Hi I am new so I am trying to get used to RR modding anyway what are the tool(s) needed to recolor models?

Like for example: I want to recolor the arms of a Rock Raider(or as they are called in the rock raider data folders as "Pilot")

A simple step by step instruction would help also and please provide the link to the tool(s) thanks

Edit: Forgot to add that if this topic doesn't belong here please move it to where it needs to go again thanks

Welcome to RRU...I haven't seen a topic made in full bold yet, so...nice.

ANYWAYS, for TEXTURING, there's a couple of ways you can go about it. You'll first need to extract the WAD files, which you can learn through THIS tutorial. Next, you can either directly edit the 8/16-bit (I can't remember which) textures with a program like Paint.Net, or you can use a modeling program, mainly Lightwave, to recolour/retexture the models. I recommend using the first method. Then, you'll need to recompile the WAD files, or put everything in your Data Folder. We'll get to that step when we get to it.

Post if you have any trouble, but otherwise enjoy!

P.S: It's in the right place, don't you worry ;P

I do have the LRR files extracted from the WAD and copied into the Data folder already. I do hope you can remember with 8/16 bit textures you are talking about and is Paint.Net the same as microsoft Paint?

Nah, I can't remember, but I do know that Paint.Net is pretty much the only program I've used which indexs the textures correctly and automatically. And yes, it's a much better version of paint, as it also supports layering, and its free.

Hmm...is the texture you are trying to remember called Pbodytop which is Arms and Side of Legs?

...what? No, no....what I was trying to remember was this complex programming stuff you don't need to worry about. But yeah, those things are what you want to colour.

There are two set of arms for Pilot. One is the bicep set, the other is the GC set. The difference is that the GC set has elbows and it uses a different texture. That texture is A000_Triman.bmp, which is in the WorldShared folder. If you don't change this or change what texture the GC arms use, you'll see orange arms when raiders shovel rubble or drive certain vehicles. The biceps use Pbodytop.bmp, which is in the Pilot folder.

For editing these, anything that can save 8-bit or 256-colour BMPs will work. However, Paint.NET makes things so easy because you don't have to mess with a colour index like you would in Gimp. If you must, edit your textures in any program you want, but save them as 8-bit BMPs using Paint.NET.
