Greetings.

The main reason that an online Rock Raiders game is hardly discussed is because the original game has no code that would support online interaction (let along multiplayer), and without the source code we can't do anything about it. Your best bet is to look at Open Rock Raiders, a complete remake of the game coded in some form of C. There's an entire subforum dedicated to it here: http://www.rockraidersunited.org/index.php?/forum/72-open-rock-raiders/ Another option is ORR-Delta, which is focusing on 3D, but addictgamer's ORR-C is playable at this point while ORR-D is not.

Hey, welcome to the forums!

An online game? Funny. I was just discussing that with some of the fellow ORR devs earlier today.

Packer is working on such a game. He hasn't posted any updates for a while though...

Oh, and it's FPS styled.

ORR-C is being programmed in C++, ORR-D is being programmed in java.

Feel free to help out with these if you want.

If you want to start a completely new "online lego rock raiders" game, feel free to.

Last time I checked, ORR-D was a python fork. :P

Anyways, whatever you know, there's probably someone you can help with something. I'm a java guy, but I don't know enough to do any kind of ORR project by my self, at least. Recently I've been messing around making an IRC bot, but there's only so much you can do with that. I've made a tool or two though.

Dam well its nice to see there still people alive here. I was playing around with the game changing the menus but it doesn't seem to mean anything if i can mod the game to be online.. Is there no way to mod the game and have someone write or uses a open source service client program to some how turn it in to a online. I think the game is great the way it was FPS isn't needed. But online would be sick.

OK so this is that i got back from DDI

we have seen the rock raiders modding site, and we are impressed, we would love to help, but we were employed to write this software for Lego Media, and they own all the rights to the software, it belongs to them and I couldn't possibly breach their confidence by sending you their code, it would be a form of stealing, as its not ours to give. You would need to contact Lego. Lego media closed down so I have no contacts there anymore. Sorry.

hear that guys there impressed. Not sure if its worth even asking Lego.

We know DDI is impressed by RRU. Karl White (one of the original LRR devs) is a member here and has helped us a bit with modding by answering questions here and there. He also managed to get his hands on source material and other backstory stuff on LRR and he's doing what he can to share it with us without breaking any rules.

Anyways, welcome to the forum! :)

Oh blar. What I was thinking of was RR2 that mouse and Croza are working in. All these names and switching around of projects are confusing me.

Nice.. Do you think asking lego would hurt? or you think they would try to shut down this site.

I'm pretty sure we've talked to lego many times. They haven't shut down the site obviously, and I doubt they ever will as long as we aren't trying to make money doing what we do. We have a couple threads here somewhere of people's emails b/w them and lego, but all I remember is lego stressing the whole "It's LEGO© not lego, Lego, or any derivative thereof." thing. However, I don't think we've ever asked them directly for permission to use the source code of the original game.

Well I asked to help out with the java ORR-D but was told they had enough people Plus that it will not be online. I did get the suggestion to work on one of the other seeing that ORR-D is not going to be online. I don't have much high level exp with C or C++. I do believe that ORR-D is the game that will do it I have start to create a menu and chat lobby for ORR-D java which does lunch in to the game. I hope to take ORR-D and just add the networking and online play in to it. here are some screen shoots of what i have so far. Nothing that looks to nice but the chat is working . Next step is getting a map changer and the server to client join game code. I give 100% credit to the makers of ORR-D I am basically taking there game and adding online. I was told its ok by bartvbl as long as i re-name it so im gonig to call it Open Rock Raiders Online. ORR-O. If ORR-D doesn't seem to be getting updated i will have to start added to the game it self.

What do you guys think?

I must say that this seems like quite a fast development of networking ORR-D into ORR-O. Then again, you do have resources from other games that are already networked. I look forward to seeing some new updates, but please make your own topic for ORR-O in the ORR section of the forum. ;)
