HUD = Heads Up Display

An HUD displays helpful information to a user or player to help make good decisions. This is common in first person shooters where the player may want to know what weapon he has out, how much ammo he has, etc.

GUI = Graphical User Interface

A GUI implies that there is input and output going on directly between the user and what is commonly misinterpreted as the HUD. A GUI has buttons, menus, sliders, switches, toggle boxes, etc, which the user can and must interact with for user input. This is common in real-time strategy games (such as LRR), where the user must click and place objects from a menu to the screen, change characteristics of an object through a menu, etc. HUD's are often incorporated into GUI's to display needed information at all times.

-------

This is a rough definition of the two terms. I simply want to clarify that LRR uses a GUI, not an HUD (even if an HUD is incorporated to the GUI).

I see.

Well acording to the all knowing Wikipedia

a graphical user interface (GUI), pronounced gooey,[1] is a type of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices with images rather than text commands.

By this definition, pretty much every game is a GUI. As it allows the user to interact with electronic devices(computer) with images rather than words. Even cod is a GUI, because its not text base.

Again, according to Wikipedia.

Aslo just for fun, HUD can also stand for U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development....

COD uses an HUD. It displays your weapon, ammo, radar, etc, to keep you informed (yes you have a menu, but you must pause the game to interact with it). A GUI means you interact with the "HUD" while the game is active. Many games, including COD, allow you to disable the HUD (sometimes only under special multiplayer conditions).

What Wikipedia is talking about is the difference between typing a command prompt and clicking a shortcut icon.
