The2Banned2One
jamesster in the Chat: If you buy a game, lose the disk, and then download it, is it still pirating? Discuss it now. I don't think it's pirating. I think it's legal and if it isn't it should be. It's like emulating; it's illegal to emulate a game you've never owned before. lol username
Yeah. If you go out to a store and buy a game, are you buying the content, or the disk? I say you're paying for the content - look at games that can be run without disks, like LRR or LEGO Loco. Is it illegal to not use the disks? Of course not. In my mind, if you've paid for the game, you should also be able to download it as you've already paid for it and it's yours. Just my opinion though - I don't plan on downloading a thing until I know for sure. And even if it was ok, I'm not entirely sure I would download the game as I'm not really into it - the main reason I want to play it again is for nostalgia (For those who are dying to know, I lost it in a backpack at an airport along with some other stuff). Anonymouse
It's not pirating because there's no such thing. I, too, believe that you're buying the content. Legally however, it's still piracy (LRN2ENGLISH GUYS).
Cyrem
If you buy a game, lose the disk, and then download it, is it still pirating? Think of it this way... "Oh My Goodness! I broke my tea cup! Luckily... since I already paid for a tea cup, I'm allowed to go to the shop and walk straight out with a new one without paying." Clearly if you ruin you disc it is illegal to download a copy to replace it. When you buy a game you purchase 1 single copy of it, so downloading more copies is illegal as you haven't paid for them. When you pay for a game, you are not buying the content on the disc you are simply buying a single license to play that game. Even backing up discs is slowing becoming illegal... Well actually, in most cases it is since in order to do that you need to circumvent the copy protection and doing that is illegal.
Aki Dazrold
I think a lot of disc liscenses still have a clause that says you are allowed to make a single copy for backup purposes only.
Cyrem
I think a lot of disc liscenses still have a clause that says you are allowed to make a single copy for backup purposes only. So long as it doesn't mean circumventing copy protection systems which in most cases today, you have to do. Most also need new cracked executables to be able to play backups, but having one of those is illegal also.

TheEPICtrainrider
I like to look at it this way. I have a tea cup! But it's my only teacup! What would happen if i break it? I know! I'll make a direct copy with my magic cloning machine! Huzzzah! In other words, back up those game files. Then pirate it.
lol username
I've decided not to download the game, even though I payed for it. 2 reasons: 1 - Even though I payed, it is considered illegal, and I'm not gonna do it if it means breaking a law somewhere. 2 - Nobody has put it online, so I couldn't even if I wanted to. :P
Cirevam
1) Canada doesn't care as much about downloading games (so I heard) because it's just intellectual property and downloading it is somewhat like borrowing a book from the library, but there are infinite books. 2) What do you mean no one has put it online? You don't look very hard, do you?

Also, the purpose of a library is that you pay to look at a book and then give it back. If they had infinite books, then they might as well sell the books. This is now a book store. Similar to a video game store. Hey, look, we made it back to the real world.

If you download from the most "known" torrent sites (the ones with pirated stuff, PirateBay, MiniNova etc.) you can get sued. I live in Sweden so I know... Yea you can get sued, I didn't say that you wouldn't (You can do whatever you want in any country, though it will have consequences)... I mean look at the guys a TPB... they've been sued/threatened a bazillion times. Yet they are still there...

When you buy a physical item, you are also buying the matter that composes it. If you went to the shop, you can't carry out the new teacup because you only payed for the matter in the first teacup, not the second. With software...It's different. A good question: What are you actually buying when you buy software?
