JrMasterModelBuilder
Having come into possessions of all 3 known different copies of LEGO Racers, I though I should assemble a complete list of all the different copes and their differences. UPDATE: Based on some other topics there may be some other, much less common versions. I cannot personally confirm or deny their existance. The copies, in order of file date modifies, are: 1999 NoDRM 1999 DRM (SafeDisc Version 1.0) 2001 (Re-release) It should be noted that, based on the support contact information in the ReadMe, it's possible that the International copy of the 1999 version of LEGO Racers is the version that has no DRM, but the US 1999 copy is the one with SafeDisc DRM.These are the files that differ between versions: LEGO Racers 1999 NoDRM: ReadMe.txt: MD5: 3d090e4eac456f45447e43933efeffc5 SIZE: 21312 MODIFIED: Jun 19 01:11:50 1999 LEGO.JAM: MD5: 16beb0b9d260a10098b141015c9dd726 SIZE: 19592720 MODIFIED: Jul 23 00:15:06 1999 GolDP.dll: MD5: a9a5ee99530f7a1b06a41e11785bda2e SIZE: 425984 MODIFIED: Jul 22 20:55:30 1999 LEGORacers.exe: MD5: 80c9577841476a26ed76749b8e4b4a9f SIZE: 802816 MODIFIED: Jul 22 20:55:48 1999 LEGO Racers 1999 DRM: ReadMe.txt: MD5: 16573a5b220b68f2b5d859765c2740fd SIZE: 21644 MODIFIED: Jul 23 08:49:34 1999 LEGO.JAM: MD5: 16beb0b9d260a10098b141015c9dd726 SIZE: 19592720 MODIFIED: Jul 23 00:15:06 1999 GolDP.dll: MD5: a9a5ee99530f7a1b06a41e11785bda2e SIZE: 425984 MODIFIED: Jul 22 20:55:30 1999 LEGORacers.exe: MD5: a0007cfe64097651e5505fba15ab5cc1 SIZE: 239351 MODIFIED: Jul 24 01:45:56 1999 LEGORacers.icd: MD5: 0fa103407cb6d68f62d6b1739f660a9c SIZE: 802816 MODIFIED: Jul 24 01:45:56 1999 LEGORacers.exe (After Decryption): MD5: f8615d61934d6302271c74928a7aeac2 SIZE: 802816 LEGO Racers 2001: ReadMe.txt: MD5: 3d090e4eac456f45447e43933efeffc5 SIZE: 21312 MODIFIED: Jun 18 14:41:50 1999 LEGO.JAM: MD5: d1a82a99ea4962d6d84f691db5f93550 SIZE: 19642024 MODIFIED: Nov 2 16:32:36 1999 GolDP.dll: MD5: e682063553de779579bf47b5e9bc5b1e SIZE: 413696 MODIFIED: Jan 12 19:46:12 2001 LEGORacers.exe: MD5: 325cbbedc9d745107bca4a8654fce4db SIZE: 987222 MODIFIED: Jan 12 19:53:28 2001 A rundown of how files differ: ReadMe.txt: ----------------------------------------------------------- LEGO Racers 1999 NoDRM & LEGO Racers 2001: Identical, but different from DRM. copy will crash if you give it the 1999 JAM, and vice versa. As for what's different about actual gameplay and execution, here is what I noticed in my short testing. The 2001 game does crash when attempting to play with extracted archives as already established, though oddly enough ProcMon shows the game accessing the extraced directories, tough to say what's going on here. Trophies do work in the 2001 copy of the game, at least if you transplant a save file from the 1999 version (I think this has already been noted). I have not tried beating a circuit race Steering does seem slightly harder on the 2001 version, at least when using the keyboard. I have not tried a game controller. Wraps seem to take me exactly as far in both versions. I tested from the same place at the end of the shortcut in Desert Adventure Dragway, and both copies put me just past where the obelisk lands. All loading screens have blue borders except for Pirate Skull Pass in both 1999 versions. According to the hashes, I have the exact same copy references >here. Perhaps something else is at play, such as different screen resolutions. The track picker has different colored borders, most notably, Rocket Racer Run's border is yellow in both 1999 versions, but red in 2001. The warp sound effect does sound different in the 2001 version. There don't appear to be any different files associated with it, so perhaps it's a different effect applied by the exe? Well, that's all I know so-far. Let me know if there is anything anyone anyone wants to know more about! UPDATE 1: Added difference notes 5-7.UPDATE 2: Added different JAM crashing notes. UPDATE 3: Added note on possible other versions. lol username
So what about Modded Lego's 1999 game that has different loading screens than the rest? To recap, my 1999 game (and everybody else's that I can think of, including yours here) has blue frames on all its loading screen track maps, except for Pirate Skull Pass. The blue frames are part of the BMP textures for the maps. The 2001 game has a different BMP for Pirate Skull Pass in its JAM that gives it a blue frame like the others. You say your two 1999 JAMs are identical, and that they both contain a different Pirate Skull Pass loading screen than the 2001 JAM. So far so good. But Modded Lego has a 1999 game that doesn't have blue frames on any of the track maps, yet his JAM's checksum is the same as that of the more standard 1999 JAM: What gives? His loading screen BMPs are likely different, right? But then wouldn't his JAM containing them have a different checksum? Is there something else going on? I looked at every single loading screen on all 3 copies, and the only loading screens without borders were Pirate Skull Pass on both the 1999 versions. According to the hashes, his copy is the 1999 NoDRM version, the exact same copy I have. If we look at this image, I had to distort his screenshot a bit to match mine (see the W/H values at the top), and his text is a very different size. Plus, no loading icons from what I can see. Perhaps he is playing at a different or custom resolution? I wonder how his Pirate Skull Pass loading screen looks.
