Popular Post emily
Hello! Have you ever wished you could read old LEGO magazines? Probably not. But I sure love to put old LEGO magazines on the internet anyway! I recently received a small collection of LEGO Adventures!, Bricks n' Pieces and LEGO World Club Magazin issues courtesy of Cyrem and jamesster. Only two of them have been made available in English in their entirety online prior to now, so I am pleased to present what I have for your viewing pleasure. As with my LEGO MANIA Magazine scans, I will be uploading these frequently, but probably not daily. LEGO Adventures! Released between 1999 and 2002, Adventures! is probably the strangest LEGO magazine. Unlike any other known LEGO magazines, this publication was not created by the people managing LEGO in a particular region. Instead, it appears to have been formulated by LEGO Media, the company we know well for their games and not as well for their books. LEGO Media charged for the magazine, which would logically put it at a huge disadvantage, as it would ultimately end up competing with other LEGO magazines that were distributed free so long as you purchased a relatively inexpensive LEGO set. Regardless, the publication seemed to run unimpeded until early 2002, when every LEGO magazine was ended in favor of the aptly titled LEGO Magazine. One of the advantages of the magazine being published by LEGO Media is that it occasionally offered unique looks into the development of LEGO video games. In addition, the final visuals for the comics were produced by Artworld UK, known for their work on many of the cinematics in games from the LEGO Media era. I believe Artworld was also the provider for the CGI visuals in the books from LEGO Media. Later, in 2000, Artworld would also begin to produce comics for LEGO World Club magazine. They added MANIA Magazine to the list in 2001, at which point the comics gained a title, "Adventures in LEGO World." The title could have been called a pun if it had been put to use in World Club, as perhaps it was originally intended to be ([LEGO] Adventures[!] in LEGO World [Club]). (I am assuming that the pages of this magazine must be produced using unusually thin or non-dense paper. On some parts (especially pure white portions of pages), the page on the opposite side can be made out. I don't know that there is anything I can do to avoid this, but in general I do not think it is too distracting.) Issue 7 Pages of Note: Page 4 (What do the Rock Raiders do when they aren't stranded in orbit around Planet U? The same thing on other identical planets, apparently.) Page 19 (Dr. Kilroy is an excellent blimp pilot.) Page 22 (New names for Nick O'Tyme and Ariel. Johnny O'Dare seems to be a newly named character.) Page 30 (There are several screenshots and photographs from the production of Rock Raiders throughout this article, but I do not think any of them are new. It is nice to see all of the images in their original context, though. Amusingly, every time the article says an image is from the opening cinematic from the game, it is incorrect. Also note that it specifically says a screenshot is from the finished game, when the screenshot features scorpions and a spider.) Issue 8 Issue 9 Pages of Note: Page 4 (Newly named Insectoids, and Gypsy Moth gets an alternative name. Seeing as they had produced a LEGO Racers comic just a short while ago, I would assume that they had to be aware of what they were doing. So why was the name different?) Page 7 (I thought that this was a clever way of playing off of the Insectoids' nature as giant bugs in space.) Page 22 (Fay Fixit and Steve Spanner also star in Secret at Dolphin Bay, the DK young readers book.) Page 36 (In the 1980s and 90s, LEGO almost always produced at least one big diorama for every new theme, the images of which being then put to use in various catalogs. Although there were a few of these in 1997, they fell out of use and then largely disappeared in 1998. I believe this is the first time we have seen the full version of the Fright Knights diorama.) Issue 10 Pages of Note: Page 4 (This is the second place I have seen the LMS Explorer misnamed as the HMS Explorer (the other being at the end of High Adventure, Deep Underground). It lends credence to the already likely theory that the name is a pun on Her Majesty's Ship with 'LEGO'.) Page 22 (It looks like my/Google's translations of the Extreme Team characters' names from Homemade Magazine were fairly accurate. The red one, Daredevil Tom, is apparently male despite the fact that the character was Alexis, a female, in the US/MANIA Magazine.) Page 25 (It is more than a little worrisome that Jimmy thought they were actually stealing gold, and went along with it anyway...) Issue 11 Issue 15 Pages of Note: Page 1 (Cedric's eyes have been switched out from the usual dull grey ones, but instead of being changed to eyes with white sparkles, as is standard for the Artworld comics, he has