The results for the LEGO CUUSOO summer review are in. For those who don't know, LEGO CUUSOO is a website where LEGO fans can submit concepts for future exclusive LEGO sets, or submit other concepts. If a concept gets 10,000 supporters, LEGO reviews it and decides whether or not to produce it as a real set.

So far, three sets have passed review and been produced, including the hugely popular set 21102 Minecraft Micro World. And today, the fates of four more set concepts have been revealed:

Modular Western Town: Failed due to conflicts with The Lone Ranger. Expected, but still disappointing.
The Legend of Zelda: Failed due to the high costs of creating so many new LEGO elements for the minifigures.
EVE Online Ships - Rifter: Failed due to not meeting business case requirements.
Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine: Passed! LEGO has secured a license with Universal for this product, and the final model will be ready by mid-2013 and sold as set 21103 Back to the Future Time Machine. In addition, the person who created the concept model and posted it on LEGO CUUSOO, Masashi Togami, will be donating the 1% royalties he receives to the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

For a preview of the new set and more information on the review process, check out the official LEGO CUUSOO blog and video below.

Pretty disappointed with this, to be honest. I would have been more interested in the Modular Western Town than either Back to the Future or The Lone Ranger.

LEGO and their licenses....

It's kind of pathetic that the only concept that wasn't a derivative of some other property was shot down because of a liscense? Are people so afraid of voting for something new and exciting over the familiar but boring? What's an elbow, red car blue car, etc. :nubby:

Failed due to conflicts with The Lone Ranger. Expected, but still disappointing.

Couldn't they have passed it and just held it back a few years until the garbage crap licensed theme ends instead of saying no and forcing it to completely restart later?

Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine: Passed!

LEGO is obviously full of crap when they say there's too many custom parts to make for Zelda. They just don't wanna do it, I don't blame them.

I'm am most disappointed in LEGO's decision to fail the EVE Rifter, in fact... I'm angry.

Support from CCP + LEGO Liked it + Community liked it = Failed?. "Business case" does not explain the reasoning behind the decision.

As for their choice of the Time Machine, I will not be purchasing it. It's bland and lacks detail that it should have.

The western set fail was going to happen due to Lone Ranger.

Really, since Cuusoo projects are limited run and what you would call "special sets" there should not be any conflicts with "official" sets that get released everywhere... because these are not getting released in shops.

Once again, disappointed by LEGO.

The only things you could possibly be going by to say that are the original fan models (which in no way reflect the final design), or the preliminary model in the video, which is very clearly a prototype as indicated by the on-screen text and only briefly seen in a low resolution from one angle. I'll make the final decision once I see the final set, but as of right now I'm interested in purchasing it.

LEGO is obviously full of crap when they say there's too many custom parts to make for Zelda.

Did you even look at the project...? There's like 25 custom parts, not counting custom prints on existing parts, and impossible amounts of high detail. I don't think LEGO has ever revealed exactly how much a single mold can cost, but it's often upwards of $100,000 from what most sources say.

Also, from the official blog:

Please note: If a project does not pass the LEGO Review please do not interpret that as an indication that we will not consider similar projects in the future.

While this is true, I would not expect it to be too much different... (I get a feeling there will be stickers involved) They try to stay true to the original design. I liked the movies, but a LEGO set for it doesn't really interest me.

CUUSOOs are based on the user images? In that case, they kinda suck.

They're based on the concepts provided, not the specific images. This concept specifically called for a very high number of totally new pieces.

I guess that is understandable.

LEGO DeLorean.

great%20scott.png

I have been waiting for this moment for YEARS. And I personally don't care HOW crappy it is. It would be a helluva lot better than any MOC I would be able to make with the resources I've got.

That, and I don't think LEGO can get away with making the DeLorean TOO crappy. But on the other hand... The MINECRAFT set...

NO. TLG will NOT ruin one of the two iconic time machines of my childhood (the other being the TARDIS from Doctor Who). And if they do, I will PERSONALLY go back in time, using ONE POINT TWENTY-ONE JIGGAWATTS of power, FORCE TLG to prevent this, and all will be well with the universe.

Next on my list: LEGO Doctor Who.

I agree with you up to Doctor Who...

Meh.

Next on my list: LEGO Doctor Who.
This wouldn't work due to the expansiveness of the show to the point that a lot of people would have no clue what things from the earlier doctors were, also there aren't a lot of things that can be used to create bigger sets due to low-budget background props.

I do not think it was LEGO who made this choice: It was Disney. Rio and I talked this over once, and we concluded it was Disney who did not want the CUUSOO set, no matter even if it is a limited run.

Why? Competition. Disney wants people to buy the LEGO Lone Ranger licensed theme, not something else. Since this Western CUUSOO set was too much like their movie and the toy line, they felt that it was too much of a threat to allow it on the market, and possibly take a cut in their movie profits. They told this to the CUUSOO moderation team and LEGO execs., convinced them of this fact, and basically forced LEGO to vote no, despite how popular it would have been.

Blame Disney.

LEGO CUUSOO staff members have said they can't even consider Doctor Who projects, another brand of toy building blocks (forgetting the name at the moment) already has the legalrights to it. :C
