Lair
Out of the blue, my CD drive dissapeared. I ran lego island, then closed it, and it was gone. It was not in my computer. It was not in the list of drives. I put a disk in there and heard it starting to read it, but then it stopped. I restarted my computer. Now it's not even recieving power. It won't open run, exist. It's dead. What happened and how do I fix it?
je007
What happened and how do I fix it? If getting the disk back soon is a priority, you could try to manually open the drive. Stick a bent paperclip into the little tiny hole on the front. push. it should open up the drive just enough so that you can get your fingers around it and pull it open the rest of the way. However, I'm not sure if this will damage the drive or not. I've done it when windows won't let me open the drive and it works fine. I've never tried it with power off, though. Amauros
This sounds like a hardware issue, so your drive may have failed and needs replacing. This means opening up your pc (I'm assuming it's a desktop), so you might as well open it and check the connections to be sure something didn't pop loose from vibrations before actually replacing the drive. aLPHA
Most likely your power supply surged and killed it. This happened to me with lego racers 2, except it fried the CPU, hard drive, all the RAM, the BIOS, all CD drives (it had 4), and all the LEDs melted. Oddly, the only thing that survived was a floppy disk drive.
Sonic322
The drive won't receive power or the computer won't receive power? Not saying you are lying but why couldn't this have happened on one of the other 364 days that aren't April Fools day?
STUDZ
Well, I've got a solution, although it isn't the best one: Get the LEGO Island game out of that thing ASAP, sell the laptop to a junk dealer, and buy another laptop. I know, not the best option, but I don't really have any others.
apemax
As je007 said there should be a small hole on the bit of the drive that comes out. The cover of the drive opening. thats a manual release mechanism so you can open the drive without power. then you can stick a paper clip in and the dive should just pop open. Then you can get the disk out. This shouldn't damage the drive.
Lair
(I'm assuming it's a desktop) I've said before I have a laptop. I might as well open it up; the headphone jack needs to be soddered off and replaced Not saying you are lying but why couldn't this have happened on one of the other 364 days that aren't April Fools day? Because my computer hates me. Well, I've got a solution, although it isn't the best one: Get the LEGO Island game out of that thing ASAP, sell the laptop to a junk dealer, and buy another laptop.I know, not the best option, but I don't really have any others. I need a new computer, this one screws with me. And.... now out of the blue, it works again 0_o nevermind.. IT'S GONE AGAIN.

Lair
It's a 2006/2007 laptop. The disk gets power again, but the computer still won't read it

Aki Dazrold
So it regained use and then quit again? Odd. Usually, intermittent problems are sign of heating issues, but as far as I know the only things that are misbehaving are the drive in question and the jack that you damaged ages ago. If these are the only things wrong, then I'd guess your bad drive has a bad power connection or maybe something fried it. You'd probably need to open your case anyway to see what all is wrong in there, so go do that. ASSUMING YOU KNOW HOW. If you don't, get help first. Amauros
I don't think safemode is going to help here H2. All that does is ensure that only the OS boots on startup, which is only helpful if you need to do anti-malware stuff. His faulty drive doesn't have anything to do with malware, it's just a hardware issue and safemode won't help with that.

Lair
This is getting out of hand. Whenever I turn my computer on for the first time that day, it works fine. Then after I've used it a bit/put my computer to sleep and turned back on, it's gone and won't return until the next day. What the heck.

Amauros
LZ is most likely right, your CD drive is fine when you start it up because the computer is still cool. Then when it heats up, you lose it.
aLPHA
Just run it in safe mode. An application might be blocking it. Happened to me once.
Amauros
I highly doubt that H2.
aLPHA
If it's not that then the power supply died somehow. If when this happens, open your laptop (still running) and check the voltage input to the drive. Ambushing below 5 volts or above means junk power supply.