white eyes with black pupils. Curiously, this is fixed in the comic, where he has the predictable grey eyes with white sparkles.) Page 4 (I was anticipating being able to get a good laugh out of seeing the inaccuracies in my/Google's of the Russian version of this and the other comic in the issue, but as it turns out the translations were fairly correct.) Issue 18 Pages of Note: Page 18 (It is somewhat interesting that they decided to deem this a Racers themed feature, but instead of using art from the video game used different racing-related things from the City Center theme.) Page 22 (Apparently the Brickolinis are a family of pizza makers, seeing as this is the fourth one to have the same profession.) Page 35 (This is extremely confusing, and implies that the relationship between Adventures! and the other LEGO magazines may have been more logical than it would appear. After all, what can Adventures! have had to fear from Bricks n' Pieces World Club Magazine if it advertized the other magazine within it's own pages? On another note, despite what this page says there is no amazing, action-packed underground adventure in the next issue.) (Unfortunately, due to the bulk of the stationery set, a sizable portion of the pages are darkened in the corner.) Pages of Note: Page 2(this issue is cut short four pages, and as a result the usual layout is rearranged. The first comic starts right on the second page. Sneaky Smith is a new character. Johnny Thunder and Doctor Kilroy are in the crowd watching the game.) Page 4(Because you can obviously get away with only temporarily kidnapping someone with absolutely no repercussions.) Page 20(Police Chief Brick is always trying to steal money and make a quick getaway.) Page 23(The wheels on Bill's trike have incredible traction.) Page 28(A bit more on the LEGO Creation Centre / Rocker Racers at LEGOLAND Windsor.) LEGO Bricks 'n' Pieces In 1974, the folks managing LEGO in the UK began distributing a newsletter called Bricks and Pieces to LEGO fans around the country. After only sporadically releasing issues over the course of three years, they appeared to bring the newsletter to an end. This wasn't entirely the case, however. In 1979 the LEGO Club UK was born, and with it came a revitalized Bricks 'n Pieces (later to be slightly altered to "Bricks 'n' Pieces"). Originally keeping to its roots as a newsletter, in 1983 the publication expanded into a full magazine. From then, it continued on for another fifteen years until it was entirely replaced by the LEGO World Club and LEGO World Club Magazine. Due to the magazine's extremely long duration (very likely the longest lasting LEGO publication), it is an interesting study in the evolution of the LEGO Group and of its advertising techniques. Pages of interest: Page 1(Can you spy the slightly hidden minifigures from a line that was to premiere in the next year?) Page 5(I love how most every review can be summarized, "It was really big and amazing, but super hard to build so I had to ask for help!" Quite realistic, really, but I don't think that LEGO would be eager to share such a review in the current Club Magazine - understandably, they wouldn't want kids to think about frustration over a model's difficulty.) Page 16(Note the "Robo Blockbuster" Roboforce set at the bottom, which appears to be the Robo Raptor (although they are showing what I assume to be the back of the box.) LEGO World Club Magazine Originally launched in Germany, this magazine featured at least some content taken from Klick, the Austrian LEGO magazine of the time. In a few years, this magazine would expand it's title to what seemed to be everywhere else a LEGO Club existed, save for the US/Canada where MANIA Magazine was kept. Despite the matching titles, however, it seems likely that not all of the magazines had the same content. Issue 14 TEXT IN ROUGHLY LEFT TO RIGHT, DESCENDING ORDER Page 1 July/August 1999 LEGO WORLD CLUB Magazine Wind Craft Ready for the new STAR WARS? WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM STAR WARS EPISODE I: MEET US IN THE NEW LEGOLAND CALIFORNIA PARK New! LEGO TECHNIC DESIGNER CAR Tim and the Monnnster! Page 2 LEGO WORLD CLUB: STAR WARS ALL NEW STAR WARS EPISODE I THE SAGA BEGINS Many years before Luke Skywalker duels Darth Vader, the greedy Trade Federation tries to take over the planet Naboo. On Tatooine, a brave boy named Anakin Skywalker helps the Jedi save Queen Amidala and her planet. Race along with Anakin as he takes part in an action-packed Podrace. Then join the Jedi in a showdown with the dangerous Darth Maul. ANAKIN SKYWALKER Anakin Skywalker is a nine-year-old slave on the desert planet of Tatooine. Anakin first meets Qui-Gon Jinn when Queen Amidala’s spacecraft lands for repairs on Tatooine. He becomes fast friends with R2-D2, Padme and Jar Jar Binks. Anakin possesses a maturity beyond his years, and is always eager to help those in need. Though he appears