lol username
http://www.simplyscripts.com/2014/03/15/the-lego-movie-script/ http://www.screenplaydb.com/film/scripts/lego.pdf Whoa. Is this seriously legit? It certainly fits the early descriptions we heard of the movie, with Emmet being a descendant of these ancient Master Builder people (http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/03/14/lord-miller-talk-lego-movie), and the title being "LEGO: The Piece of Resistance" (http://www.slashfilm.com/phil-lord-chris-miller-offer-title-plot-details-warner-bros-lego-movie/). There's also this: http://writetoreel.com/forum/showthread.php?4895-REQUEST-quot-The-Lego-Movie-quot-(2014)-script&p=18486&viewfull=1#post18486 I've signed up for the forum but my account isn't approved yet so I can't download the file, but it's the same size as the one previously linked to. So unless it's something different that just happens to be the same size, that would date this draft to September 27, 2010 (the movie started development in 2008). JrMasterModelBuilder
Whoa, I'll have to read through that sometime . . . or have my computer read it to me while I'm at work. If that's a fake, it's an elaborate one.
Quisoves Potoo
Fascinating. It's interesting to see how various ideas evolved. One of the more amusing elements I've seen so far is Neckbeard (an early bodiless incarnation of Metalbead) being Lucy/Wildstyle's boyfriend. EDIT: It didn't take long for me to find a plethora of much zanier things that never saw the light of day. A bullfighting tennis court, anyone? I wonder if some ambitious (and fabulously wealthy) brickfilmer will attempt to recreate this in some capacity? eagleeyedan
lol username
Found a review of the screenplay, confirming it's from 2010: http://scriptshadow.net/screenplay-review-the-lego-movie/ Also just finished reading the screenplay for myself. Wow, that was really quite something. Different enough from the final movie that I actually found myself envisioning things completely different from what the final movie ended up looking like, it was really surreal. eagleeyedan
Vector C.
Wow, that was interesting. There were some parts that I think the final film improved on (like Cloud Cuckoo Land/King Karl's Place and the Twist) while other aspects I liked better in this version (like how they handled Vitruvius and a few of the other characters.) I think the biggest surprises were how many licensed characters there were, (like Indiana Jones, whose scene would have been better if they used Johnny Thunder instead.) and the language. Was this originally not intended to be a kids film?
Ayliffe
Very interesting, I've only read the first 25 pages but I've noticed a couple of differences, such as the inclusion of Doris and a company called EMPURIA instead of Octan.
Brigs
I think the biggest surprises were how many licensed characters there were, (like Indiana Jones, whose scene would have been better if they used Johnny Thunder instead.) and the language. Was this originally not intended to be a kids film? I'm certain it was. I'd expect the directors just loved the notion of a children-friendly LEGO Minifigure using foul language, even if they could only get away with it in the preliminary scripts. On another note, that radio DJ's line seemed reminiscent of L.E.G.O. Radio.
emily
Very interesting read. It lacks the refreshing moral of the final film, and the whole "they are really controlled by humans" thing wasn't executed quite as well. But there are lots of interesting ideas and great humor. A lot of stuff that was used in early treatments for Toy Story eventually got used in the second and third films. There's a chance we may see something of that nature with the upcoming LEGO Movie sequel.
lol username
Downloaded the script on Write To Reel, and it is indeed the same PDF as the one on Screenplay DB.
ProfessorBrickkeeper
Okay, I have now (unintentionally) made a discovery which establishes the legitimacy of this script beyond a doubt. Tonight I was searching around the web for old concept art for The LEGO Movie when I came across these pieces of art. (I linked these in RRU chat and jamesster pointed out to me that) These pieces of art support the detail of the Octan tower being located in a volcano, a detail which was present in the early script but which was subsequently scrapped in the final movie. The fact that these scrapped details were indeed present in this piece of concept art therefore confirms this script as the genuine real deal. eagleeyedan
In the words of Emmet, "Awesome!" I wonder if some ambitious (and fabulously wealthy) brickfilmer will attempt to recreate this in some capacity? Now that would be quite the project. I wonder what some of the scrapped characters would look like, like Doris.
