Calcite Copter VS Cybernetic Rock Monster

Long after their famous mission to Planet U, the LEGO Rock Raiders have traveled to a jungle planet on the far side of the galaxy.  Beneath the planet's surface, they have discovered that the planet is rich in Brickonium Energy Crystals and other rare minerals.  However, much like Planet U, these underground caverns are home to beings of living rock and crystal.  But then, as the Rock Raiders stumble the ruins of an underground insectoid civilization, they uncover some dark secrets of the past... including one of the insectoids' "little" experiments.

Calcite Copter

The Rock Raiders Calcite Copter is a one-man aircraft designed for quick travel in underground caverns.  Its sleek design lets it cut through the air with ease during flight, while its propeller, stabilized by means of advanced Rock Raider technology, gives it full vertical access to descend into the deepest underground trenches.  The Calcite Copter also has a mounted mining laser turret that, when powered up with blue Brickonium, can cut through even hard rock with ease, although it expends much of the crystal's energy in doing so.  Although designed for speed and maneuverability, the Calcite Copter is not particularly well-armored, and Jet was in for a horrific surprise when she stumbled upon this cybernetic rock monster!

Cybernetic Rock Monster

There is no name for this monstrosity, although some of the Rock Raiders have taken to referring to it by the nickname "Mad Jack".  This ancient creature was once made of living rock and crystal, much like most of the rock monsters throughout the LEGO Universe.  However, it was cybernetically enhanced by a civilization long since ruined, which replaced entire parts of its rock body with incredible machinery powered by a powerful energy crystal implanted into its chest.  Now, this terror roams the underground caverns of the planet, posing a nightmare to anyone unfortunate to meet its rock claws and steel teeth.

This was a project I was working on since late 2010.  The idea for the cybernetic rock monster was loosely inspired by Mad Jack from Donkey Kong 64Here's concept artwork, along with some artist's comments.  If you want to see 360o rotations of the models and some of the ways they can be moved, here's a video showcasing the models.

Comments and constructive criticism are welcome!

And this, friends, is what nightmares are made of.

Seriously, good work, and a unique idea, glad to see you finally post it here. Cool detail with the voltstone in the chest.

Y'know, I just realized that this might have subconsciously inspired the general form and idea of the final boss of my RPG project, the Astrogolem... Which is an ancient statue brought to life by means of futuristic technology, with a look and feel not unlike this model here (though as it's a statue it's less greebled and more clean-cut). And it fires elemental blasts from its hands (fire and ice), and has blasters for eyes (which completes this trope). Hm...

Beautiful models there. I like the more futuristic Calcite Copter, in comparison to the more close-to-home vehicles in the Rock Raiders game.

Mad Jack is a great character too, I'd never considered large caverns with equally huge monsters, and I think you've pulled it off nicely. Out of curiosity, is that a singular leg that it hops on?

My only criticism is that the technic elements on the Calcite Copter don't quite work for me, but that's just personal taste as I'm used to Technic sets being separate from standard LEGO brick ones.

Very nice models, I like the cybernetic rock monster the best, and the copter is also awesome!

Thank you for all the much-appreciated comments!

I do wonder, though, how does it move? It looks stationary to me.

jamesster has the right idea. As I discussed in the artist's comments for one of the concept art sketches, in which I was struggling to figure out how to design the monster's leg(s), the concept I ultimately went with was a single leg with a large foot with which it could hop around. The main source of inspiration for that design was actually the Red Planet Cruiser from LEGO Life on Mars, though I do suppose that Mad Jack hopping around in his box certainly helped push me in that mental direction.

In hindsight, it does sound rather silly to picture such a scary monstrosity hopping around on one foot... but, if that thing were coming towards me with those claws and those teeth, I'd run the other way regardless of whether or not it was hopping on one foot.

That set was, like, my favorite set ever when I was just getting into LEGO. Altair was my favorite LoM character, and I spent ages just flying and bouncing that thing all over the place. Heck, I even bought two of 'em because I liked it so much. Thanks for the nostalgia. :D

Well, when you put it that way...

I guess a scary monster that can tear you to pieces is only more terrifying if it defies your expectations. ;P

This... doesn't look like Rock raiders to me. It looks like a completely new theme (since 1) the Rock monster is a fake and 2) the thing Jet is piloting dosn't have anything to do with mining).

It has everything to do with mining. And may I also point out these official vehicles, which actually have less to do with "mining" than this model?

And you said nothing in regards to his actual building skill. What a heck of a post.

Actually you get wrong right there Jamesster. In the Hover Scout set I see an Energy Crystal, a radio, a pickaxe, some binoculars, and a chainsaw. In the Rapid Rider I see binoculars, an Energy Crystal and a chainsaw. In the small Lego sets (I am talking about the first one) there is a chainsaw.

