Lightwave/3ds max - Modify the first model

Note: Well I decided that I will write on this blog when I got something I want to share with you;).

Today I started modifying the main model of LRR. You know it the LRR Pilot Model. Well as I said I will give you a tutorial based uppon the things I did and what I discovered.

Modifying the LPhead.lwo

You can find the head (I choosed this model because it´s very easy to add details to this and it fitted well in our Pipeline) in the extract Directory of your WAD file LRR0.WAD in the Minifigures directory.

Open Up the LPhead.lwo in the Lightwave Modeler (as I said it is usefull to download the demo! ;) )

You see this is really a rough model of a Legofigur head.

So now we decided to make this model a littlebit smoother. What I discovered is that the Lightwave modeler can export in FBX but can´t import.

So what can we do to avoid this issue.

Simple answer. We open up the Lightwave Layout Editor and open up the VPL_Minifig.lws here we see the complete Minfigur (our Pilot)

select the Headpart and go to the Filetab Export FBX. Import it in 3ds max.

From now on I would like to give you pictures but I don´t have the right software (I could record the way I do it as a videotutorial, if you want me to then feel free to leave a comment) so I can just say what we have to do.

1.Right Click (Quadmenu opens) convert to -> Editable Poly.

2.Use the Tesselate Tool to give the model more details (to smooth it) and adjust the edges were you need to.)

3. Export the Headmodel as an FBX file (default options).

4. Open Up Lightwave Layout.

5. File -> Open Object -> Select your modifed FBX file -> Import Dialog: OK

6. Save your Head Model as the original LWO model. File -> Save Courrent Object -> Browse to your Minifigur Directory -> Overwrite the LPHead.lwo

Finished

You have completed a serious step in modding LRR.

PS: A courious thing I discovered was that by the export import my modifed Headmodel was rotated on the x axis around 90°. If this is the case go to the modify tab -> Rotate . You may need to adjust the Pivot point (Rotate Pivot) because the LWS file will use the Pivot as the oriantation. In my case the head was always rotated in every LWS (till I rotated the Pivot Point^^).

So as you see we just modifed one object but the LWS files are all using this modified Head model perfectly (including animation via Pivot Point^^).

I attached the modified head model so you can modify it in the way you want or try to import it the way I discribed it here.

PS: Could you may add rar and bmp extension to this board. I am not allowed to use them but I prefer them;)
