego7205.com/minifig-imperial/4

IIRC he's just called something generic (if anything), but he's in this Japanese catalog segment with other named characters: http://www.lego7205.com/pirates-cat/4 And automatic translation of his page there isn't really helping very much, I'm not sure how much it may or may not be screwing things up ("GAIL ADJUTANT"...?)

Happened on some 1996 to early-1997 issues of Klick: http://www.priceminister.com/s/lego+klick#xtatc=INT-601

One of the listings seems to be for a collection of issues (1-10 with 7 missing plus a special edition, whatever that may be), but still awaiting on a response from the seller to confirm whether or not they're still available: http://prntscr.com/5hr1sz

The site's FAQ states that both the buyer and seller must reside in Metropolitan France, meaning I'll need to either employ an intermediary service, or find someone residing in France willing to forward the magazines to me.

Those are ridiculously pricey. I'd pitch in, but at that cost it isn't really viable for me at the moment.

Comic arrived at my parents' today. I'll be back there on Sunday for the holidays, so scans will come soon. Until then, I got my mom to take a few pictures.

I translated most of the text on the pages you uploaded. From what I gather Professor Cyber and Tim travel back in time to help a Prince rectify whatever terrible thing it was happened to their secret special cookie recipe. Then it somehow transitions into Aquazone wherein the Prince, Professor Cyber, and Tim aid the Aquanauts to retrieve their energy crystals as they're apparently called here from the AquaSharks.

Good news: the collection of old Klick issues is still available and I already have someone in France willing to forward them to me. I'm arranging their purchase now.

Edit: The order's been placed, but we're not quite out of the woods yet. Let's just hope it first arrives locally in France, then manages to safely make its way internationally to the states.

So my parents trashed the scanner I had been using previously when I left for college. I went out to Office Max today to see about getting the comic scanned, but

gallery_3221_470_5381.png I'm sorry, but we can't scan 20-year-old mail order toy and cookie comics that have absolutely no bearing on their creators at this point in time because copyright law.

On to plan B then, but it'll be at least another day to wait. My apologies!

It's ok, in the meantime we can reverse engineer and modify kids games from 15 years ago.
