About a month ago, we learned that the 3DS version of LEGO City: Undercover was actually a prequel to the Wii U game, with the tag line "The Chase Begins". And today, we finally get our first look at the 3DS entry in the series through the latest Nintendo Direct. The game's graphics and sound quality have obviously been toned down a lot (though the cutscenes are pre-rendered in the same style as the Wii U's real-time cutscenes), but the game does seem to retain the open world gameplay of the Wii U title.

Oh, and donut-obsessed cops. Deja vu.

That last scene was missing something... ah, yes, of course.

In terms of visuals, it doesn't seem to be that much of a step up, if a step up at all, from LEGO Lord of the Rings 3DS... and I personally find that disappointing.  When are they going to push the 3DS to its graphical limits?  I mean, Super Mario 3D Land looks nearly on-par with the Galaxy titles on the Wii - surely, they can do better!  This is especially annoying when you remember that the PSP ports of LEGO Star Wars II and LEGO Indiana Jones 1 were both nearly on the same level as the console versions... and then, starting with LEGO Indiana Jones 2, they actually took a step down from there.  And while the 3D is integrated perfectly into Super Mario and certainly adds an extra layer of depth to Ocarina of Time, it didn't really do much for me in LEGO LotR... especially since it actually would tax the framerate in some levels.

That, and I've already expressed my opinion on LEGO LotR 3DS... disappointing.  Of course, from this video alone, it's hard to tell if the major gameplay issues with LotR - the stiff controls and the long and frequent loading times - has been rectified, but just from looks alone, it looks like it'll be more or less on the same level as LotR.  That's a shame.