to be a normal boy, Anakin is very special and gifted. He is very strong with the Force, but does not yet know his potential. Owned by a junk dealer, Anakin is never far from a set of tools, and has secretly built a custom Podracer. With his natural reflexes and an eye for excitement, Anakin is the only human in Mos Espa capable of flying a Podracer. In this combination of caring boy and untapped talent, lie possibilities that stretch far beyond the limits of slavery. QUI-GON JINN Qui-Gon Jinn is a noble, wise, and powerful Jedi Master. He relates to all living things, even if it often leads him to follow his own path. Qui-Gon shares his knowledge with his headstrong apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The two Jedi are sent to free Naboo from the clutches of the evil Trade Federation. OBI-WAN KENOBI Obi-Wan Kenobi is the apprentice of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Together the two Jedi are a powerful force to be reckoned with. Obi-Wan greatly admires Qui-Gon, but is often frustrated with the decisions he makes; including Qui-Gon’s tendency to take other lifeforms under his wing. Obi-Wan has almost completed his training, and shows the makings of a great Jedi Knight. PADME NABERRIE Padme serves Queen Amidala as one of her trusted handmaidens. Padme loyally tends to the queen and serves at her side. After landing on Tatooine, Padme accompanies Qui-Gon Jinn to Mos Espa in search of a part for their stranded ship. In Mos Espa, she meets Anakin Skywalker and comes to care for the boy over the course of their adventures. Strong willed and determined, Padme is a key figure in the quest to save Naboo. JAR JAR BINKS Jar Jar is from a group of amphibious beings called Gungans that live in the vast underwater city on Otoh Gunga. However, Jar Jar has been banished from his home. Jar Jar is kind and helpful, but also very clumsy. He often stumbles into danger, but sometimes this works to his advantage. Jar Jar’s honesty and knowledge of his homeworld come in handy when he is saved by Qui-Gon Jinn during the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo. DARTH MAUL Darth Maul is a Sith Lord and the loyal apprentice of Darth Sidious. Filled with the evil of the dark side, and armed with a double-bladed light saber, Darth Maul can duel two opponents at one time. With horns, tattoos, and yellow eyes, Darth Maul presents a terrifying appearance. In a spectacular showdown, lightsabers clash as Darth Maul battles Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. [Pages 2-4 seem to have been literally copied and pasted from LEGO MANIA Magazine. The Mos Espa Podrace feature on pages 6-7 is a little different, the review by Jake Lloyd is replaced with a general description of the set.] Page 3 LEGO WORLD CLUB: STAR WARS 7141 NABOO FIGHTER High above the planet Naboo, the sleek Naboo fighter sets out in an attempt to destroy the Trade Federation’s droid control ship. COCKPIT OPENS AND CLOSES. 7161 GUNGAN SUB Jar Jar Binks guides Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi through the underwater world on Naboo. For their journey to the city of Theed, they borrow a Gungan sub. Will Jar Jar and the Jedi become a snack for a sea creature, or will the sub’s spinning propeller speed them out of danger? SUB SEPERATES INTO THREE SMALLER UNDERWATER VEHICLES. THREE COCKPITS OPEN AND CLOSE. 7121 NABOO SWAMP The Naboo swamps are filled with strange creatures, including Jar Jar Binks. Will Jar Jar lead Qui-Gon safely out of the slimy swamp? LOOK OUT FOR BATTLE DROIDS ON STAPS! Page 4 LEGO WORLD CLUB: STAR WARS 7101 LIGHTSABER DUEL Racing in on his Sith speeder, Darth Maul confronts Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. The wings on the droid fighter quickly change from cruising position to attack mode. WITH ITS WINGS OPEN AND A TURN OF ITS HEAD, A DROID FIGHTER CHANGES INTO A WALKING DROID. 7131 ANAKIN’S PODRACER Anakin Skywalker loves to build, and he makes his own Podracer. Anakin receives great support from the crowd. Qui-Gon Jinn, Jar Jar Binks, R2-D2 and Padme Naberrie are all here for the exciting Podrace. LEGO STAR WARS EPISODE I Page 8 LEGO WORLD CLUB: LEGOLAND WE GOT OUR OWN LICENSE IN LEGOLAND CALIFORNIA David and Sam got a chance to visit the new LEGOLAND a week before the opening. And it was just great! This is what they reported: The best thing of all was probably the Driving School, where each of us was able to drive our own car and take the driving test. We also drove a few amazing cars up at the Sky Ride. You have to pedal if you want to move forward. And if you lie down, wow, you should probably hit the brakes! Here we are in the lift in the Tower. You must pull yourself bit by bit up the rope. It was quite exhausting! You can also go on a Safari tour. All the animals are built of LEGO bricks, and they even make real scary noises! Page 9 LEGO WORLD CLUB: LEGOLAND In LEGO Village you can expect the