Install Windows Xp To External Hard Drive...possible, But Help Me?

Ok guys, this is blunt. I'm lazy. Too damn lazy for my own good. I found a way to install XP to an external hard drive, but the steps I have to take are near insanatising...that is, they are damn long steps...

The self-extracting tutorial with some of the files required is here: http://www.winusb.de/tutorial5.exe

Basically, I need someone to complete all the steps and send me the near-finished product so I can run the disk and install Windows. If you need the CAB SDK, I can provide.

However, if you find a better tutorial, please let me now. And ngine.com is down, so don't post any links to that website...

PS: I'd install Vista which supports loading it onto external hard-drives, but my sound card isn't supported and the Product Key my parents got with the computer doesn't work even after "activating"...

The problem with having XP on portable media is the fact that it *reallY* doesn't like changing computers. Like, it bluescreens upon boot if the hardware isn't close enough because it kinda locks down the specific drivers, and then you have to do a "repair install" to fix it which locks it to THAT computer.

There's also the bit that the tutorial has installing XP FIRST, and that makes it so people can't exactly set it up for you to run windows with the USB drive set as the install point. You have to modify the files once they're installed.

Why you want portable windows, I don't know; same with portable OSes in general.

Well, the reason I want a Portable OS is essentially the reason why people want a Laptop; they want to take THEIR computer with them wherever they go.

My dad recently had a stress attack at me and got me to remove my OS and put it on a External HDD, insisting he would delete any files I put on "his" internal HDD (Which I ironically paid for). Therefore, to run my programs, I want my own drive and OS (I don't want to Partition because my files take up near 1TB). The external drive bit is just for portability sake, in that I could take it to school and transfer games and movies and work to my friends and teachers computers.

I guess instead I'll have to wait for that laptop I've been saving up for...

OH GOD HERE COMES A SOLIOQUY...

My family essential works under the fasicim system. And my Mum is the corrupt part of the Government. My dad hates on me, and he assumes that anytime I touch a computer, I break it. Therefore, he thinks it's his God-chosen right to tell me, despite the fact I've spent $200+ on repairs and more than 3 weeks worth of life-time wasted keeping this hunk o' junk runing, that he owns it and that I shouldn't be using it.

If I had $10-odd thousand, I'd have made my own custom built super-computer by now (I make computers for other people, but I don't get to used the finished product...). But I don't. So I have to use what I HAVE to use.

Well I have a solution. Firstly stop using and fixing the computer.

When it breaks do this:

Troll hard.

Meanwhile, save up for your own PC. I built a decent i5, 1TB HDD, 1GB GFX, 4GB RAM, Win7 for my grandmother for under 1k. And once again, rinse and repeat (trolling part).

DISCLAIMER: You heard none of this from me. I will not be held responsible for possible groundings in the future and you follow this advice at your own risk.

That bottom line is exactly what would happen...if you replace "groundings" with "severe beatings and property steallings". And I'm not looking for a cheap 1k computer. I'm looking for something to be way more menacing than "The Beast" (of PCPP Fame)...so excuse me if I go buy i7 Extreme Edition, 12GB DDR3 RAM, 4 2TB 5200RPM drives in RAID 0+1, a Triple Display moniter (I found it but I forgot the name) and much more...

Oh pfft, i7 isn't worth anything for stuff of that extreme, go dual Xeons and 24GiB of RAM with four-way SLI. Also raid is basically wasting your time and happily rendering your computer unbootable if it messes up.

Oh pfft, I can get i7 Extreme way cheaper than you think, and in Quad Core, so screw Xeons and 23GBs of RAM (I'm running XP; it only uses 3.6GBs anyway...). And I'll be prepared for any RAID errors.

Xeons aren't just quad core. They go up to hex-core. With multi-threading. And TWO of them. Also XP should have died a very, very long time ago and shouldn't be considered for new PCs at all. As for raid, it's better to use half those drives for backups and have lots of extra storage. You do realise what raid is, right?

FINE. I'LL SPEND MORE MONEY ON XEONS. NOW I HAVE TO FIND A MOTHERBOARD THAT'LL USE THEM. lol

I use XP because I know everything about it; I can fix it with minor hassles...but I guess Windows 7 isn't out of the question either...

From what I've learnt, RAID sets the drives into different modes which control how it functions. RAID 0+1 Puts two in the Data Stripping mode for faster access, and two in Mirror mode for Backing up the two Stripper (;P) Drives.

I suggest forgetting about a RAID. I mean, firstly, what the hell do you need 8TB for, secondly, if you really need them, just make separate filesystems on them. A lot safer, and you only lose out on less than 1MB of space.

About OS... I'm very sorry, but linux (ubuntu tends to be very good for newer users). You can install it anywhere and it'll let you use it anywhere. Seeing as you probably really do need windows though, I too say windows 7.

I need 8TB because this is my dream computer and I want a lot of storage space. And making a seperate filesystem just doesn't work for me.

I really hope you are going to have a SSD in there because your PC will still be teh lamezorz without one.

He wants storage space. Anything above 256GB made of flash costs such insane amounts that it is truly insane to buy. 1TB, so says google at the first glance, will cost upwards of 2000 USD (which also according to google is about 1800AUD). I don't really think a small increase in storage speed is worth that much.

And what's the problem with multiple filesystems? I can't imagine you having files bigger than 2TB, and RAIDs can be slightly more prone to failure (unless you have redundancy which divides the capacity, usually by 2). And that means one hard drive blows, ALL your data's gone.

As for windows, I facepalmed. Really. There's no point in having such a powerful machine if you don't put a modern OS on it. No DX11, sucky threading capabilities, and no way to use more than 3.6GB of RAM as you said. I say windows 7 or linux or both.

That's in yen, right? [/shamelesstoystoryquote] Well, since the whole good PC would be a total of $10,000+AU, I might as well add to it with these expensive hard-drives...

I just don't want to have to deal with more than one OS. Since I already have a server for which I can back-up data to the value of 2TBs, so I'm good for if RAID decides to blow.

Well, I'm reconsidering now. But the first thing I do isn't just disable Aero, it's remove it completely. I really hate Aero. I hate the "memory managment" with it's big RAM sucking capabilities, and more-over, I hate the look of Aero. Instead, I'm going to install Rainmeter and customise that, then get rid of every single uneeded UI element...if I get 7.

You want 8TB, right? That makes 8x1800AUD right? That makes 14400 JUST FOR STORAGE, if I am not entirely mistaken. Really so sure?

You don't need more than one OS for separate filesystems, you can just mount them to different locations (in linux) or assign them different drive letters (C through Z) in windows. And you can't back up 8TB of data on a 2TB drive.

It's not about aero, it's about the functionality. Go ahead and do as you like in terms of features of windows 7 (or vista LOL), but don't. use. xp.

Well then. I officially give up arguing with you, and I go ahead to the computer shop to buy a PC.

Ben has a cold.

Ben has died.

Stupid "The Windows Store Trail"...

Anway, really, I have no complaints about 7 apart from Aero and the extra steps it takes to play older games...on Windows XP, everything is extremely simple for me.
