Lair
I've disliked this computer for a while. The hard drive is full of crap, the Headphone Jack is caved in (my own fault for being stupid), the Removable Disk Drive keeps loosing connection with the computer (not my fault, it overheats somehow), the fan is loud and hot, the battery is dead, the plug already broke once, etc. But now I've finally had it. Recently, I mounted a Power Crystal on a Small Transport Truck. The result was absolutaly hillarious, so I decided to take a video. When I posted the video on youtube, it froze at 0:10. I went back to the WMV file. It did the same. I tried the AVI file I had converted it from. It sorta did that. The whole thing was there, but it froze. Not at 0:10, but a random position. When it did, WMP locked up, then Skype froze, then Task Manager froze, but everything else was normal. Then WMP said "Unable to open file" and... crashed. I tried again, it did the same freeze, and... It poped up a message saying my entire library had been corrupted. The entire library database was not just deleted, but corrupted. Because I watched one video that froze everything. I tried to delete the file then. IT WOULDN'T DELETE. No, not like that "you need permission from TrustedInstaller" message that I hate, IT JUST WOULDN'T DELETE AT ALL. Cirevam said I had a corrupted sector on my hard drive and to run disk error-check. He also told me to backup because last time he did that his computer... COMPLETALY DIED. But it wasn't the default one. SO I'd like to hear what other people think and suggest while I look for that darn FOURTH external hard-drive.
Addictgamer
This has happened to my desktop's HD. Eventually the entire thing corrupted. I couldn't repair it at all, and neither could the computer service people. I threw that hard drive away and now am using a new one.
McJobless
Hmm...I guess it's busted. I want to remain hopefull for you, but both addict and Cirevam seem to think it's the HDD. Do you have that Recovery partition/disk? You can access some tools like FixMBR, FixBoot and chkdsk which might be able to help.
Cirevam
chkdsk That's what I was suggesting to Lair.

PWNZOR
You may me unable to boot off of that disk, but can you still convert it to an external and recover the files?
Cirevam
I told Lair to back his stuff up before he runs the disk check in case it blows up and causes his hard drive to become unbootable. It's not dead yet. He can still boot but when it locks up when trying to hibernate... that's when things start looking serious.
TheDoctor
The best solution might be save as much as you can and just get a new computer. I think there's some adage about a dying horse, but I cant be bothered to look it up.
Tracker
If you have a cleanroom, you can try to rebuild the drive.

DrDeath
backup the drive then do a complete format of the drive also you may want to use some test with something like this first http://download.cnet.com/Hard-Drive-Test-Pilot/3000-2094_4-10552450.html to see if it is really a failing drive or just corruption that can be removed through format
bartvbl
I would suggest backing up all the data you can, booting any linux distro from a live CD (I'd recommmend slackware, as it wont be eating any system resources needed for the GUI), and running badblocks. It is way more reliable than the default windows one. Preferrably, you should use the -w and -t flags (if I remember correctly); they make the program write to the harddisk and read it back. Of course that means all data is lost, but at least you know for sure whether your harddisk is sitll operaitonal. If badblocks outputs any bad sectors, rip out the harddisk and throw it. If not, I would suspect that a virus might have sneaked into your pc.
Lair
booting any linux I lost all interest here. It's not a virus, it's a corrupted sector that needs repairing.
TheDoctor
booting any linux I lost all interest here. I know linux can fix certain things (like fsck), but if you're not willing to use it you might as well take it to get if fixed because Windows is certainly not going to help you. Acmex
As much as chkdsk is decent for what's supplied with windows, and it's the only proper filesystem check for ntfs, chances of it finding the underlying bad sectors are minimal, at best. S.M.A.R.T. (No, I'm not joking. It's Self-Monitoring and something something. Look it up), if your drives support it (most do now) they'd end up being able to detect the most major of problems like imminent death but I'm not sure if it'll pick up the smaller sectors (blocks) that are actually going bad. Badblocks, however, will. Heck, if you think it's as bad as you say you shouldn't be using it regularly and should have everything backed up, even cloned, to another harddisk. You're down to either bart's way or your local computer store, who will probably simply replace the drive, clone the old one (Or reinstall windows), and charge you a massive amount of money for it. Have fun.

totheark
Just save as much as it as you can, then kthxbai. Then, go get a new one, and don't go and put your pingas in your computer while it's turned on.
