Original OP:

I keep trying to come up with a creative alliterative name for this and for the life of me I can't.

It's a snowmobile.

It only functions in Ice biomes, but it goes, like, really really fast.

Can drill walls, at the same speed as the small digger.

Can be upgraded to go even faster.

I wanted it to carry cargo as well, but the bucket just was not fitting properly....but I'll get it to work sometime.

It looks very nice! What are those two big things on the back though? Two engines, or perhaps two containers? But what should those containers contain then?

Thanks :D

The two things on the back are supposed to be treads, or rather the casing around the tread where only the bottom of the tread is exposed. Since LDD does not have treads that small I had to improvise.

EDIT: Just checked Wikipedia, apparently snowmobiles only have one tread usually. Oops.

So what? Have two instead.

Since LDD does not have treads that small

Then make them bigger... BIGGAR... BIGGGGGAAAAAARRRR :P Extend them forward a bit.

I must admit, the back is really awkward and big. There seems to be a gap of s studs between the tread housers. Further examination shows this is not so, but looks really empty The cargo bucket would be a great thing to fill this with. It'd be fair easier to place it if you actually had treads and not bricks, because treads are lower.

Those two studs on the front... grr... they annoy me... merely by existing... grrr.... :P

When this is drilling you need some protection from small bits of flying rock. I know the Small Digger didn't have anything, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have anything too. Find some way to stop the control panels from being shattered by a small rock.

While we're on the subject of drills, that yellow 2x1 grill above the chainsaws doesn't really work. I say either put a connection to the extended treads there or put a 2x1 plate there. Probably in light grey.

Speaking of colour, the colours clash badly in this small model. I don't know how to put it, but it just looks really bad. Remove the black and cut down on the cyan a bit. Also make sure that dark grey actually has dark grey parts next to it, because there's not much of it and having it surrounded by light grey looks disgusting.

Also, when you've finished this you should get someone to model it. I can see it being really great... after my edits have been implemented. :P

Yep, I will try to put a bucket there. Fix er'thing.

What is it with you and exposed studs? I may or may not put something there, but having exposed studs is not bad.

I will consider this.

I noticed as well, even though it shares the same color scheme as other LRR models it just doesn't fit. Idk.

I agree, will probably go with flat grey panels.

Remove the black and cut down on the cyan a bit.

Remove the black? No. This has probably less black than any of my other models and Every Single Piece that is in black is a piece that should not be any other color (exception being that 2x3 plate on the front, I'll un-black that.)

As far as the turquoise goes, I actually tried to use more in this model than others to give it a sort of 'arctic' look to it. Going along with that I should maybe lighten a couple of the greys...

Also make sure that dark grey actually has dark grey parts next to it, because there's not much of it and having it surrounded by light grey looks disgusting.

...no. Trying to not use as much dark grey this time. Only DG parts are, like the black, parts that shouldn't not be DG.

Yeah I do wanna try and put this into the game. Either convince someone who knows how to make it for me or figure out how to do it myself.....

EDIT: Version 2.1 complete.

Can the cargo bucket tip?

And that front just looks awesome. Though when upgraded I think you should remove the 1x2 light grey plate there. The chainsaw just looks too high.

Why is there a control panel on the top of the chainsaws? The little light on the side looks good.

The colours on the tread housers clash. I think it's due to there being turquoise, yellow, light grey, dark grey, black, AND transparent green there. But I see what you mean about the bricks being those colours,

The jet needs to be moved back a bit and overall the tread houser is a little large. Lowering it one stud would work.

Yes.

that 1x2 grey plate is actually a 2x4 grey plate, goes back to the seat.

Why is there a control panel on the top of the chainsaws?

IDK, thought it looked better than untextured plates. No, it does not make sense....

Agreed. I changed the yellow grates to grey and it looks so much better.

I'll see what I can do about the jet engine, but as far as the housing as a whole goes it's just a very awkward construct and I wouldn't know where to begin in making it smaller.

Great design, Fushi, I could definitely see this buzzing around an arctic environment drilling walls and collecting Energy Crystals. I think you've nailed the colours, too.

As for constructive criticism... Looking at your second design, I think the addition of the chevron sign at the front actually detracts from its overall appearance. There's just too much going on in that little front part.

Snow Slider 1.2

kRTJ6fE.png

Slightly redid the front, adjusted the color scheme. I don't want to use much yellow, but being an RR vehicle, it has to have some yellow else it doesn't quite fit.

Meh, I don't like that flat 1x4 yellow brick on the front, I don't like it at all. I think the colors are a bit unbalanced, you put too much yellow on the front and pretty much nothing on the back. You can try reverting the back to what it looked like before, just change one of the two 2x1 flat yellow bricks with a grey one (for both sides). I really like that flat yellow panel with that decal, it looks awesome :D

I like the form of this vehicle. It's a little bulky but this is the theme featuring heavy drilling machinery, so it works. With minor tweaks it could be put in-game.

I will call this 1.3, however it's sort of, well, kind of a prototype I guess? I don't want to commit to this design but I want to see what you guys think.

DPEKr8E.png

Basically the biggest difference here is I made the front wider. i also took all that concentrated yellow at the front and dispersed it a bit as per suggestions.