biggest water fights. You shoot this huge water gun, and if you land a hit, the crocodile opens its mouth. If you jump on the correct spots at the Water-Symphony-Orchestra, fountains come from the instruments, and they play a tune! We were just walking across the square, when suddenly water was everywhere around us! The boy who was standing right next to us was Soaking Wet! If you’re wet, they have this Huge Dryer there, for when you are ready to dry yourself. Man, that blows your way through! Page 10 LEGO WORLD CLUB: LEGOLAND We saw a crazy clown and acrobat show at Fun Town. These firemen learn how to put out fires. There are a lot of things from America recreated in the park, by hand! It took them 30 million LEGO bricks to build the business district of Manhattan! Look at these cool models of San Francisco… …And Hollywood, where all the film stars live! Page 11 LEGO WORLD CLUB: LEGOLAND And also of St. Louis. The great river steamer sets straight off from there, and there is even a replica of the Everglades with alligators that suddenly appear out of the water. If you’re a LEGO TECHNIC freak, you can go to the Imagination Center and build your own stunning models… Here sail all the LEGO ships, loading and unloading, and the trains and trucks drive around. You can also try to put out a fire on a ship. COOL! Or you can try out the new LEGO Mindstorms. You start this with building a robot, and then you program it the best you can. Last, you can compete to see whose robot is best. If it does terribly, there is only one answer: reprogram! But one of the ninjas, too, is not fully rested! They must start the retreat without the treasure. The Ninja Emperor and White Dragon woman are angry. [i thought this was a really innovative way of using the official images for the Ninja sets and alternate models. New names for the Evil Emperor and the Ninja Princess, kinda. In this continuity, they are allied. Anyone want to try their hand at filling in the blanks in the comic?] Page 21 LEGO WORLD CLUB: NINJA The Ninja Shogun fires his ninjas. There are 12 different tracks and cool 3-D graphics!!! Race against Captain Redbeard in the pirate world. But there are rolling obstacles, streams of lava, sharp curves and many other dangers! Luckily you can collect power-ups and take shortcuts, to more quickly reach the finish line. At the end you will meet the absolute LEGO World racing champion, Rocket Racer!!! [if the first two screenshots aren't new, then I guess they are new to me. When they called the captain Redbeard, I immediately thought that for this ad they must be using the names used in the game for all the characters, as usually he was known as Captain Roger in Germany. Then they mentioned Sam Grant. They also identified everyone but Redbeard as belonging to a theme they do not actually belong to.] Page 23 LEGO WORLD CLUB: LEGOLAND BUILD YOUR OWN VIRTUAL LEGOLAND!! Build it using elements from Western, Pirates, Adventure, and Castle. And the 3-D graphics are mega cool! Before you begin, you choose between the Free Play Mode and the Game Mode. Most visitors are crazy about them. “And if you have problems, I am always ready to help you!†[More new early screenshots? And apparently the "little friend and helper" was originally going to have a role in the game beyond appearing on the cover?] Page 24 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK WIND IS EASY TO USE FOR TAKING OFF! Get your LEGO bricks and build something with which you can fly on the wind! Imagine that you’re flying in a hot air balloon – high up, far away! Or go with a paraglider floating at your back! Page 25 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK Or how about ride in a zeppelin? Or glide with a kite flying through the air… Page 26 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY ZONE How can a Glider Fly? Have you ever seen a glider? It flies without any power source! People who have tried gliding think it is the COOLEST experience in the world. You feel free as a bird – and you fly in absolute silence, without the hiss that a plane makes while flying through the air. If you want to know a lot about the wind, weather and clouds then you know you want to fly a glider! To start a glider, it has to be pulled into the air, almost like a kite. Or you can drag yourself up in the air with an airplane with an engine. But that makes a lot more noise and causes more emissions. Page 27 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY ZONE You want to be pulled as high as possible before dropping the line. The higher you start, the longer you fly. To gain speed, the pilot pushes the nose down a bit. But that also means a loss of height. As such, the pilot looks for thermals – rising currents of warm air – to rise higher. They are called “bubbles†(bubbles) [here the quoted word was originally in English, while the word in parenthesis was the German equivalent]. The best bubbles are