TheEPICtrainrider
So yes, I'm abusing my contacts on this server for free tech support. I promise I'll make some sort of fan art to pay my dews, or something else, I don't know. Anyways, I have a TOSHIBA satilite C655d that I only use for Itunes* and web browsing when I need to concentrate. It has a 1.5 GB core, along with 2.60 Gb of RAM running Windows 7 64-bit. So what's the problem? I don't use it. Like ever. It's only for Itunes and web browsing. Meaning that , every time I open it up, it needs to shutdown a few dozen times to install updates. Which is annoying. So I'm wondering if there is a free, open source alternative to Windows, that has been proven to run itunes, and is really quick to update. I know I should google it frist, but I need this laptop, and I rather not install something I'd regret. If you can help me, that'll be great, and I'd very much appreciate it. If you can't, that's okay well I'll manage. I'm just hoping you guys won't get mad at me for taking advantage of you. heh, heh heh... heeeeeeeh. [/nervous laugh] * To keep my nerd cred: itunes gift cards are a common form of birthday gifts in my family. That, and alot of youtube parody songs are up on there. Cyrem
Why not turn off automatic updates? Control Panel > System and Security > Turn automatic updating on or off. As far as I know only Windows and Mac run itunes. You could turn your laptop into a Hackintosh, however that requires that you have OSX and quite a bit of time on your hands. Phoenyx
I would suggest Ubuntu with WINE, but even that needs to update. Disable automatic updates and update manually.
TheEPICtrainrider
Well, the REAL reason is that Windows takes up alot of CPU, and I was hoping opensource OS's would be less of a burden.
McJobless
You could disable automatic updWAIT A SECOND, THIS IS WINDOWS 7. Well, in that case...you could just get an XP partition. Much better, and you can disable Automatic Updates. And Rock Raiders has worked first try on more XP systems than 7...
Phoenyx
If it's open source you want then Ubuntu with WINE is my recommendation. You could disable automatic updWAIT A SECOND, THIS IS WINDOWS 7. I've gotten it to work (although I can't get it to stop nagging me to re-enable it). The key is to allow automatic download without installing, then install when you're done using your system. Cirevam
I've never had problems disabling Windows Update. Occasionally it whines that new updates are available, but that can be ignored. As for iTunes, I know there's some third-party version of it that comes with Ubuntu. It even integrates with iPods. TheDoctor
I don't even know why you bother with itunes. Oh wait, you buy music from itunes, don't you. In such a case, Ubuntu would be what you want with Rhythmbox (which comes with most debian based linux distros) because both of those are cool. As for updates, that's easy. Ubuntu uses APT which is tremendously superior in every way to whatever windows does.