That yellow 1x1 on the front just doesn't work. The colour doesn't fit (you have enough yellow there already), and it looks a little too blocky. The light idea is good, but it doesn't look good. I can't pinpoint why, however.

The widened front works well, however getting rid of that blank stud above the skis would be nice... I don't know why, but I have a brick prejudice against lone studs that serve no purpose.

I still think something needs to be done with the 'tread' design. They need to be lowered a bit, primarily because the cargo bucket on the back looks just too high for the overall low vehicle. The yellow thing down the bottom just looks out-of-place with the colour.

With lowering the back, I think:

  • Remove the small yellow stud and also the 1x2 with funny fiddly bit in turquoise. Also remove one of the grey 2x2x1 sloping bricks. I know that this would probably require changing the main frame of the snowmobile, but try it anyway.

  • Shorten the grey thing below it by 1 stud from the back.

  • Then place a couple of 1x2s in some form of grey to replace the 2x2x1 grey sloping brick.

It just looks too high up. If you could find some way to lower the cargo bucket then it'd work.

EDIT: Whoever actually said it had to have a cargo bucket? If you made a really small bucket, capable of carrying one crystal only and nothing else out of these then it'd be a small bucket and would use up the space nicely...

I know I'm contradicting myself with these ideas, but meh. Use them if you think they're totally awesome and should be in every single LRR set, and if you think they're totally useless and I should be punished for submitting such bad ideas, then don't use them.

Meh.

For the light I'd probably put a satellite dish ø16 in dark gray behind it, since most LRR vehicles have them.

(Interesting use of the letter Ø I must say  :P )

Managed to lower the tread housings by 1 plate height, the shape is nicer however it took a hit in stability.

The dish behind the light is good, I'm keeping it.

I had to redo the entire body practically to make the changes work, though.

I'm starting to like it, but I think the front looked better before, when it was 4 studs wide. Maybe it's because of the camera angle you chose. Can I haz different screens?

I think those four yellow studs on the back should be covered up by two 2x1 plates with no studs, personally.

Otherwise this has achieved a level of perfection. Good job.

P.S. Can these be carried by your trains?

I think the bucket can't tip if you put smooth plates there. It might look better aesthetically but functionality is good too.

I'm getting a hankering to model this and put it in LRR. It could be called the Snow Shredder.

Oh yes, that would probably happen. Other than that it looks totally fine!

Snow Shredder.

^exactly. I tried putting grates there but they hold the bucket in place so I removed them.

Go ahead. I'd love to see it in the game, but I don't know enough yet to be able to do it myself.

Couple questions about that:

1. Is it at all possible to make it so it can only be used in ice biomes? I have a feeling it can't, but if it can then do that :D

2. More realistically, can it be set to go really slower over rubble and power paths?

3. Will it have to replace one of the existing vehicles or can it be added separate?

EDIT: Also, here is the .LXF file if you need it.

EDIT Again: changed some things, see below.

It could be called the Snow Shredder.

I had been referring to it as the Snow Slider (suggested by JJ) but Shredder sounds a lot cooler, and more in line with the names of other vehicles of the theme. :D

P.S. Can these be carried by your trains?

Not at the moment, since i have yet to make a vehicle-carrying-car yet. However, since this is a 'small vehicle,' once I make said car, there is no reason why it should not fit.

BTW, I updated the Rail Runner several days ago and I don't think you ever saw the changes.

EDIT: JJ made a nice 360 view of the model, seen here. I will add this to the O{P when I get around to updating the OP.

EDIT Again: When shopping for parts on bricklink I realized I made some mistakes, here is the fixed Snow Shredder 1.4.1

rr3U56J.png

->Teal 2x3 plates now Dk. Grey

->Teal 1x1 clip now Black

->Round 2x2 plate now square

EDIT AGAIN AGAIN: Was not satisfied with this color scheme. Snow Shredder 1.4.2 Has a little less grey and a little more yellow, and a thing between the tread housings for increased stability.

j58lV0R.png

As of now, I am done with this model, completely. I am fully satisfied with it, and will not be revising it anymore. I am in the process of buying the parts off of Bricklink and will build this model IRL when they arrive.

1) Yes! You can add an invisible monster to the ice biomes and use that as a dependency for the vehicle. You can name it something like "Snowy Conditions" so you will see that a requirement of the Snow Shredder is snow.

2) Theoretically yes but I haven't tried it. Adding a RubbleCoef and PowerPathCoef (or PathCoef?) should do the trick, but I would not be surprised if nothing happened.

3) Nope, you can add vehicles without too many limitations. There is almost certainly an upper limit but I doubt any of us will hit that.

I can't do much with LXF files so I can do this by hand and even add treads in. Maybe this will give me some motivation to keep modding.

I've done that and it does work. It's PathCoef, not PowerPathCoef by the way.

Also, that colour does look good. The yellow seems to fit.

  • 2 weeks later...

I recently got the parts off of bricklink to bhuld this IRL, and took it outside for some pictures :D

http://imgur.com/a/e7S8P

I forgot to order the round black plates on the bottom that simulate treads, unfortunately :C

I will hopefully get around to editing to O{P today to include all stages and the final pictures.
