That's pretty much how RRU goes.

Yeah, I forgot how silly we can be. It's been too long.

Screw you RAM limit, why are you even there? No really, WHY is there a RAM limit? Would the computer explode if a 32bit OS tried to use more than 6GB?

It has to do with how memory addresses are stored. I could be completely wrong, but 32-bit OSes can only have 32 bits (or four bytes) to define each memory address, and 64-bit OSes can have twice as many. This means that 64-bit allows you to have more RAM because there can be more unique memory addresses. So yes, a 32-bit computer would explode if it tried to use more than 6 GB because if you tried to access any memory locations outside of whatever the 32-bit's maximum is, then it will either loop around to the 0th location (frosting up whatever memory is already there) or something else bad.

I think 64 bit just means you can add memory to your heart's consent. My dad runs the IT department in Husky Refining Co. and the server computers have Windows 7 64 bit with 64 bit processors, but they have well over 2400 GB (or 2.4 TB) of RAM and can read and write all 2TB of memory.

Windows Vista can board the next rocket to the sun for all I care. Win 7 is almost the same, but like 20 times lighter. I think Vista was forced through the beta way too fast. Windows 7 is basically Vista, but without all the pointless programs. I like Windows 7.

(where does Ubuntu come in this conversation? :smug: )

I didn't have much of a problem with it other than it sucking processing power, the awful UAC, and the plethora of compatibility issues.

The worst Windows OS to be released. While it did get better towards the end of it's life, it was too late.

What about NT

What about NT

NT isn't a specific version, it's the whole Windows family.

What about Windows ME?

I never got into computers until after XP was released. So I've never used anything earlier except for 98 when fixing some older computers.

This. Except that I did have a Windows ME laptop for several years... Mom always wondered why I kept borrowing her XP laptop. I then inherited her XP laptop, and she got one running Vista (against my and Dad's advice). It was fine for her, except whenever I had to do something to fix it. Now the whole family runs 7 64x. Haven't had any bluescreens not related to jostling the PCIe card in my open case since.

And yes, I do like waffles, especially of the Belgian variety.

My experience with WinME wasn't terrible, when things screwed up it was something else causing the problem and it was fixable, until lighting trashed the network card, then it seemed to run better! That said, it was over hauled a few years ago and put back into the reserve line.

I also saw some people complain about the limitations of IA-32. It processors can often support 64 GiB, but the other hardware drivers don't know how to deal with the extension format.

We have three XP machines, and one vista. And all of the XP ones, which two have less than a gigabyte of RAM and one core, and the other has one core and proudly displayes on the box: 128Mb of RAM. Yep, our computers are that ancient.

And the XP ones (even the 128MB one) ALL run faster than our Vista one, which has two cores and 4Gb of RAM. (It's 32-bit)

I think it's because Vista is basically a reskin of XP (It practically is) with a whole lot of absolutely useless stuff that no-one ever uses. Who ACTUALLY uses the sidebar? Who actually uses it? Not me.

Another thing that I loathe Vista for: The slow startup. It seems OK, with the desktop icons all on the screen and the cursor showing the half-loading symbol, BUT IT'S LYING. Boot up ANY program, even Windows Explorer or Task Manager, and come back ~10 minutes later and it will only have just got over it's laggy problems.

Another complaint: Vista crashes RR more than XP. :P (That's my personal experience, and as it's meant as a joke don't go arguing about it)

...: The massive amount of 'Not Responding' windows you get. EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM, including explorer.exe and the Task Manager, has shown 'Not Responding' at least three times.

But XP doesn't do this. :S

(I ain't arguing :P )

So yeah, I like Windows XP.

Yes, I did read the date of the last post, but it's a survey.
