LEGO Universe To Close In 2012

WOW.....

Lego I NEVER expected this from you.

I never played LU but the first trailer looked pretty good.

But then after the redesign...well it just went down hill.

Still I'm VERY surprised that Lego would close down LU after it hit over 2 million in 1 year.

And in response to the same formula for each console game I don't mind it.

... I say that we spam LEGO with a bunch of complaint letters/Emails, DEMANDING that they make LU free-to-play. I mean, WHY would they just kill the game instead of making it F2P? I just don't understand...

It costs money to run LU's servers. I don't know if LEGO runs them personally or not since I've never played LU, but F2P usually means "we have so much money that we don't care anymore." What they needed was microtransactions, but hey, LEGO doesn't care.

...LEGO is the #1 toy company in the WORLD. I'm almost certian they would have a few bucks to spare... Especially after they dropped the quality of their product.

LU was making LEGO LOSE money. As one former WBL member put it, the goal for LEGO Universe in 2012 was to simply lose less money then they had lost in 2011 and all the years of development. Yes, they should have tried microtransations IMO, but the decision to axe the game was made first. They'd had enough of it costing them.

When Lego announced the price of Lego Universe (being about 10€ per month) I wondered the first time whether there were really enough people to pay as much money as they would e.g. for WoW or other games. When they offered some areas for free, I wondered again. For some reason, I don't wonder about this message...

The idea of the game was not bad at all, but neither in the area of lego players nor in the area of online gamers are enough people who like it.

I wish they published the server data etc. so people could open private servers, create mods or build their own adventures. THAT would be awesome :)

WTF, LEGO!?!? You finally make a great MMO, has 2 MILLION players in a little over a year, and they can the whole operation due to MONEY. MONEY. Seriously??? Coming from the company that didn't really care about the green stuff before (unless you're talking about Green bricks), this is pretty stupid. What, after that big loss in '04 or something like that, you guys are all about the cost of your product?

I've noticed. I've been watching you ever since. Your toys have declined in quality the past few years. You killed BIONICLE, just to "Try other ideas". I mean, Hero Factory isn't TOO bad, but it's still not BIONICLE. The last BIONICLE movie AND the Clutch Powers movie were FAIL. And ENOUGH WITH THE SAME FORMULA FOR YOUR CONSTOLE GAMES, ALREADY.

Getting rid of LU was the last straw. I was hoping you'd be able to crawl out of the greedy little hole you've dug yourselves in, but to no avail. YOU HAVE LOST MY RESPECT. I still love your product, but you've made some pretty cr@ppy descisions the past few years. Your motto is no longer "Only the best is good enough". It's more like "The best is OK, as long as we get more money."

LEGO. I am disappoint. I still love your toys, but some things need to change, quality-wise.

:'( :wimp::rf: I BETA-TESTED that game! ME, a LOYAL FAN, went and spent MY time, with NO PAY, for something PROFIT will be made off, finding every glitch in the stinking game! There isn't even an early players credits. Then after beta I want to play and I have to wait a YEAR before they make free-to-play, which only lets you go to 2 places! I eventually decide that I'm gonna buy the game right when they take it off the internet! LEGO, YOU LOST MY RESPECT! AND ONE LAST THING! LEGO, SHALL BE RESPECTED ONCE MORE IF LEGO UNIVERSE ISN'T DISCONTINUED! (or if Lego harry potter years 5-7 is awesome. I got it for Christmas but I haven't gotten the chance to check-it-out yet.)

I didn't care for that game or any other MMORPG, unless you count Minecraft (I don't - it's too much of a sandbox game), but what TLG should do is release the game as open source rather than close it completely. It's what happened to MUD2 and what will happen to Minecraft and the scripts for my own project, Eta Carnia.

TLG's decision to shut down Universe due to low sales is an uncharacteristic move from a company that cares (or at least used to care) more for quality and customer satisfaction than maximizing profits.

@Lab44oss Could you please fix your signature? It's a bit wide, even on 1600x900.

Take a chill pill. You whine when you get no pay or mention in the credits for being one of thousands of random beta testers, when beta testers get an exclusive in-game shirt, and alpha testers (like myself) which were testing LEGO Universe even before then with much more glitches and unfinished features didn't even get that, just some free in-game bricks that anybody can get. Yet you don't see any alpha testers, or usually, beta testers, complaining because LEGO didn't give them money or a mention or something. You got to play the game over half a year before public release. For free. What more could you possibly want? I would have payed LEGO to do the testing I did, and you're complaining because you didn't get payed for playing their game? :|

Also, the 115 people who were working on this game until cancellation lost their jobs. Some, like community manager Figmentia, have already moved away from the studio and have started work elsewhere. The studio has been closed. LEGO couldn't bring this game back even if they wanted to, they fired everybody who was working on it, the only people they didn't fire are the ones they absolutely need (moderators, and people to keep the servers running). There's no reconsidering. LEGO Universe is done.

Sorry if this post seems rant-ish (ironic since I opened by asking somebody to calm down), but I get rather ticked off when I see a "loyal fan" whining about how they didn't get money or a mention for playing a game half a year early, when they actually got more rewards then people who had been playing and testing for a year before launch, and even then, simply playing the game early and seeing it change through development is enough of a reward in and of itself, at least it is for me, especially when it was all free.

I can definitely understand. I also did BETA testing and received no benefits for doing so. Heck when the game was released they didn't even offer it for sale in my country. They were going to allow aussies to buy it from the end of this year, then they decided to shut it down. LEGO basically did a "thanks testing the game for us and saving us money on employing professional game testers... now piss off". But it was worse...I didn't even get a 'thanks for beta testing email' when the game was released.... all I got was "Game is released, now go pay some ridiculous price to play the still lacking game. OH WAIT YOU CAN'T HAHAHAHA!"

I was happy seeing as to how the UK server was full of idiots. Truly were. I always hogged that gorilla in Crux Prime and they started crying then a moderator had to warn me.

Now that I think about it I didn't get a thanks e-mail either. Anyway I found a goodish substitute for LEGO Universe called Roblox. Here it is http://www.roblox.com/Default.aspx

I still have several things to complain about such as, I never got the shirt thing, you can see what kinda reward alpha players got, Minecraft had a early players credits and I don't think any of those people ever paid, other than Johnny Thunder no old minifigures where recycled and finally the people who made the game got fired! this is why Roblox ( http://www.roblox.com/Default.aspx ) is much better; it's servers are fan-run. :rf:

I was comparing roblox to lego universe not minecraft! (roblox does kinda suck and you have to pay to create servers and no one who could actually make a good one wouldn't be willing to pay. I should of looked into it more before suggesting it.)

Oh, wad. Roblox.

I actually made a pact to never play that again after LU came out. Now LU is almost gone...

TERRARIA TIME!

BTW, I still play Minecraft, but I'm starting to become interested in Terraria... a mate of mine is getting addicted to it (like when I introduced MC to him)... Maybe I'll try a cracked version...

If you want Terraria, I suggest entering the Steam gift giveaways every once in a while so you a least have a chance to get it free, there is currently two for Terraria going on right now.

I was one of the 'lucky' Beta Testers for that game and I really liked it! It´s a shame they gonna shut it down, but if it's not generating any revenue I can understand this step. Managing a MMO is not an easy task and the fact that this game was produced for kids (Age 6-16) in comparison to WoW (Average Age 16-36) reveals that young people just don't have that much money to spend on a game.

Sad, but they also abandoned Rock Raiders... :'(

LU is going down tomorrow so, now what?

I just realized that the only reason I liked roblox was because it uses voxels and it's against SOPA and PIPA
