Personality Cores (8-bit Portal 2)

I just made this today... Took around eight minutes to complete:

Sorry it is small, I had to give it the 'pixelated feel' so it looked 8-bit (or something along those lines). And if anyone wants me to make a custom one for them then feel free to ask, also please ask me if you plan to use these 8-bit cores.

They're nice, you can tell what they're representing, good job . I think that lightening them up a bit (I thought the cores were white?) and having a highlight as well as the current shade would improve them a little.

Would this happen to be for a game or something?

Not at all.

@JimbobJeffers, If I were to make the cores white they would be impossible to tell apart from the white paper, I tried removing the white sheet but it removes bits of the cores it selves so sorry.

A few questions:

1) What program are you using?

2) Why can't you make them a bit lighter without making them pure white? They could be a much lighter grey for the mid-color and still be very visible?

3) By "paper" do you mean the white backdrop?

Jimbob, you said that it should have highlights, but I think it already does. The white curve at the top is supposed to be the reflection.

4) Is that correct?

5) When the eye is moved around the core, is that supposed to be that the whole core is turning or is the eye on a slider (or something like that)?

Based on your answers I may or may not have a solution for your background issue and a bit of advice.

1. I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, which is why I can't enlarge it otherwise it becomes circular.

2. Didn't realise that

3. Yes, I do

4. No

5. The eye is on a slider as can be seen on the original Personality Core model for the game.

I'll bet you money that you can keep the pixilation, you just need to change a setting. In GIMP, when scaling a layer if the interpolation is set to default (cubic) it blurs the edges to make a higher quality image. You can turn this off by choosing no interpolation. Obviously it won't be exactly the same in PE6, but it will definitely have the option somewhere.

1) What Limekiller said is completely accurate, but it may not be called interpolation since we don't know Photoshop well. That setting is sometimes called anti-aliasing or smoothing.

2) The main color should probably be around EFEFEF or a little bit brighter. The highlight could be white and the shadows a bit darker.

4) I mistook it for having a highlight in the upper left corner. It doesn't matter what side it is on, but you really should add at least a highlight to the core. It would greatly improve.

I look forward to seeing your improvements to this.

  • 2 weeks later...

Am I the only one who can't actually see them because they're tiny? And don't say "Oh just zoom in"...they should just automatically be high-res.

This. You can be 8bit AND High Resolution at the same time, look at Retro City Rampage and Lone Survivor
