Called "Big Blows," X-1 through X-30 replaced the "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 steam locomotives. Each had a gas tubine for road use and like all of their predicessors, a deisel for yard use and turbine start up. The turbine itself was rated to 10700 hp, but the electric transmission was rated only to 8500 hp.
