Greetings, I am C-3PO, Human-Cyborg Rela...

Oops, wrong choice of words there.

Hello, I'm 40KEndraider (40KEndgame - Game + Raider), and I'm a returning player of Lego Rock Raiders. My main reason for joining the forum is for help with modding LRR, and possibly help people with troubleshooting.

On a side note, does anyone know where I can get a program that can port models to other formats? I'm wanting to port the Large Mobile Laser Cutter to both Trackmania and Garry's Mod.

Willkommen. We have many modeling programs in our inventory that can do what you propose, but many cost money. The only good free one we use is Wings3D and that can import and export into many formats, so you might give that a try. Have a look around the forums, especially in the Modding Tools area: http://www.rockraidersunited.org/index.php?/forum/14-modding-tools/

As for modding, several of us already have overhaul mods in progress. The only one that has been completed is Baz's Mod, and the one currently closest to completion is probably Return to Planet U. We have a tendency to do lots of solo projects, but I've been trying to change people's minds since we're honestly taking too long. You might be able to help someone with completing theirs and make some original mods on the side.

Well hi there.

Here's the thing thing with models, the game was made in 1999, and the models use an ancient Lightwave 5.x format. MilkShape (and of course Lightwave) are the only programs we have found that can import the RR models straight from the game files. If you can get a hold of milkshape, then you can export it as a bunch of other models. Wings3D doesn't like it because it's too old. The other thing is that the models for say, the LMLC, are in seperate chunks. There's not one model for it. A bunch of different things are pulled together ingame to make it. You would need to assemble the model, but I guess that's easier than trying to work with models that you can't import with free programs.

On a side note, the models are not very good looking. We've been doing higher poly stuff here for a while, and they look way better than the origional models. For example, I believe the wheel used on large vehicles is a hollow, six sided cylinder with a triangle covering one side. Or something like that. RR abuses transparency to cover for porly made models.

Wow, thanks for the info, Doc.

I have one more question, mainly about the Legit Copy award. I've owned a legit copy of the game in the past, but since I lost the CD (and the version I had was a 1st release PC version for Win95/98 based systems), I'm having to use a torrent version (don't ask as to where I got it, because I won't tell you where). Would I still qualify for that award, or would the fact that I am currently using a torrent negate it?

Blender, too, can import the models, just not export them to an LRR-compatible format. Doc, make sure you know exactly what you're saying before you say it :P

That's good because if you did you would get banned. There has been a case of this before - if you're going to share illegal links do it via email or something ;)

When I actually had time, I upgraded quite a few models of the game. I made helmets, upgraded the tools, made a LEGO version of the electric fence, made helmets, and made helmets with light cones (which people, namely Cirevam, have implemented) and made my own ore (well, I made 2 versions, as people didn't like my first one *cough*Doc*cough*; I never released my newer, textured version).

I has no time anymore....going to a high school of math, science, and technology (it has 49 characters in it's name >.>) takes away all you're free time.

As far as I know, only Blender and LightWave can successfully import the LRR models, although Wings can use more recent version of LWO's. Only LightWave can export them back to where LRR can use them.

Welcome! I'm sure you'll find a place to fit in here :D.

I'm not sure that porting LRR models to other formats will be worth it...there are so many pieces to each object, and are colored horrifically. Not to mention that EVERY SINGLE game object is covered with textures. Almost no parts are the original model colors anymore.
