You started a server way to close to the 1.8 update. It is understandable that it was never meant to work right after that and you are not skilled enough at Bukkit to make it work.

Just go on RRU-Stuff, build a house and have some fun. I am in creative mode so I can give you any supplies you might need.

I've calmed down, the ban isn't necessary (in fact my resolve to protect the work of myself and others has never been stronger), but from what I can tell from the log the griefer was someone called "ADrunkenMonkey", since there were several entity tile errors after he first logged in.

As for the damage, ICT tower was turned into a Volcano and Cobblestone City commons and the nearby forest were burned to the ground. I have reason to believe the Nether colony is under several meters of lava (I never checked, I was too upset at that point). I could see the light of a fire over by Birchwood City, and the lighthouse, a major landmark on Gravel Island, was completely destroyed.

I think the redstone lab is still intact, however. He wouldn't have found it unless he had an X-Ray vision pack, it's too far underground and hard to reach by digging straight down (there's a natural pocket of lava above it).

What incentive do people have to grief? What do they believe they will gain? How could someone take pleasure in destroying other people's work?

Also, is RRU-Stuff 1.8 compatible? I could build a refugee's camp there for people on here who have lost their homes to griefers there.

Edit: RRU-Stuff is using a whitelist now. I guess that idea is gone...

I dunno, I guess some people get bored. Now, as for me griefing on 40K's server, mark my words, I DON'T bite the hand that feeds me. I can only go on 2 servers in MC Beta (40K's and Addict's), so I'm not going to push my luck and grief something awesome like this random MC server that was devastated.

Also, I think there's a way to reverse the damage the griefer inflicted on your server... I think you delete the user's DAT file or something... I'm not sure.

But don't give up! We can always rebuild!

I see. I'll check and see if deleting the player's .DAT file works.

As for the server allowing non-registered players, just put the server on offline mode. This way the server won't try to connect with minecraft.net but you can still connect using the stand-alone client. It also allows players to use the server via LAN even if the network the server is on doesn't have an internet connection, so it's a legit solution without mods or hacks.

I believe you mean 40K's and Anon's/MSSSSM's server. Addict's server isn't updated to 1.8.1 yet. At least I don't think it is. RRU-Stuff belongs to Anon and MSSSSM.

Deleting the player.dat will only remove the items in their inventory and reset there spawn point. Or at least I think that is what it does.

Well, it seems that the server was minged rather than griefed. Other than the fire (I've seen stuff like that used to crash servers on garry's mod) and the attempt at turning empire city into a second nether, he didn't do anything. I really overreacted.

Empire City is fixed give or take a couple details, most of the other damage is now under repair but unfortunately the lighthouse was burnt to the ground, that will have to be rebuilt from scratch.

I had some experiences with griefers, just add a whitelist to your server and tell people to ask you here to get added on the whitelist.

This is what happens when people should keep logs, but don't. As for fixing the damage, either you don't let people on who would do that (whitelist), or get WorldGuard or some other safety mod.

He doesn't know how to set up permissions which is why he doesn't have plugins like that.

First, that's not my problem. Second, you don't need perms for a logging program. If he wants to have advanced tools but only give them to certain people, then he's going to have to learn how to do it correctly.

Yeah, it might have been highjacked, cause I spawned at a place I had never been to before, when I should have spawned in my house. But no, I don't think it was hijacked by a sibling. I only have a brother and he's 9...

Maybe it was someone with a cracked copy of MC. I can log in with any name I want on my version. Someone probably used s0d's username to cover his tracks (and it was NOT me.)