seen on hot summer days. If the pilot thinks he is high enough, he slips out of the bubble, back to his planned course. If he wants to land, he aims the nose down. But not too fast, or the glider picks up too much speed and the brakes must be applied. Then the glider is off balance and could even crash! FACT: Glider pilots need a special pilot license. There is MUCH training needed. You must boast hundreds of hours of flight time with an instructor before you are allowed to just take the test! Page 28 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK REMARKABLE CREATURES!!! Fastest Bird in the Country When necessary, the ostrich can reach a top speed of 65 km/h! Page 29 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK Widest Wingspan The Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) has the largest wingspan of all living birds. One was once measured 11’11†– that is about 370 cm – or twice as big as your mama! It wanders over the southern oceans, only coming ashore to breed. Highest Kangaroo Leap A captive kangaroo was observed jumping over a 6 foot high fence (that’s 180 cm to you) when a car had a misfire. And a red kangaroo jumped over a 3 meter tall pile of wood when it was hurt! WILD LEGO TECHNIC MISSION!!! Merry Christmas and a happy YEAR 2000! The LOOONGEST Railway Line in the World! Build an Anti-Monster Robot! Watch Out for Meteors! Building Ideas! There is a Thief on the Train! Page 2 LEGO WORLD CLUB: TRAINS YIPPIEE!! We are on the longest train route in the world Have you ever ridden on a train? Many people have – but have they done so for 8 days, traveling from one end of the world to another? For over 9,000 kilometers? With their own sleeping compartment and a great dining car? On an absolutely fantastic route through forests, swamps, mountains, and vast regions of eternal snow that have remained unchanged for centuries? The Trans-Siberian Railway is the longest and most famous line in the world. It crosses the largest country in the world – Russia – on a route from Moscow to Vladivostok. It took 25 years to build, and during some periods more than 100,000 people worked on it simultaneously! WOW – a train with 20 cars makes 110 kilometers per hour on this bumpy track? I hope we don’t derail! Look – roofs of gold just like in a fairy tale! Moscow is a beautiful city full of domes and turrets! The central station, Yaroslavl Station, is a busy place. Luckily, there is a dining car, because there are up to 600 kilometers between stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway! Just look at this bridge! It crosses the Volga – the longest river in Europe, at 3685 kilometers! No, they have not turned the font upside-down. Russian is just very different from our language, and the alphabet is quite different. Page 3 LEGO WORLD CLUB: TRAINS So, this is Siberia. It is as cold as you can possible imagine – sometimes the temperature falls to 50 degrees Celsius below zero. Therefore, very few people live in this large area. We arrived in Ulan-Ude, 5,647 kilometers from Moscow. The new passengers look different. This is because we are now in Asia, not far from Mongolia and China. Lake Baikal is the oldest lake in the world – over 25 million years old – and the deepest – 1,637 meters deep. “Want to come in and see my compartment?†We have reached Tarskaya. Some of the cars are uncouples here; they go with the Chinese passengers on to China. Hurrah! Vladivostok! We finished the longest train ride in the world: 9,297 kilometers in 8 days. Shall we take the next train home? Page 4 LEGO WORLD CLUB: TRAINS HOP ON THE STRONGEST AND FASTEST TRAINS IN THE WORLD!! The Santa Fe uses some of the most powerful locomotives in the world. And no wonder – because its freight trains are 2 kilometers long and travel across the entire USA! There are 85 cars that must be loaded prior to departure! But that is no problem with such a heavy-duty crane. In the winter, a special snow plow grants free movement to the Santa Fe. For the freight train must reach its destination – no matter the weather! This freight train transports coal, meat, grain, oil, fruit, cars of all models and types, bicycles, cement, and various types of fuels hundreds of miles all the way from Chicago to California! Page 5 LEGO WORLD CLUB: TRAINS One of the fastest passenger trains in the world carries the name TGV Atlantique. It rushes through France at 300 km/hr! The TGV is electric and runs on a specially built track. Its braking and signaling system is computer controlled. But just to be absolutely safe, there are always repair and service cars on the road to check the signal poles on the track! The TGV train can carry 500 passengers, and it’s cool to ride on. You can eat, watch movies, make phone calls, and play on your computer while the train rushes from Paris to Bordeaux. A ticket for a ride on the TGV is extremely expensive. On the other hand, you are riding on a train that