My First Vehicle

This was such a triumph, that I will make a note here to you guys because it's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

I have decided that I would start making vehicles. I thought I would start with a nice simple speeder, easy. I modeled it and made all the animations. I fitted all the main nulls and added all the values to the CFG that were needed. Finally, I added my creation to the game. At first I didn't see anything, but then when A raider drove it into view (It oddly keeps going underneath the cavern floor) I laughed with pure happiness. Here is a video showing my test:

This is the start of a new era of my rock raiders modding!

Very odd...whenever it moves, the lava steam stuff is visible, but when it isn't moving, the lava steam stuff isn't there. Odd...

Rebuilt the LWS and added 4 tyre nulls and repositioned the camera nulls. Now it stays above ground, except it is on its side and occasionally start flipping like crazy until eventually jamming itself into the cavern floor and crashing the game. At least now the first person view works.

Second test:

Third test:

The skid took three solid days (with overlap) to get it as-is, without damage or teleport animations. One for R&D, one for modeling, and one for animating, including the Pilot's no-float animation. The Black Lightwave only took one day because Hydrogen is a quick learner and he didn't have to stare at pictures of Bobcats for hours while modeling something.

Lightwave and milkshake

I'll release it once I finish the final details. The transparent cockpit is working perfectly. I'm thinking of putting the actual camera null into it, along with a HUD.

Talk about fail...

Stupid game makes the camera null fall back, causing the camera to slip out of the vehicle and into shoulder view.

That's why you move the cam nulls ahead in the route animation, unless the vehicle is really slow. Honestly, I wish DDI left an argument to disable camera lagging action.

It makes sense on some vehicles but on something that moves at a speed of 5 (what is the speed scale for the game based on?) make no sense.

I believe the speed is in squares per second, so a speed of 5.0 is five squares per second which is really fast. I don't know how far the camera lag is but I'm estimating it at half the distance of the squares per second, so you might want to try moving the cam null at least two squares ahead in the route animation.
