le717
I need help fixing a graphics problem. Items that are supposed to be transparent are not which makes the graphics a little annoying. In addition the powerup images are broken. Googling led to an official lego problem solving page but the solutions presented did not help. I can get a screen if needed, I'd really like to have a clean game. Thanks! Just for reference here is a link to a copy of the manual: http://www.portal24h...ers-t15809.html Yes, please link a screenshot of the problem, as well as a DxDiag dump (in a spoiler!), so we may help you a little bit better. I'm pretty sure your game is running in software mode, which will cause those black boxes. Runing it in Hardware mode fixes that. But a screenshot would be nice so I can be sure that's your problem. Also, please take a picture of your games files, making sure LEGORacers.exe the dll file, LEGO.JAM are in the picture. That will help us too, as there are two version of LEGO Racers, namely, the 1999 release and the 2001 rerelease.
GoobyPls
What is dxdiag and what is a spoiler?
McJobless
Aye, we have le newbie. As a ProTip, when you are uploading multiple screenshots, don't paste them into the same picture in paint. Upload them as separate images, as it's easier and doesn't waste as much screen space. Alright, GoobyPls (BEST NAME EVER), to do the dxdiag dump in spoilers, I need you to do the following steps: Press the Start Button. In WinXP, click the "Run" button. In Windows Vista/7, type in "Run" (without quotes) and press enter. Type in "dxdiag" (without quotes) and press enter. If a message pops up saying something about WHQL digital signatures, say "no". Press the "Save All Information..." button, and save it as a .txt file on your desktop (you can choose the name). Open the .txt file you just saved in Notepad (double clicking it should work fine), and press and hold down the Ctrl and A keys. Then, press and hold the Ctrl and C keys. Close the .txt document, and click inside the Quick Reply box at the bottom of this page. Type in the follow code: Now, right-click and press Paste. Type in the following code: Press the "Post" button. That should be easy to follow. Welcome to RRU. P.S.: To answer the questions, DxDiag is a troubleshooting tool to figure out what system hardware you have and DirectX drivers you have. It stands for DirectX Diagnostics. A spoiler is a little bit of code, like in le717's signature, that hides text. They were originally used for the purposes of hiding parts of a story that somebody hasn't read yet, but now can be used to make posts shorter, hide jokes or just keep non-important information out of the way of the main post. You create a spoiler by writing the following code: TYPE YOUR TEXT HERE It creates the following: TYPE YOUR TEXT HERE

le717
Name: Ricoh PCIe -Picture Card Controller 3&11583659&1& That's better than "Drive " Ok, to answer your problem. Intel Core i3 CPU, Intel integrated graphics, Win7 x64... You're on a laptop, no doubt. You have a 2001 re-release, which I have, and it runs just fine on Intel GPU. What you are having is something that commonly experienced when running the 1999 version. You see, the game has some sort of transparency in the sprites, and those black boxes are popping up because your GPU doesn't know how to translate the transparency. The way to fix this is by adding the -select3d parameter to a shortcut. Quote the game's readme: Blocky Graphics - some cards may not be recognised by LEGO Racers and the game may attempt to emulate the accelerated version. To force the game to recognise your video card, an extra command can be added which will call up a video card selection menu. Create a shortcut from the LEGO Racers.exe file and add the command -select3d to the end. To create a shortcut, right click on the LEGO Racers.exe file and select Create Shortcut. Right click on the Shortcut you have just created and select Properties. In the text box titled Target add the -select3d command as shown in the following example. "C:Program FilesLEGO MediaGamesLEGO RacersLEGORacers.exe" -select3d Click on Apply and then exit the Properties window. Double Click on the LEGO Racers shortcut and after the videos have been displayed, the video card selection menu will appear. Select the card you wish to use and set it to run in Microsoft D3D Hardware acceleration. That should fix your problem. But if you cannot select Hardware acceleration, LR is already running in that mode, and you can use that switch to force it in software mode. Of course, you could get an updated driver fro your GPU from Dell's site, and that may fix the whole thing as well. So, to recap: 1: Your computer is not fully rendering all the images of LR (although it should. A Dell laptop with a Core2Duo and integrated GPU does it just fine...). 2: Add the -select3d parameter to a shortcut, and if it helps any. 3: If it doesn't, get a GPU driver update from Dell's site, and run it without the -select3d parameter. 4: If that doesn't work, add back the parameter and try it again. If you do all that, and it still doesn't work, you've got some other problem. ;)
GoobyPls
First off, apologies for the pic. I don't know how to make the image not take the white parts of the screen Like I said before, I followed the read me and it did not help. If you see my two options on the selection screen, one is emulation while the other isn't. I physically cannot select the non-emulation option, no matter which I click on it always chooses emulation. I followed the link to your post and changed it to -direct3d but then the game wouldn't run at all As for updating drivers, how do I know which one is for the GPU? How did you tell that I have a 2001 copy? Would I not have this problem with a 1999 copy?
le717
<br />First off, apologies for the pic. I don't know how to make the image not take the white parts of the screen<br /> When you paste the picture into whatever photo editor you use, just crop the white space out, leaving only the image. Like I said before, I followed the read me and it did not help. If you see my two options on the selection screen, one is emulation while the other isn't. I physically cannot select the non-emulation option, no matter which I click on it always chooses emulation. You cannot select the second option because your game is already running in hardware mode. Thus, it is doing it's job by letting us run it in software mode. I followed the link to your post and changed it to -direct3d but then the game wouldn't run at all JrMasterModelBuilder just made a typo there. It's -select3d, and you already added that parameter (your first picture). As for updating drivers, how do I know which one is for the GPU? Forget it. I just checked. There's been no updates since your laptop was made. How did you tell that I have a 2001 copy? Would I not have this problem with a 1999 copy? LEGORacers.exe and GolDP.dll are dated 2001. That, and the fact you're missing a file named LEGORacers.icd lets me know that you have a 2001 rerelease. You most likely would have this problem with a 1999 version. The 2001 version was updated to work on Windows XP and up, and running a 1999 version can be a little hard at times, mainly because it may not even run on your PC. Plus, it's really hard to find a 1999 copy, as they have only one design, and they had a short printing before the 2001 version came out. I do not know what is going on here. Do you know someone in real life you can ask about this? They would be able to help you a lot more than I could.
Lair
Er, just crop the image with MSPaint. It seems you typo'd the -select3D. Also... Gooby Pls. Really?
Mr. Eight-Three-One
Actually, I remember it looking like this on my old computers that had no 3D accelerator (it ran about as well as you'd expect). It seems like it's just not finding any acceleration for some reason.