is cleaned before each departure until you can see your reflection on it. The next time you’re in a train station, hold out for the Santa-Fe freight train or the TGV. It would be pretty cool to see them in real life, wouldn’t it? Page 6 LEGO WORLD CLUB: IDEAS Construction Presents for CHRISTMAS! Christmas gifts are usually expensive. So why not make your own gifts? For mom and dad, sister and brother – or for friends? If you can spare a few LEGO bricks, that is… A cup for biscuits A napkin ring – or two… A hanger for your leash [This looks familiar...] Page 7 LEGO WORLD CLUB: IDEAS A vase for decorations A little box for this and that A holder Christmas cards A box for jewelry Stands for knives and forks, etc. Page 8 LEGO WORLD CLUB: SPACE PORT TAKE CARE DURING THE METEOR ATTACK!!! Where did that meteor come from all of a sudden?†Fortunately, the astronaut escaped unharmed. He quickly sent a warning to the Space Center on Earth. The space shuttle is ready for use! “You can all count on me, I will use the gripper arm on the space shuttle to stop the meteor in its path!†…5… 4… 3… 2… 1… LAUNCHING!! Page 9 LEGO WORLD CLUB: SPACE PORT The meteor will collide with the earth in a few minutes… …But fortunately, the space shuttle is very close. “Wow! It almost hit me!†The astronaut heads after the meteor and makes the gripper arm ready for action. “You cannot escape me, you ugly little lump of space rock!†The meteor is captured, and the astronaut heads to the Space Center. “No meteor will hit the earth as long as I’m an astronaut.†Page 10 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ROCK RAIDERS HELP! THE ROCK MONSTER IS COMING!!! You can find the courageous Rock Raiders deep, deep under the earth. They never stop working! Today they are carrying a load of precious crystals back to headquarters. Suddenly, the stones begin to burst!! “The Rock Monster is blocking the exit!†“Bother! What now?!†But Axle acts quickly and hides behind the wheels of the Power Driller. [Axle has also disguised himself as Docs, to confuse the Rock Monster.] Page 11 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ROCK RAIDERS In no time he transforms his favorite vehicle into the strong Anti-Monster Robot. “Now things are unpleasant for you, Rock Monster!!†The Rock Monster cannot beat the robot and runs away. “Phew! Good thing our vehicles are quickly rebuilt! Both the VTOL Aircraft and the Power Driller are easy to transform into different types of vehicles. Welcome back to Technic City, Cybermaster fan! You’ll love our mission pack! There are a lot of great games and cool models to build. And you take part in the wildest missions!! LET’S GO STRAIGHT TO THE EMERGENCY CENTER! “My name is Commander. I am the director of the Emergency Center Control Pods. Talk to me if you might like a top secret mission with my best man!†“Just call me Jack, buddy! You and I should go on some important missions!†We should free our friends in the jungle… -rescue people and help them to find their way… -in the desert at night… -and pick up satellites and equipment at the North Pole. Page 23 LEGO WORLD CLUB: CYBERMASTER On the plane you can watch videos of other missions and test your flight skills in the C2 Simulator! You will learn how to defuse bombs and about all of the electronic operations! “I’m Joe, the mechanic. I’ll walk you through all of the electronics instructions.†I’ll help you make the C2 Aircraft ready for each mission. And you can build a hang glider, and many other cool machines! Also, you can help me to finish all of the constructions with which I’m not finished yet. “If you have guts, we also have three different games for you, buddy! And they are not for wimps!†Of course, you can play with all the models without turning on your computer. How would it be if you complete a mission using the bomb truck? It is packed with bombs, so you have to keep a clear head, so that the truck does not fly into pieces! Good luck on your next mission! Page 24 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY ZONE Be prepared for a hard winter! Build a helicopter that can take you over the highest mountains. You will not get along without it if you want to save injured people, because many places are accessible only by air. And there are some particularly dangerous ravines, where you have to fly on one side, or upside down! You’ll also need a snowplow to pave your way through deep snow. Otherwise, you remain stuck on the streets, which is not cool. Especially if an accident is announced and you need to speed there urgently. Page 25 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY ZONE Build yourself a rescue copter… Page 26 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK Are You Skiing this Winter? Build a difficult slope, so you can practice your turns! Oh, no! A broken leg! Ski holidays are dead boring in a wheelchair! Spring in your scooter and get going to warn skiers – when an