And of those categories, who do you consider to be kings? I've been considering making an RC Computer for a while, so I am hoping for a study yet fast design which will be able to absorb any sudden impacts (not too large, but still an impact)...

Of all the categories, I personally believe the "Top Stars" brands are the kings due to their top-of-the-line vehicles and equipment.

For your purposes, you're looking at a class of vehicle, not a brand. Fast and can take hits... a 1/8th scale buggy is your best bet (I've seen them jump houses and keep going). Steer clear of 1/10 scale stadium trucks - they're actually faster, but less durable - and anything in the Cheap Toys or Deadpool categories.

Thanks for the advice, it's very much appreciated.

And yeah, I'm new to the whole "building an RC" concept, so excuse me if I do get some stuff wrong at first...

I have a HPI E10... heavily modded though.

That's a good car. It's an entry level Sprint 2 from what I've seen, so it should be compatible with hop-up parts for the higher end car as well as standardized components.