le717
I'll double check once I turn on my laptop, but I think my 1999 copy () has a non-bordered Knightmare-Athon loading image EDIT in addition to the PSP loading image. I have two 1999 copies from the lot of LEGO games I bought last year. I think it is the same as my other one (DRM version), but I will check on that too. JrMasterModelBuilder
a non-bordered Knightmare-Athon loading image EDIT in addition to the PSP loading image. Huh? Interestingly, >origamiguy seems to have a different LEGORacers.exe in his 1999 DRM copy, but his ICD is identical to mine. Since the exe is just a stub that decrypts the ICD, his copy is probably otherwise identical.
emily
While we're here, a list of differences I know of between the PC version and the Playstation version: - Different music upon losing a race - Removed Dark Forest Dash shortcut is better covered up, with the waterfall no longer having a break where the path would be - Knightmare-Athon shortcut above the second structure is better covered up, with the LURP from Witch's Magic Manor and the surrounding scenery removed. Oddly, the red brick is still up there and plainly visible from the track. The pillar you would knock over to reach the top had been moved to the side and the shield removed. - The big U-turn on Ice Planet Pathway is no longer housed in a larger chamber with a pillar supporting it. A wall is extended in to the pillar so that the track remains completely enclosed on both sides. As a result, Veronica no longer cuts between the pillar and the wall, simply taking the road. - Veronica Voltage takes a completely different path on Pirate Skull Pass, totaling only two warps instead of 3. - Other stuff I'm not remembering? Is this relevant? I have no idea! lol username, Creator and le717
Creator
Well, it most certainly is interesting. Even at the risk of completele derailing the thread, I have to ask this: Are the regular AI racers' paths identical to the PC versions?
emily
I'm not 100% sure (as in, I haven't compared them side-by-side), but I haven't noticed anything different. I still feel that the Playstation version is measurably more difficult than the PC version, but I don't know if that has something to do with more competitive paths for the AI, an increase in their speed, or even just stiffer controls. Rocket Racer
This topic is quite interesting! I never realized that the versions had these differences when I was younger. From the looks of it, it seems I had the 1999 copy when I first started playing it; however, a guy I knew broke the disk in half, causing me to buy another copy later on. Given these details, it seem that I now possess a 2001 copy of the game.
Infomaniac95
The 1999 version is soooo much better in my opinion.
mumboking
It should be noted that, based on the support contact information in the ReadMe, it's possible that the International copy of the 1999 version of LEGO Racers is the version that has no DRM, but the US 1999 copy is the one with SafeDisc DRM.Well, I'm in the UK and mine has SafeDisc DRM... Here's the checksums from WillKirkby's Checksummer: It's the >same copy @WillKirkby has (it is not your copy. You and I have the >same one (as based on >older >hashes done before Will's Checksummer tool unless you have another copy)). I do not recall if his requires the CD. It is not the 1999 no DRM copy >ModdedLego and >dellr has.
Infomaniac95
I also seem to have a no cd version of the game. Here is a picture of the disk.
Shadowblaze
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=0eChttGKQUU They sound different because the warp sound in the 1999 version is bugged. It loops for no apparent reason, and it was fixed in the 2001 re-release. I apparently own a 2003 re-release, distributed by Dice Multi Media. And dang, I can't find my disc anywhere! Oboe Shoes
Even though it's bugged, Am I the only one who likes the sound of the looping warp better? I'm assuming that's why it made it into the final product, it kinda does sound like it's supposed to be that way. Infomaniac95
