tmo7452
For one of my classes a few semesters ago, I had to write a story of something interesting that happened to me. The story I wrote is relevent here, so I thought I would post it. The Double Surprise Birthday I had a few friends growing up; one of my best was Sam. Sam and I would often show each other video games that we had recently discovered. One time I was visiting him in 2002, he showed me a game called Lego Rock Raiders. After playing just one level, I fell in love with the game. I asked to borrow it, he said “Sure,†as he always did. The week went by quick, and I reluctantly returned the game. I had spent every spare moment playing it, but it wasn’t enough; I had to get a copy of Lego Rock Raiders for myself. My eleventh birthday was approaching, my best chance to get it. I repeatedly informed every member of my family about “The best game I have ever played!†and how much I wanted it. I knew my family understood why I kept bringing it up, and I asked for nothing else. I eagerly awaited the day I would be able to finish the game. My birthday finally arrived. And while my parents worked hard to make the day special, all I wanted was for evening to come so we could open the presents. After dinner, we gathered for gifts. There were three packages on the table: two small ones and one slightly larger one. I went for the small ones first, but neither were Lego Rock Raiders. There was one box left. A little big for a video game, but I didn’t care. I started tearing. As the “LEGO†logo in the corner of the box became visible, my mother started to speak: “We went to every store we could think of†she began, “we looked at all the games and asked the employees if they had Lego Rock Raiders. None of them had it. Eventually we found this and hoped it would be close enough.†I finished tearing off the wrapping paper to see the front: “Lego PC Game Collection†it read, “Includes five Lego games!†I quickly started scanning the box, looking at the list of included games. My brother noticed this, “I already looked.†he said. “Rock Raiders is not in there.†My mother followed up with “I’m sorry.†My brother was right, it wasn’t anywhere on the box. I was very disappointed, but not mad. I knew my family had put a lot of effort into searching, but that my only chance of getting the game. I couldn’t think of any other way. “There is one more thing,†my dad announced as held out an envelope. Something else? I opened the envelope, it was a card? No, it was a small printed book, six pages. I quickly read it. It was a story about me, on my eleventh birthday, this day. It had an account of everything that had happened, including the gifts. As I started reading about the little book I was holding, it said this was the best gift I’ve ever gotten. What could I want this much? I turned the page. There, in big letters: “You are flying to Colorado to see David!†David? Of course, my oldest best friend! I hadn’t seen him since he moved away 4 years earlier. My mom explained that my dad had to go on a business trip to Colorado the next week, and had planned out how I could come and stay with David the whole time. I was ecstatic, I had been missing David so much, and I had always wanted to go on a plane. This really was the best gift could have gotten. I had thought waiting for my birthday was hard enough, but the next six days were even worse. What would it be like above the clouds, traveling hundreds of miles per hour? The day finally arrived, and I packed up as much as I was allowed to carry. There was so much I wanted to show David, so much I wanted to do with him. The whole family went to the airport. I had been there many times before, I knew it well. For the first time though, I was able to board the plane. I managed to get the window seat, and then the plane took off. It was beautiful for the few minutes I could see out the window, too bad it was an evening flight. Then, on the little screen on the back of the seat in front of me, the new Spiderman movie started playing. I had seen it once before, but I was very happy to see it again. As the movie finished, the plane started to descend. We got off the plane, rented a car, and were at David’s house before I knew it. It was very late when I arrived; almost everyone was asleep, including David. I managed to fall asleep, and woke up the next morning to him calling my name. I jumped up and hugged him, then headed off to breakfast. David and I talked the whole time. We discussed things we did in the last few years, and things we wanted to do the weekend I was there. As breakfast finished he showed me around the house. They had lots of cool things I had not seen before. We finally arrived upstairs in the computer room. They multiple computers with lots of games, even some of the games I had started playing recently. I started to sift through the stacks of CDs when I spotted out of the corner of my eye, a disc with the well-known red square LEGO logo on it. I immediately grabbed it out from under the other discs on the table. There in my hands, it read: “Lego Rock Raiders.†I started jumping. David had it! Maybe I could find it at a store here? As he started to inquire about my sudden hyperactivity, I showed him the disc and started to recount the story leading up to my birthday the prior week. After I finished, he paused for a second, handed me back the game, and said “Well, happy birthday then! We got it for free and I never actually like the game anyway.†I quickly hugged him again. By flying me out to Colorado, my parents had given me exactly what I wanted for my birthday, and far more. Jimbob
