Time is dependent on change and if you just get rid of all movement in the universe, you get rid of time. Obviously not "simpler" but a lot more feasible. What I would do would move the moon or some huge object so that the gravitational pull pulls you upward towards it thus you fall upward from the earth. As 'se' generally makes the verb reflexive, so 'seleave' means 'Leave yourself', where 'yourself' is an adverb instead of a noun. The velocity of the timer should be enough for g-force to push the sand from the bottom of the timer to the top as it plummets towards Earth.
