Computers. And my thoughts of the day.

So thats the last project for awhile that needs turned in. Next one is due in nearly a month, but considering how fast that time spirals down, I should probably get working on it soon.

For some reason, the guys at L3 Titan are somewhat jealous. You can't connect anything that they don't maintain to the schools network, you would assume its for virus protection, but no. Its easy enough to break through the "protection" they've set down. Heck, all it would take is someone running an EXE off a flash drive.

I think its more of "protect the computers from the students", because you also can't get to the C:\ Drive through My Computer. The Control Panel is also locked down, and under normal circumstances you can't right-click.

Except every one of those is fairly easily circumvented. C:\ drive can be accessed with a shortcut to it, right click can be achieved with the use of the -600 number. I.E: School-600-01-01, and the password.

Control panel I had to wait until I got my hands on the "Unlock" file they use for maintenance. Some careless L3 guy left it in the recycle bin, I restored it and put it on my flashdrive.

On an unrelated note, I'm getting a FDD today. Hopefully my MicroStation copy will run on Linux. Its supposed to.

Tell me how to sneek some RAM into the computers at school, then I'll be happy. They have only 250mbs of it.

you need to figure out what kind of ram they got.

The tools you use for that need admin rights and/or are system tools.

But have a try at this:

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

When you know what type of ram it is, you can find the appropiate RAM chips.

Then, IF there is an open slot in those pcs, you can put it in there, and hope nobody notices :P

You use the stock system they have installed? Pfft. Install a bootable OS image of a free OS (like Ubuntu) onto a flash drive (at least a 4 GB one) and boot into that from the BIOS on every computer you have to use. It will revert to its normal boot after you remove the flash drive. Shouldn't take more than a min to boot up that way. :P There. Now nobody will know you have your own OS, and full access to the HD (it's quite easy to pull off if you know how)

One problem: The BIOS is almost always passworded in schools. Though considering the carelessness at acmex's school, who knows :P

Unless USB boot is already configured, which is unlikely.

hehe...even if it is, there are ways...WHICH I have been banned from talking about... >_>

BIOS is passworded, I discovered that when I modded tried to mod with a HDD-swap thing. You know, those things that the military uses to pull Hard Drives out of computers without having to take them apart.

About Ram: We have 256 meg. And its DDR2, amazingly enough. And the only spare RAM I can get? The ones from the old military comps. Which is DDR.

And I DO have a Ubuntu disk there. I just don't use it, even as the aide I would be yelled at. But I've booted from a MS-DOS Floppy before :P

I either use a seldom used computer in an auxiliary room, so that's not too bogged down yet. Or the server comp, which has some neat stuff on it, like Mimio Interactive Whiteboard :D

Only thing is, the Teacher has to unlock the server for me, and I don't pester her. I USED to have her password, but then the district made them change all their passwords every 45 days >:(

Ah, school computers. First off, the right click thing is apparently a network policy. Second, lol lazy person. Third, do you have some sort of network drive assigned to you? We have H:\ drives at my school. They used to be only 300MB, but then they got boosted to 230 some odd GB. We aren't supposed to have .EXEs either. But, then of course you could just put them in a zip file and change the extension. Also, cmd is blocked, but you can get the portable one from portableapps and use it there. That works. I think we would get expelled if someone caught you with Linux running though. I believe the BIOS isn't passworded here, I think I checked once.

Our school.

Any .exe running means crapload of trouble. No exceptions.

As I stated previously, I get a bit more leinance, as the teacher knows that I won't do damage deliberately, and that any actual damage is probably not caused by me.

The only way I could really get in trouble would be to A) Permanently damage the comps, B) Connect an "unauthorized" device

She gets really, really ticked when people mess around with the computers, though. I.E: Messing with the Icons (I hate the idiots who make stickmen with all the shortcuts >:U), changing the background to random "stars"

CMD is blocked, but here we can get around it with nothing more than a batch script. Or so a friend says.

Oh lol batch files. Yes, those may work, but it depends on how cmd is blocked. If it is blocked at a user/permissions level, it may not work. If it's just the exe that's blocked, then then .BAT files might work. Also, if you have a teacher that couldent use a computer to save their life, that's usually a good one to "borrow" their login from. Like my German teacher for example. I believe his password is about 7 letters long, all letters I think, uses the hunt and peck typing style, and does such slow enough to see what he is typing. Next time I have to find the lame_enc.dll (mp3 encoder for audacity for PALS), I'm going to watch very carefully.

Anyways, my web teacher is also flash drive paranoid. She gets all flustered when she sees someone with one, or playing games. That reminds me, I need to move project64 over to my H drive at school.

Yeah.
