Lair
Which vehicle upgrades are actually useful, which are okay but not always needed, and which are utterly useless? Hopefully we can address all of them.
Car CrazeXVI
Hover Scout Scan + Speed: Although a good combination, I can not think of a level where this would be useful. Small Digger Scan: Somewhat wider scanning range is good for finding seams I guess. Speed + Drill: Good if you're in a hurry, (Lava Laughter is the only time I remember using this) but otherwise a waste. Plus, there's idleness syndrome to worry about. Small Transport Truck Carry: Very useful. Scan: Useful as it will scan walls when driving by, useless as most of the time you'll drill them first. Speed: Useful when gathering resources farther away, or if you're just in a hurry. Small Mobile Laser Cutter Drill: They never got around to fixing this. Loader Dozer Carry: Good on large levels, but can only carry crystals. Scan: This vehicle's job is clearing rubble from walls that were drilled hours ago. What's the point? Speed: Useful, but your Rock Raiders will still get to the rubble first, so put them in STTs. Granite Grinder Scan: I'm amazed they even manged to fit one on it to begin with. Speed: When upgraded, it's faster than the Chrome Crusher, although you could just upgrade the SD's drills and call it a day. Drill: Un-upgraded, it's still slightly faster than an upgraded SD. Really no point. Large Mobile Laser Cutter Scan: Depends on what you do with it. Drill: You might want to consider modifying it first. Chrome Crusher Scan: Why does the one it already have do nothing? Speed: With the speed of this vehicle, who wouldn't upgrade this? Drill: What's the point anymore? Cargo Carrier I'm just going to ignore upgrades on this vehicle for now, as I cannot see how it would possibly manage to get to the upgrade building... Ben24x7
Always (like I say) get a fully upgraded Transport Truck especially since it will snatch all ECs and Ore close by without dropping it unless instructed, A fully upgraded Chrome Crusher since it is faster to get to Hard rock, and (if you need Ore or you need to remove all the rubble in the area) a fully upgraded Granite Grinder. If you are doing a water mission always, repeat, always get a Cargo Carrier and if you need to mine overseas then a Small Digger too.

There isn't a vanilla level that requires you to do this. guys, make custom maps like this
Masiaf
What about a mod to make a navel upgrade station? Thus finding a way to upgrade the Rapid Rider and Cargo Carrier and any/or modded navel vehichles. Cirevam
That should work, even though I haven't tried it myself. The problem with aquatic vehicles is that there really isn't much for them to do. They can drill walls that are on the water's edge, like in Search 'N Rescue, but after that you have to get someone on land to clean up and collect. Boats can't pick up materials since units need to move directly on top of things in order to pick them up, so cargo upgrades are useless as they can carry a maximum of one material (whatever the pilot brings). Scanners are a bit useless as well since most hidden rock is going to be deep behind other rock, instead of being close to water. They might be useful on a level with lots of small islands. We can also upgrade landslide resistance and add lasers, but landslides typically don't happen on the water and lasers might not have much of a purpose without water-based monsters. I could imagine designing a level with walls that need to be lasered from the water in order for land units to access something, but it would be very situational. Thus finding a way to upgrade the Rapid Rider and Cargo Carrier and any/or modded navel vehichles. I don't know if you guys found out but according to the Rock raiders manual it says that the Rapid Rider is upgradable, though the Upgrade station cannot be placed beside water, and even if it did then still the Rapid Rider cannot be upgraded. alan
But even if you have read the maual you could know by looking into the CFG that no upgrade is listed for the Rapid Rider. And so even if you let him drive on land (CROSSLAND TRUE) there aren't any upgrades for it. You would have to create some on your own.
