TheDoctor
So, a little while ago I was looking thorough the software center on ubuntu, and saw Wings3D. I remembered seeing it mentioned on RRU and decided to give it a try. I messed around with it and decided that I liked it. I also took 20 minutes showing it to Cirevam. We both like it and it can export at a newer version of lwo and convert it with milkshape. I'm wondering if we could officially add this to our modding tool arsenal. Its free, open source, is available for Windows, Linux, Mac, and the source is available for compiling, and less than 10MB installed. It takes a little getting used to, but it could be quite useful, namely poly reduction. http://www.wings3d.com/ Spoiler Yes, no, opinions, you like/dislike wings, etc.... Amauros
And this would also mean that anyone on the forums can make a custom mesh for you guys to complete for use in LRR. ;)
Lair
This thing is free and non-expiring, right?
Amauros
This thing is free and non-expiring, right? That's the definition of open-source.
Lair
I didn't see where it said that. Ok then.
Amauros
Actually Doc said that, but if you go to the download page, you can download the source code of each version as well as the executable.
TheDoctor
Multipurpose bump. 1. Bump. 2. Wings3D is REALLY easy to use. Even I'm making sub-Cirevam level stuff on my first go. Its really nice. I might redo Cirevam's cabin model. I really, really like it. Super easy, a bunch of tools, hard to screw up, nice. I highly suggest this be out main modeling tool, and using Milkshape for file conversions and other little things.
PWNZOR
And the 3 or 4 users who have LightWave can export to LW5 and add textures to them need be.
Cirevam
"Cirevam level" in this case is making things simple and blocky on purpose because it's for a Lego game. But if you're having a good time with it then there are no objections.
Lair
Alright, How do you even add a shape?
PWNZOR
you right-click and select the shape you want to add.... I find LightWave 9.0 much easier to use that this. Not to mention LW9 has a more professional atmosphere and display.

Not to mention LW9 has a more professional atmosphere and display. Right click... oh my... *boom* Exactly. Superlarge menu. And the mouse controls are hard to use; I am used the right click lasso-selecting on the view; not bringing up a menu. I like having to press shift-click to select more objects. I just don't like Wings. Not saying it's bad, but I prefer Blender, MilkShape, and LightWave more than Wings.
Lair
Alright, I made something. I can't tell what, but it's something. ...phoo
Cirevam
PWNZOR, you're complaining about a free program. If it was good enough to garner income, they would be selling it instead of leaving it open-source. If it were being sold, it would have a more professional look. Besides, I have many complaints about Lightwave and that's a few hundred dollars. If I delete an object I can't undo the action, and I can only undo once for anything else. In Milkshape I can undo and redo around 100 actions, even deletions. Milk was thirty dollars when I bought it. For animations it stinks but at least it gives me a lot of freedom if I mess up a model. Wings at least highlights the faces so you can see what you're doing. In that aspect it curbstomps Milk and Light since I always end up missing some faces I thought I had selected. PWNZOR
Ah, yes, true. I had forgotten that it was free, and that LightWave is quite expensive. My apologies. Anyhow, Blender seems to be a bit better than Wings, I can see why people like Wings, but personally, I like Blender better.
Lair
I can't do ANYTHING with blender. At least I can make a tire with Wings.
PWNZOR
Why can't you make anything with Blender? What is the first thing you try to do that you can't?
Lair
Get the image of the fat rabbit on their home page out of my mind. After that, I pretty much get lost in the maze of controls that don't work.
PWNZOR
*Just now notices that rabbit* Well, I know Blender somewhat. But whatever works for ya.
TheDoctor
Lol the rabbit. There's a short animation about him. Looks very nice, made with blender I assume. Blender's UI is terrible with a capital S. I probably could figure out blender if I wanted to, but I'm liking Wings quite a lot right now. If you want, I can give you a list and discriptions of what things do in your "giant popup". It's really not that hard. Move, rotate, and scale are the ones you use most. Others once every now and then. It also halls if you have the mind for this. Seeing what you want and how to do it is half the problem. Getting it to look right is the other half. PWNZOR
*removed* I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to repeat over and over that I didn't like Wings.
TheDoctor
Whatever dude, it's your preference. When I used milkshape for a while, most of what you would be doing is clicking on an option on the side panel, unless you knew the shortcut keys. I didn't, so nothing ever really stuck. I'm going to assume that you've been using the Lightwave modeler and you are used to it's controls and have developed muscle memory for the modeler commands. You are used to that, and find it awkward using the Wings control scheme. Not a big issue. If you can use the Lightwave modeler, and that works for you, go for it. It's what we like and can use. Cirevams been using Milkshape for however many years, mouse likes blender, you like lightwave, I like Wings. Whatever, we all like different things and each program has it's ups and downs. Milkshape has the lwo support, blender has whatever, lightwave has it's animation or texture or something support, and wings has the way that it does things, which I like. Tl;dr, you like lightwave, I like wings. Whatever.
PWNZOR
I was just stating what I didn't like about it; there's no need to be brute about it. I'm sorry, okay?
TheDoctor
Brute? Well excuse me for pointing out the differences in what people know and like and how the programs are different.
