So I recently got about 12 old LEGO Mania magazines off of eBay (Full scans coming when I find the scanner). There is a lot of interesting stuff there, but there were also some beta screenshots of various games here and there in some of them! They are quite small, but you can read the text in most and it is very interesting...

November - December 2001 Issue

There are 3 beta screenshots of LEGO Racers 2 on page 16.

Screenshot 1: Shows the car builder. Sparky has been replaced by Professor Voltage (Without glasses) and the 20-Piece limit seems to be gone. Screenshot 2: A race on Mars. Looks normal until you notice Reigel's mech is red instead of blue. Screenshot 3: A race on Xalax. The player is driving a Rama's car, which is not normally possible unless you use Cheat Engine.

January - Febuary 2000 Issue

Page 4 has a total 4 LEGO Racers 1 screenshots for N64. They all look normal, but the character builder has an ever-so-slightly different background. Not much of a difference though.

September - October 1999 Issue

Pages 6-7 show several Rock Raiders beta screenshots (Different GUI, Jet skin, ect) and 1 screenshot of LEGOLAND which has a building I don't remember seeing before.

March - April 2001 Issue

The last page has a LEGO Island 2 ad, which mentions some strange things... "Challenge the Brickster in Dino-Park, Castle Island, and outer space!" It also mentions a Rock Monster cave - an area only seen in the GBC version of LI2. Was there an underground area in the PC version of LI2 at one point...? Part of the ad was cut off due to a coupon on the other side so I can't see it all. However, the stuff we do have is quite interesting. Also, the screenshot of the Bi-Plane minigame shows a different GUI.

March - April 1997 Issue

Page 15 has a "Coming Soon" ad for LEGO Island 1, and shows an early screenshot of the jet-ski race. The race seems to use a checkpoint system, there is a helicopter flying overhead, and the buildings are still on the island (In the final version they are taken off to make the game easier to run on old computers). And Nick is sing his motorcycle to chase the Brickster around the beach (Or something, it is hard to tell).

July - August 1999 Issue

Page 6 has 4 beta screenshots of LEGO Racers 1 and 1 beta screenshot of Rock Raiders. The first 3 LR1 screens look normal, but on the last one, you can see that the Test Track is different. You know when you start the Test Track there is a big multi-colored block in front of you? In the beta, that was replaced by 2 jumps in the same space. The jumps are red, but on the part where the car drives there are 2 Octan logos. As for the RR screen, it's just a rock monster picking up a random RR - the only difference is the GUI.

November - December 1999 Issue

Page 22 has some Rock Raiders screens with the old GUI. The next page also shows some LEGOLAND screens with 2 buildings I don't remember seeing - a jungle temple and the US capital.

I will get scans of the LEGO Magazine screens when I find my scanner (We're moving and it might be packed up somewhere).

Also, some video of the LEGO Racers 2 beta version is shown in a trailer for the game. I have the trailer on an old promo disk I got with LI2, but somebody else already put it on YouTube so I'll just post that and save myself some time.

Notice the "Gold Brick" icon at the beginning of the gameplay is different, and the checkpoints are different.

Also, you may remember that the Playstation version of Stunt Rally was canceled. However, the same disk that contained the LR2 beta gameplay also contained the only known screenshots of that version. The disk won't work on my new computer, but you can download the disk and try it out yourself here: http://tronec.org/bmp/files/LEGO/cds/LEGOdemo.iso (It's a free promo and therefore legal to copy ;) )

A while back I found a whole lot of LR1 beta screens on some website, but can't find the link. I think I know how to find it again though, and will update this topic when I find it.

This isn't relivent to your stuff, but I've seen beta shots of LEGO Loco, where they had a bridge for people to go over tracks and roads, as well as other buildings (though this is simple spriting).

I found a text document with all the websites that had LR1 beta shots! Here are the links:

I have more somewhere...

EDIT:

I emailed High Voltage Software about the LR1 screens - they responded to my email about the Knightmare-Athon shortcut, so maybe they will reply to this as well. Let's hope so!

Wow. I didn't know there were all these images out there. That bike is weird. So the powerups were originally crystals, huh?:

Yup, there were gems instead of crystals and the icons were different. I found a lot of stuff in the Official LEGO Racers Topic on BZP that other people had posted, and then started doing google searches and looking in magazines, catalogs, ect. I would put all this in that BZP topic, but I was the last person to post there and can't double post... (COUGHmaybesomebodyelsecouldpostthereCOUGH).
