Phoenyx
I've seen Firefox do this in the past, and obviously games like Team Fortress 2 and Garry's mod can exceed over a GB of usage at times, but this is the first time I've seen LDD use that much RAM, and it lags worse than YouTube during rushhour (1 frame per minute, anyone?). I'm suspecting a serious RAM leak.
TheDoctor
Well, considering that it probably loads the definitions for every LEGO piece is has, how much ram do you think it should use?
Phoenyx
4.1.2 used only about 50 MB or so for me, even with extended mode enabled. I enabled compatibility mode and it seemed to greatly help.
McJobless
They are using a newer graphics engine, and the aren't using the DirectX library like they should be, making it highly unefficient memory usage.

Turns out they are using OpenGL (like I suggested a long while back so that additional software would not have to be installed), but it seems like they just ported the program instead of integrating the graphics engine. Bingo. Presumably, the department making LDD is specifically focused on the bricks and the integration of DesignByMe, and not focusing on getting the software to be optimised for large brick counts.
