I found out that LDD has a memory leak.

I have figured out the cause of many crashes: There is a memory leak tied with the hinge tool. I discovered this when making scaled up version of a model.

Do you have any more details on the leak? How much does it leak over a certain period of time? How can the hinge tool trigger the leak? Must the hinge tool be active the whole time for the leak, or only activate it once and it happens?

If you find out about a leak, try to find out as much about it as possible. I use LDD a lot, and a memory leak is a big concern for me, especially when I'm on this faily Vista laptop.

I was wondering why it used so much memory.

The RAM leak can be tamed by installing an absurd amount of RAM (sorry XP fans, you're stuck with a 4GB limit...). When i had 8Gb LDD would lag even in Safe Mode. But now, with 16GB, it works fine.

Well, because now you have enough space to contain the leak. It's not quite a fix as it is a bypass.

I was thinking the same thing. It doesn't fix the memory leak, it just limits it for a while longer. Sadly for me, this laptop is capped at 2GB RAM, and I'm using both slots. And this is the laptop I use LDD on the most. :(

The leak appears to be tied to the Hinge tool's "hinge maps" not being cleared when the tool is switched. The leak is "reset" by restarting LDD.

It seems that every time a hinge is selected, LDD takes inventory of all of the obstructions and pivots in the model. This inventory is what allows complex movement between hinged parts, but is not deleted when a new one is made.