I read that topic linked and there was mention of extracting directx.dll files from earlier years, can this possibly fix anything?
Phoenyx
I read that topic linked and there was mention of extracting directx.dll files from earlier years, can this possibly fix anything? Definitely. Heck, adding D3DRM.dll alone to the game's directory is a mandatory fix for Rock Raiders, and I would assume that it's required for most games that use older versions of DirectX. GoobyPls
This sound promising, thanks. How do I go about extracting such files, where is the directory I place them in, and where can I get these files to begin with?
JrMasterModelBuilder
This sound promising, thanks. How do I go about extracting such files, where is the directory I place them in, and where can I get these files to begin with? You would find it somewhere in the C:Windows folder on a computer with an older DirectX. Probably inside the system32 folder. Just place that DLL in the same folder with the LEGORacers.exe and it will find it.

I looked around but could not find whatever extractor program Cyrem recommends (this is based off the linked thread) so how do I get the .dll files? le717
Never download DLL files from the web. DLL files are dangerous and can mess up yoour entire computer. That being said, the DX6 DLL files are on the Racers disc, and they are already uncompressed. The DLL files may be able to help, but, GooblyPls can't even crop a picture (no offence. Everybody starts somewhere ), so should we be recommending DLL files to him? GooblyPls, if you do get the DLL files from the disc, do as JMMB said and out them in the same directory as LEGORacers.exe. If they are needed, then your game will run perfectly. ;)

le717
Alternatively, put it in the System32 folder and it'll work for all programs that use it. That's what he shoudn't do. If he puts them in there, he could overwrite the new DLL files, and could mess up his computer completely. Then, he could blame it on us because we told him to put the files there. Unless you know you're doing, if a game needs a DLL file, it should go in the same directory as the game's exe. ;)

GoobyPls
This sounds rather risky just to improve graphics. I will look into finding the .dll files in the disc. In the meantime, did you know you can push back racers over the starting line and they will freeze? Another uncropped pic follows:

GoobyPls
Can you not be bothered to crop them? I actually figured it out after this one and I made a comic that was properly cropped but it was removed by an admin I'll put it in my sig.

This is a good time as ever to tell you this: If you hit Print Screen while LEGO Racers is loaded, a screenshot will be saved in the same directory as the EXE. All you have to do is load it in Paint, save it as a PNG, and upload it somewhere. No cropping required! BTW, that's the same folder you would put the dll files from the disc in. ;)
GoobyPls
Thanks. As for the .DLL files, I can't find them on the disc or even online for that matter. All I see are many .TUN files and the saves and whatever other game files used for the actual program. I don't think I will be pursuing the issue further as it is not a debilitating problem and I have exhausted pretty much all possible fixes. I thank you all for the help though. Actually, you didn't look hard enough for them. Stick in your disc, view it's contents, then browse to "RedistDirectX6directx". Copy all the DLL files from there and paste them in the same folder as LEGORacers.exe (the default location is C:Program Files (x86)LEGO MediaGamesLEGO Racers. If you moved it, then it's wherever you moved it). When that is done, load LEGO Racers and take a screenshot (using the method in my last post), and compare it to your other screenshots. If all goes well, your game wil run perfectly, and you can take that screenshot and upload it somewhere for all to see! :D
