An Idea For a Game
Ben24x7 and 6 others reacted to McJobless for a blog entry
A very common rookie-issue, when making games, is to believe that the story is the most crucial part of the design process, or that people care for the story above anything else. You're planning out for a video game, not a book. It's nice that you have an idea of theme and characters, but the point of making a game is to make some fun gameplay. This should be your entire focus.7 points -

Lair and 3 others reacted to Cyrem for a blog entry
My personal preference would be to keep it as true to the original game as possible whilst making sure everything is modifiable as possible. That way if people do want a new UI, (among other things) it's just a matter of making some changes to the remake.4 points -

I'm with Cyrem on this one. Give it the original UI and leave a new UI to mods. Better idea: make your revised UI a mod. You'll be more inclined to make your hooks and whatever more usable because you'll end up making it with the same tools everyone else has access to. You can even bundle the GUI mod with the base download if you wanted.3 points -

I completely agree with you on one hand. On the other, Shadowblaze as a name has zero identity. It's so cheesy and common that it won't do to identify anybody. It's just one step above XxXCav3Lurk3rXxX, which is not what I would like. Now, Nuwe does sound a bit pretentious but I don't care that much about it. In no time you'll become normalized to it like with my older name, and won't treat it as foreign as much as you are now.2 points -

Lego Rock Raiders Reloaded will be possible
le717 and one other reacted to Ben24x7 for a blog entry
If you do use GitHub, you may need to invest time into making sure Git works properly with Unity. I've seen one or two people who had trouble linking GitHub to Unity and spent quite a bit of time getting them to work hand-in-hand. I'm not sure if this is a genuine issue for all game-makers who use Unity, but once you decide to get 'em together prepare for unforeseen consequences.2 points -

Cap't Rex and one other reacted to Cirevam for a blog entry
It actually has no upgrades implemented in the final game, so maybe it was planned but they realized it couldn't be done, or it was pointless and they forgot to update the manual. A bigger cargo hold means nothing when it can only hold as much ore as the pilot can carry. It would be different if we could trawl for ore and crystals at the bottom of lakes. Nah, no drills, you need LASERS:2 points -
The mistakes of "Art Battle" and "RRU Tower"
Ben24x7 reacted to Arthuriel for a blog entry
I wonder, if it is possible to combine a random word or title generator with the art battle (with the overall goal to combine it with RRU as a theme for example). That way you would not have a plot and you could do it several ways: Option 1: -use random word generator for your own post Option 2: -draw something based on the previous random word generator suggestion. After that use a random word generator and nominate someone else for a drawing. Addition: If the user doesn't reply in one or two weeks (just an example) you have to nominate someone else Those are two ideas, that I just had. Maybe we have to decide on a random word generator. We could also combine it with a translator to translate it a million times to get even crazier results.1 point -

LDD to OBJ model collaboration project
Lind Whisperer reacted to lol username for a blog entry
LEGO doesn't seem to care about people using assets from old video games and such. But they do care about LDD's brick models/geometry. It's of much higher importance to them. For example, see the LDD to POV-Ray Converter: http://ldd2povray.lddtools.com/ http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/71654-software-ldd2povray/&do=findComment&comment=1333651 LEGO isn't likely to care about, say, a Rock Raiders remake using assets from the original game. They are likely to care about LDD brick geometry/models being made publicly available, especially in such mass quantity. I'd recommend contacting them first, or you might just end up with them contacting you and telling you to stop after you've already put a lot of work into it.1 point -

I don't think a name is of super high value importance, as long as the content is good, people will get to know the name behind the creation(s) regardless of how simple or complex it is. Just go with something that you feel is you and something you don't mind all too much being called.1 point -

Rock Raiders: Reloaded progress report 1
Lind Whisperer reacted to sheepandshepherd for a blog entry
Ah, the ol' Westwood-style RTS. Tiberian Sun was my favorite! And the Rock Raiders should be glad their Energy Crystals aren't Tiberium crystals I like moddable GUIs. Unfortunately, GUIs are one of the least moddable parts of most games. Probably because they mix data (usually moddable) with code (usually not moddable, unless there's scripts), and it takes some effort to get that separated out. Idk if modern Unity has this too, but some engines like Godot allow loading GUIs from data files containing the Button/Image/TextBox/whatever objects with their positions, sizes, event function names, and other variables. That's just a lot more work than implementing the GUI inside the engine. Maybe not worth it for a simple game?1 point -

sheepandshepherd reacted to DarkianMaker for a blog entry
I could add an option to have two GUI's, the one from the original LRR and the Reloaded version so people can choose between which layout they want. Command & Conquer series (Generals was an exception to that rule), Emperor: Battle for Dune, 8Bit Armies among others that have top right minimaps, although I do play other games that have the minimap on a different locations but those have a different GUI than I am working on currently.1 point -