The only proof you have against me is the helicopter thing (the small set which Docs is driving).

You listed a bunch of minifigure accessories. What do those have to do with the vehicles being discussed?

And again, you're spewing complete nonsense about "fake" Rock Monsters and a vehicle that supposedly "dosn't have anything to do with mining" (*doesn't), all while completely ignoring the hard work PeabodySam put into this model, the creativity behind it, and everything else good about it. You have provided absolutely no useful feedback of any kind, and yet again, only aggravated the community even more with your cruddy posts. You can't stand people giving you helpful and accurate feedback on your creations, yet you have the audacity to blindly bash somebody else's hard work with completely nonsensical points, then make even more nonsensical arguments when the lack of logic in your posting is pointed out? No. Just no. Good day sir.

The items involve mining (The RRs are looking for ECs. They use Pickaxes and chainsaws to mine).

Yes they do. And I ask again, what do they have to do with the vehicles we are talking about? :| Your original post here specifically discussed the vehicle PeabodySam constructed, which you claimed had nothing to do with mining and therefore did not belong in the Rock Raiders theme (seeing as the first post in this topic gives it a detailed breakdown of how it mines with its laser, that's also complete nonsense - did you even read the topic before replying?):

the thing Jet is piloting dosn't have anything to do with mining

I posted official Rock Raiders vehicles that, unlike PeabodySam's custom vehicle, don't even have any mining-specific abilities (the hover scout just flies around, the rapid rider is basically just a cargo catamaran, and the two promotional sets are more variants on hover vehicles)... And now you're completely ignoring the vehicles and trying to talk about minifigure accessories? Sir, you are making absolutely no sense.

Yet again, you've completely ignored everything said in reply to you and only spewed the exact same irrelevant nonsense from your previous post. This is getting quite ridiculous. Do you not have anything useful to say here?

Edit: Oh, silly me, I forgot the Tunnel Transport and the other hover vehicle included in the same set! They're just flying vehicles (the Tunnel Transport can carry vehicles and such, the other is just a small one-man craft), both without any mining-specific functions, so shouldn't you be directing your disgust to things like them instead of PeabodySam's vehicle, which actually does have the ability to cut through rock and such? Why would it even be a problem in the first place?

jamesster has already said much more than he ever needed to say to defend the Calcite Copter.  And I must say, thank you for that.

But you know, while I'm here, I might as well also point out that the Calcite Copter is basically a flying Mobile Laser Cutter.  Take a look at the Small and Large Mobile Laser Cutters, both of which are official Rock Raiders vehicles that are centered around mining.  They don't have any minifigure accessories like pickaxes and shovels slapped on them just to shoehorn them into the Rock Raiders franchise.  They're just vehicles with mounted mining lasers.  And that definition is literally exactly what the Calcite Copter is: a vehicle with a mounted mining laser.

Add in the Tunnel Scout's ability to fly, and you have a Rock Raiders vehicle that has all the mining capabilities of the Mobile Laser Cutters but is far more versatile in traveling through caverns; no longer restricted to cavern floor, but now able to fly over lava, water, and even crevices.  Why wouldn't the Rock Raiders want a vehicle like this?

Ignoring the fact that the Mobile Laser Cutters are completely useless in the PC game...

Can you even really call it defending when the argument attacking it has absolutely no logic behind it? :S

And from what I've seen, mining lasers are actually quite useful in the PS1 games.

Hence why I specified the PC game.

Although... to be fair, I thought about what Ben24x7 said, and I have come the conclusion that he's right.  The Calcite Copter is simply not a Rock Raiders vehicle.  Despite the existence of the Hover Scout, Rapid Rider, Helicopter Transport, Tunnel Transport, Small Transport Truck, Cargo Carrier, and many other Rock Raiders vehicles, the Calcite Copter is severely inhibited by its lack of necessary Rock Raider tools such as drills, shovels, pickaxes, and chainsaws.  Therefore, I have decided to take Ben24x7's ever-so-constructive criticism to heart and modified the Calcite Copter.  Now... it is a true Rock Raiders vehicle.

Although, if you ask me, it still needs more drills.

No, no more drills. That has too many tools as it is.

Tracker, please don't quote huge images.

There's really nothing to say here that hasn't been said already, and I don't want to get involved in the little war. So I'll just say I like it. The copter is very nice despite what someone says, and the monster is well-made. Though... what was the purpose of the experimenters creating it?

How about we all say 'It is fine they way it is'?

How about not? Someone or maybe even me may find fault in it and say so.

I mean I have nothing to say really but still.
