Emulation

So people have been telling me stuff about some N64 games that apparently will make my head explode and splatter Canaberry cream filling all over the walls, so I was thinking about opening a discussion of emulators (specifically, how might I play a Certain zelda game) when my friend told me a "fun fact": Emulation is technically illegal if you have not purchased a copy of the N64 game and have no other means of playing it.

So consider this forum post a request for permission to discuss and ask for links to emulators. Piracy is frowned upon here, and I rather not step on any toes.

I wonder if it is still illeagal to make an OS emualte a bunch OSystems if you still have some of the OSystems it emulates (in my case it's RaiderOS (the emulator) and all past, current, and future mainstream systems (the emulated)). I don't want to step on toes either.

  1. I wonder if it is still illegal to make an OS emualte a bunch OSystems
  2. OSystems
  1. Normaly things don't just stop being illegal Tracker.
  2. Most people know what OS stands for Tracker. Plus, why would you say "OSystems"? That's like calling it OperatingS or something else that is silly.

The problem with that is that I've never seen or heard anyone use the term "ATM machine".

Besides that, epic is looking for N64 emulators and I've been the only one ontopic here. Come on people.

He could just, y'know, buy an N64.

I have one. It works.

He should stop being a cheapass and buy one. <_< Seriously.

This is not ture for certain games, specifically for other consoles. Well, at least, not in Australia.

Case-in-point: Playstation 1 games. All free and legal as far as my government is concerned.

Discussion emulators is fine since the software itself is perfectly legal. Just don't post links to game downloads.

I don't know what birdy you've been listening to. Unless you own a PS1, having the a PS1 BIOS is illegal.

What about very old games like NES or Atari games?

Technically some games can be overlooked due to their age.

Ah, the point I forgot to denote...

But, I have a PS1. Or, had. I stripped it of a memory card, some games (making subsequent .iso files) and it's BIOS before my dad stole it and threw it out...

That's not true anymore with Virtual Console and Xbox Live re-releasing retro games. Ninty and MS expect you to spend hundreds of dollars on a new console that will wear out in a decade to play old games that still work on their original consoles that are over 25 years old. Besides, unless they figure out a way to connect the original controllers from those consoles to modern consoles, it's not worth it to me. I can't play classic games without classic controllers.

You could always get one of those cheap "plug 'n' play" thingies for your TV.

They use pretty legit controllers.

Naw I'm joking, those things are terrible.

I just want to play 1 or 2 N64 games. I'm not going through the process of purchasing an outdated console for the sole purpose of playing 2 games. Not even that. Just one.

And I want to play it in it's old N64 glory with all the piss parts. I don't get why people re-release a game with fancy new graphics. The piss is what we learned from. Games that don't learn from the piss parts... Remember that part in BioShock where you had to dress up like a big daddy and escort a little sister about? I don't know about you but a majority of people thought that was the worst part of the game. AND GUESS WHAT THEY MADE BIOSHOCK 2'S CORE ADAM COLLECTING METHOD?

Is emulating out-dated systems that the company went out of business illegal? IE, X64 (Commodore 64 emulator). Besides, alot of the games were technically free.

Xbox Live re-releasing retro games.

Sony has also been re-releasing PS1 games on PSN since quite sometime ago.

Old console a relatively cheap now unless you get ones that are rare or special models.

If the games were share-ware, i'd say it fine. However these companies also had rights to their games etc... bought out by another company.