avalanche is crashing down! Page 27 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK A skier has fallen. Use the stretcher to retrieve him! Page 28 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK Animals of the Icy Arctic Some animals love heat. Others can’t get enough of the cold. The North and South Poles are home to these creatures that seem to love the cold – see if you can build some of them! The polar bear is the largest animal of the North Pole. It weighs half a ton, but isn’t a clumsy guy: he can run at 20km/h over the ice. Mind you, he needs a reason to do that… such as the prospect of his next meal, or if he wants to go home to his boys. Seals are cute with their big, wet eyes and long whiskers. They swim fantastically fast, and they can talk to each other by emitting well-distinguishable sounds underwater. Page 29 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK The sled dog barks excitedly when a ride on the ice is imminent – because then he can use all his energy to do what he likes best: draw a sled loaded with hunters and supplies across hundreds of kilometers of ice and snow. Penguins are a funny sight when the waddle, taking as little steps as possible so that they do not tip over. Sometimes they use ice to slide into the water – and in the water they have a good time, because they are absolutely fabulous swimmers! The walrus is a giant weighing up to two tons. It snorts and yawns and loves to show off its long canines to keep other animals at a distance, so that it can doze lazily in the sun. Page 30 LEGO WORLD CLUB: ACTIVITY PACK Winners Woweee, now LEGO World Club has the fastest and largest LEGO sailboats! – We’ll win every race! The building was a lot of fun, especially in the summer! PeabodySam
Holy cow. Just like the design team behind the original LEGO Island, DDI built a physical version of the LMS Explorer bridge? I cannot help but wonder if that model is still intact somewhere at the LEGO HQ where it was build. Also, I'm not sure if we've ever seen that beta screenshot of the in-game red scorpions and large spider before. I'd also like to try my hand at recreating some of those inspiration models in LEGO Digital Designer, if I have the time of course.
Pranciblad
"How many differences can you spot on the Axle on the right?" Well for one that's Sparks and not Axle. That's an awfully big difference, isn't it? And showing Hover Scouts crossing lava? You're gonna have a lot of pissed kids when they try that one in the game and find out its a lie. Of course, that's not to say ere aren't a bunch of lies in the article about the game either. Sure, the game has all the Rock raiders in the cutscenes... But not in the actual game. Enjoy your generic raiders. The goal is to collect as many crystals as possible! Except that it's only reaching a predetermined amount of crystals, and even then only in some of the missions. Axle isn't racing that slug, they're both running from RUSHING LAVA THAT'S THREATENING TO KILL THEM. That said, the models they show you is kind of cool. The even smaller mobile laser cutter! The fabled large transport truck! A flying drill! The Town models they show you are great, too! I love that jetski, and especially the speedboat. And in the find the differences puzzle Octan dude loses to sunglasses to reveal HE HAS NO EYES HOLY BRICK. Lair
Arthuriel
Thanks for uploading all those pages, Tazakk Now we can look at all those pages, which are sometimes more and sometimes less interesting or funny. PS: The giant poster is only four pages big? How disappointing , at least it's free. Now I need some Fizz Cola and a sandwich to calm down... *looks at page 21* ...wait, I can't eat my own lego sandwich? Aaargh, how could you, TLC? emily
Thanks the responses, everyone! I've added Issue 9. At least in the case of the LMS Explorer Bridge, the model can probably be built by someone else, whereas the physical LEGO Island is lost forever. Still, it would be nice if the original bridge still existed, alongside the other models that the game-exclusive buildings and vehicles were based off of. It would be nice to have a piece of the past like that survive, and there may even be minute differences between the models and the versions in the game that aren't noticeable from the images we have. It is quite possible that the scorpion and spider image is new. I couldn't remember, and I knew that I had seen the image of the physical LMS Explorer bridge online at some point so I assumed that that image would have come up too. lol username
My goodness, as if LEGO Mania and Bricks 'n Pieces weren't enough, LEGO Adventures gives us a third set of character names for the Insectoids/Zotaxians... Also a third name for their planet I think. Interesting tidbit about the continuity between the DK books and magazines - were they both made by the same people? Whatever that division of DD was called? Karl White mentioned it but I forgot.

