Chapter one:

The outpost

In a cavern deep under the surface of an alien planet, a river flowed.

It wound through many caverns, through underground glaciers, and past roaring volcanoes.

Now one day, an unsuspecting raider was plodding down this river.

He had little idea of the significance this river once bore to a race of old.

A kingdom long forgotten!

As the raider went on, around many corners, along nice beaches, and even past a solidified lava flow, he came across some ruins.

There in front of him lay a wall.

The wall was not of Raider origin, for the raiders did not build walls on this planet.

Besides, it was obvious that it was quite old.

Curious, the raider walked forward and through a sweeping arch over the river, with a stone pathway on either side.

To his left and his right were rooms built into the walls of the tunnel.

The raider peered in, and saw what appeared to be some furnishings, and random items strewn about.

This puzzled the raider greatly, for it was obvious that this was no outpost of their making or use.

He strolled in, and sat down in what probably was a chair, although it was more of a throne to him.

There before him lay a large table, made for a giant.

On it were bits and pieces of glowing golden energy crystal.

He said aloud, “What in the world? Pieces of golden glowing mineral that resemble energy crystals!? This makes the discovery all the stranger!â€

Puzzled by all this, he sat back and mused over his findings.

He said to himself, “Hmm...Bits and pieces of golden energy crystal...Strange furniture...Old walls...Rooms not carved out by the raiders...Oh? What's this?â€, he said, peering closely at the wall.

“There appear to be markings in this wall!â€

He studied them closely for several minutes.

They seemed to resemble pictures of a large, empty cavern, with a hoard of energy crystals in a large pile in the center, and on top of this mountain of energy crystals sat a throne!

“Quite a queer thing this is indeed!â€

He looked left, and he looked right, inspecting the engravings closely.

“This seems to be set in a large cavern with many tunnels branching off all over! Now who could have made these?â€

He sat back. Since he had no beard to stroke as he thought, and no pencil to tap, he took to twirling locks of his flowing, dark brown hair.

“Wait a minute! There is more in this room! I should inspect it closely to see what there is to find.â€

He got up, and took a good look around.

Out of this room jutted another room that was build into the wall.

There was a weird material there that served as glass for a window, although it was not glass.

The weird thing was that on the outside, which is the way he had come from, you could not see the window.

But on the inside, it appeared as a clear hole.

The only way you could tell that it was not indeed a hole in the wall was by putting your hand out and feeling the window out.

“Very interesting find indeed, this is! What material could be used to make such a window, I wonder...It blends in with it's surrounding on one side, and on the other, it's as clear as an empty space! Oh, but there is more. Back to the main room.â€

In the main room, he noticed what appeared to be pockets in the wall along the end of the room opposite the side that had the door which he used to enter.

Upon closer inspection, they served as drawers.

In some of them, he found various items.

One was big and deep, and filled with bits and pieces of golden energy crystal.

Another had glass-like bottles, although much stronger than glass, that were filled with what appeared to be slimy slug slime!

“Disgusting!â€, exclaimed the raider.

In another he found all sorts of various tools.

“Apparently the owner of this little room had quite an assortment of tools. I wonder what they all are...Oh, this looks like a chisel!â€, he said, as he pulled out a polished tool that appeared to look much like a chisel, except that it was wide, quite thick throughout, heavy, but extremely sharp at the tip.

It also appeared to have a handle of polished marble, and a 'blade', for I know not what else to call it, of pure diamond.

The raider took the chisel and put it to the test.

Very easily and without much effort, he scraped off a slab of rock as he ran the tool along the wall.

“Amazing! I wish I had one of these when I was but a young child exploring the caves near my home.â€

The raider took one last good look around the room, sucked in his breath, and said, “Well, I'd better be heading back to base.

I'm sure the captain will like to hear about this!â€
