What If The Internet Stopped Existing?

Conspiracies, theories? Discuss.

I think, if the Internet stopped existing, the whole world will be blown into an economic RHAGE and then the universe will turn into a black hole and implode in itself

Pic related, it's the universe in a black hole

The world is so connected these days that if the internet just stopped then people would not be able to stay up to date with things. Not to mention all the technology and stuff that needs the internet to work right.

The earth would not fly into a black hole although there would be mass hysteria and panic.

So in conclusion it is very unlikely hat the internet will just up and stop working. (Unless people continue using IPv4 instead of IPv6. Right guys who know what I am talking about?)

At the moment there really isn't a way to 100% kill the internet. The internet being described as a "web" is misleading, it's more like a net with no central location, very few if any choke-points (I'm looking at you, Georgia/Armenia border), few filters and thousands of nodes. It would take a massive CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) to knock out every single node, and by then there would be worse things going on besides the internet being down.

This episode of Hungry Beast (I've been watching it on Youtube) would explain it better.

Even if it did somehow go completely offline without any collateral damage what-so-ever, I doubt that beyond short lived mass hysteria and some technology going offline not much would happen. We would still have phone lines, we would still have TV, we would still have modern utilities like running water and electricity, and our computers, although they wouldn't be connected to anything, would still be online.

If somehow the only reason the internet is down is because the internet is down (maybe the main http servers were mass DDoS'd and had crashed) most other network protocols would work, including FTP, Manialink, and a concept internet replacement I have in the works called Monsoon would still be operational.

In all cases, minus the CME and equivalents, the outage would be 100% repairable and you likely wouldn't even notice if it happened at night.

I lived without internet for the first ten years of my life, and even though we've become so dependent on it for information gathering today, I could live without it again. Like 40k said, we have television and telephones. I kinda feel bad for anyone that's young enough to not remember a time when you couldn't turn to the internet for gathering information, but then again, our parents likely remember a time when they didn't have computers at all.

I actually grew up around the time universal browsers were phasing out self contained clients. Dial-up was still all we had and our first computer was running Microsoft Chicago (Windows 95 Beta RC1 - it was a business deal). That poorly coded abomination Bob was still very common at the time and Apple hadn't even adopted the orphaned OS2 yet, instead struggling to build something on top of IBM's command line OS.

I remember when the internet actually started to become what it is today.

Also, my mother's first experience with a computer was the old resource library data-cruncher (as in a bunch of tapes on reels for data storage combined with a giant 8-bit full adder, an even bigger multiplexer and little to no RAM) that used to live in half the basement of the art institute in Chicago. Today the thing couldn't even run notepad, but back then it was state of the art.

I'd be getting sex every day.

In your dreams you mean.

I assume you know how lucid dreaming works. I mean how else would you achieve that goal?

I would be improving that thing I have, you know, a "life".

But on a serious note, that made my day and night which had been filled with a heap of bad memories from the 20 hour flight...thank you.