Lair
You're gonna have a lot of pissed kids when they try that one in the game and find out its a lie. If they were kids playing the PS1 game it would be the most hillarious thing ever, considering that you actually can cross water and lava even though it kills you. Also the Insectoids stuff really pisses me off. Stop giving alternate names.
emily
No! "LEGO" Friends! I don't see why you need to put quotes around "LEGO". I mean, there was a picture of a LEGO dolphin in one of the girl's rooms. Oh, that's right! While I do not have access to the Insectoids issue of Bricks n' Pieces, I had forgotten that there is a scan of the 1998 UK medium catalog on Peeron that gives the names that were probably used in the issue. Bizarrely, Webb's name is the same across the two sources, as is the name of the Insectoids'/Zotaxian's home planet, Armeron. But Wizer is called Zec, and Gypsy Moth/Navigator Sharp is called Insector 2, implying that she is subservient to Insector Leon. It would seem that both magazines were working off of the same source material, but that one or the other (likely Adventures!, as it wasn't as directly connected to LEGO) modified things for some reason. I'm pretty sure that at least the books in the young reader category published by LEGO Media/DK were produced by Artworld UK, which I believe was part of DDI. In addition to Fay and Steve, I recall that The Brickster appears once again as Jailbreak Joe with a white cap in Trouble at the Bridge. I only read the book a long time ago at the library, but I wouldn't be surprised if it included Builder Pete and his construction crew as well. I added a bit to the first post elaborating on Adventures! Magazine and Artworld, but you're probably already familiar with what information I gave. I looked at the post title...and wow. I was surprised. I was actually considering asking you if you could them but I didn't want to bother you. Thank you so very much! Will these be uploaded here? Should I continue following this thread or will they be uploaded somewhere else? Glad to be of service to you! I am uploading the magazines to Brickshelf (in this folder), but I will also be posting links to everything here. Since Brickshelf folders have to be moderated before they can be viewed on the site, I will be linking to the magazines here before they are visible over there. BobaFett2
There was a Brickster at Trouble at the Bridge (a book I once owned that has long since disappeared), as in the 2002 Issue 3/6 issue that was uploaded to BMP. The Easy Reader books also have the link between Space Port and Life on Mars, which I thought was really cool - BB is a kid who won a contest, the prize of which is a trip to Mars (after training as an astronaut at Space Port). ProfessorBrickkeeper
These scans are quite neat, scans of old LEGO magazines are definitely a valuable resource as to some of the info to older sets not chronicled elsewhere. It's also interesting to see a LEGO publication actually contain something relatively educational- the Rocks and Minerals page. I don't think the editors would let that pass anymore... It's also interesting to see a LEGO publication actually contain something relatively educational- the Rocks and Minerals page. I don't think the editors would let that pass anymore... It wasn't just the LEGO magazines that had educational information...the DK Easy Reader books I remember best (which are definitely somewhere in my house), a Rock Raiders one and a Space Port one, definitely have a few pages at the end about rocks/minerals and astronauts, respectively. I think I had an Arctic one too at one point, and that definitely had stuff about snow and arctic expeditions. It wasn't all that uncommon, at least in the Easy Reader books. However, I don't remember the puzzle books or the big comics (High Adventure, Deep Underground and the Knights' Kingdom One) having anything like that. And yeah, they don't do as much of that. It doesn't seem like they're publishing all those books any more either. I think that stuff was cut to save money (which, in the case of the puzzles and comics, is a real pity). Yeah, the info is great.

emily
Again, thank you for your replies, everyone! I didn't know that the Space Port book had BB training for his trip. Very interesting, given that that it was published the year before Life on Mars launched. Page 34, the RR mousepad and keychain, forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but does anyone have either of those? I don't know about the mousepad, but the keychain was a product on Shop at Home for a year or two, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone has it. The Brickset listing for it is here. Oh, that's right - Peeron had the alternate Insectoids names, Bricks n' Pieces had the alternate UFO names. Unless there actually is a Bricks n' Pieces magazine that has Insectoids content. Alternate sets of names are common in older LEGO stuff (often regional differences, different names between markets), but it's weird to see them mixed up like that. Huh. This issue appears to have featured Insectoids, but whether or not it gave any of the characters names is admittedly up in the air. Bricks n' Pieces also seemed to begin using names from LEGO MANIA Magazine at random times instead of their own in the later 1990s, so even if some of the characters are named in there, my theory that it uses the catalog names could be wrong and it could just be a reiteration of the Insectoids issue of MANIA. BobaFett2
They didn't specifically say "Life on Mars" but given the context and the identical characters I'd say it's pretty safe to assume that they're one and the same.
