News about Red Quark, and Bionicle The Legend of Mata Nui

Alright, so to make this day just that much weirder, I am apparently in direct contact with Red Quark now via YouTube. This is what he had to say via PM in regards to his previous plan to aquire the rights to TLoMN:

I have given up on acquiring Saffire's rights to LoMN (my no-longer secret plan), for the time being. If I were anywhere near Utah, I would arrange a meeting with Mark Kendell, the current holder of those rights. As it is, I'm not near him and it is too hard to communicate with him from afar.

Now I'm not starting this topic as a calling for an ambassador to RQ just YET as he has not yet replied to what I had to say back, but if he DOES agree, is there anyone here from that area that would arrange that meeting and speak for him?

UPDATE:

I'm not going to authorize anyone to speak on my behalf.

I am still interested though in buying out Saffire's stake in the "BIONICLE: Legend of Mata Nui" PC CD-ROM game, but I need to see the contract(s) between Saffire and LEGO Media (if possible -- copies are fine), and/or know exactly what I am getting should I purchase it, before I can even begin to guess at how much that stake is worth.

If Mr. Kendell finds that information and wants to contact me, he should already have my contact information. Otherwise, he can contact me here.

Even if he did buy Saffire's rights, what could he do with it? TLG has the ultimate say in what happens with the game. He'd have to rip out all LEGO trademarks and all traces of Bionicle if he wanted to distribute it, but there would be no point in that.

If nothing else, he'll gain a say in what happens to the game from that point onward, and may later be able to obtain the remaining rights to it OR get Lego's permission to redistribute the disk image to the public.

Keep in mind, Bionicle is a dead franchise, serving no further financial gain to the Lego corporation or its affiliates, and if the rights held by the sole party who stands to make a buck are obtained by us, Lego would probably not object to free distribution. After all, they've only said that THEY personally have no plans on completing it, not that WE can't if we somehow manage to obtain it.

I have not known a single product that TLG has decided to hand over rights for. From what I've heard TLG is very protective of their brand. Being how successful Bionicle was, I think that is even more reason for TLG to hold on to their property as they may want to re-introduce it again later on. With these two reasons, I think it leaves little chance of getting permission to release it, even for free.

But he can try, I expect buying Saffire's rights will cost a small fortune.

Well regardless of the methods used to obtain it, I'm not certain this is the place to discuss the legality of the situation. All that is set in stone is what Red Quark wishes to do and if nothing else, maybe he could buy the disk and... ahem.. "leak" the contents. Though personally I don't see him as the type to do something like that, what with already being open to buying the rights to the game himself, however it's not something to rule entirely out of the question.

Le put Source Code on USB Stick

Le loos USB Stick to Le homeless person

Le Homeless persons goes to internet Cafe and uploads to TPB.

;P

On a serious note, I'm just saying he'll need to convince TLG to sell and that I haven't heard of them doing that before... so it would be a first.

Seems legit. xP

In any case, I never got a message back after replying to the last update so I assume we're just back where we started. If nothing else, at least we know he hasn't entirely given up. It just... annoys me that the only thing separating an entire fanbase from the holy grail is the distance between two people.

At least now we have the name of the last known holder of a disk, for all that's worth without an exact location anyway..

What about paying Red Quark?

Paying him to do what exactly? o.O

Here is what we can pay him for in order of preference:

1. Somehow acquiring or buying the copyrights

2. Giving us his copy

3. Acquiring the game files

Wait. Greg's still going with the story?

I thought it kind of fizzled out a year ago. You know, just assuming. I didn't see any news updates on BZPower about it, so I thought the story ended like most LEGO themes [*COUGHEXOFORCECOUGH*]: CLIFFHANGER.
