fun
Okay so you know that the game has cool levels right yes it dose but why even have them that size if you can only do a limited amount of exploring in them it's just sad for example just look as you can see that is the Path T power it is a 24x24 Levels/map Size but if you look only 1/7 or 1/8 is explore of that map but this is any ways what is the point of the limited exploring in the levels this is my guess maybe it is to keep the levels stable/balanced or DDI Interactive got lazy because a majority of the level is pure solid Rock. this is kind of like the topic What's The Point Of Impossible walls but different. Also i hope this topic is in the right place i have a good felling this is right if not then it can be moved.
Redacted
its to not waste your time and focus you on the mission , if you would have infinite freedom you could just finish the map in a couple of seconds to drill tru the solid rock. Phoenyx
I have to take a middle ground on this. If you could just drill through solid rock, then there's no point. However, there IS a ton of wasted space on several levels. Some players like to speed through games, others like to try for 100% completion. Back then, with limited resources, it was hard to do both AND keep up with modern technology. However, Rock Raiders does have a lot of stuff that was edited out in the release version. fun

LOL yeah there is ton of wasted space in a lot of levels thankfully Baz,s Mod makes it go by by for more exploring But sadly he still wastes a lot of it in 2 levels like the path to power & Air Raiders but hey that is what the map creator is for also the only levels that dose not waste hardly any is Back To Basics you can just about explore all of that one And DDI interactive should have used common sense for example the path to power should really be 15x13 at the most
Phoenyx
The Path to Power is probably that size to allow for easier navigation. I remember that a few of the larger levels were a bit tricky because I couldn't see certain walls.

McJobless
My assumption is that when DDI made its maps, it created an empty map which they wanted to be the maximum size, and then created the actual playable space to what they had created in their design documents. If DDI had Cyrem's map creator, they probably would have only made the maps as big as they were, but they didn't, so they had to guess. I think it's good that you only have limited space. It makes the play field more interesting, especially when you are trying to cram all the buildings into one cavern. It also makes the easier levels short, so you aren't wasting time when you don't have to. Also, it gives perspective to the bigger levels. You'll drill around the big ones, and suddenly feel like the area is massive. EDIT: Also, computers were slower, back in the day, so they probably wanted to keep CPU/RAM usage at its lowest for the older computers.
