BIONICLE RETURNING 2015

So I'm bad at art still, but here's what I'd sort of like the upper part of the Vahi to look like in an ideal world:

6TCcCfQ.jpg

It ends up being more of a headdress than a mask, but it still a) would fit on a modern bonk head, b) only covers parts of the face the lower half doesn't, c) wouldn't look half bad in the plastic, I don't think

Why don't one of you guys post a new topic about Bionicle because 2015 passed and were no longer talking about the returning of Bionicle unless you could change the title to a more appropriate title, and if you guys think that this post was a bit rude I'm sorry. I guess I shouldn't be posting this seeing that I'm not moderator.

For your consideration

This comes after a few weeks of multiple people saying that LEGO Store employees have told them that BIONICLE is shifting to online-only. This is only for LEGO Stores, not other carriers like Target or Walmart - but if an actual LEGO Store can't sell BIONICLE, well, that's probably not a good sign. Some people have suggested that this only means that the Summer 2015 wave or Winter 2016 wave are being cleared out for Summer 2016 - I guess they don't realize that isn't how LEGO works. Just like it's always been, the 2016 Toa are made to stay on the shelves for a full year, until they are replaced by a new, comparable wave.

Of course, the above report is just from a single person. And misinformation does happen a lot with LEGO employees. So its not a sure thing.

If it does turn out to be true, I'd be kind of bummed that we won't get a Makuta set. Hopefully they'd let us know somehow how the story was supposed to wrap up.

That seems a little unnecessary, but I wouldn't resent a mod updating this topic's title.

This poster is really neat! I feel like it has a lot more purpose and gravity than the last one. Also it's purple, which, let's be honest, should really have been the main color for the year of Makuta's mask all along.

Also also, there appears to be a new mask up in the clouds. People are guessing it might be the Mask of Ultimate Power. I guess we'll see!

They've been doing the new character spots for the summer sets, which of course are the first look at the new episodes. In a surprising turn of events, Ekimu's just flat out shows us the Mask of Ultimate Power.

Check it out!

I uh. I think they may not have actually finished the design yet. and they couldn't just cover it in shadow like they did last year because??????

EDIT: Also, I want to give Journey to One a fair time. I really do. But compare these two shots. They're the exact same scene.

Webisodes

Journey to One

I don't know. The first one has a sense of motion and its dynamic and energetic and dramatic and just. the second one.

why is ekimu blocking our view of makuta? why is makuta kind of just standing there? why is his armor clipping through itself? why is there no flow or movement to the image? The background and models are nice! I wish I could say they were being put to better use.

I don't know. I hate to be a negative nancy but from where I'm sitting it's just really, really hard to call this series an evolutionary step forward from last year's stuff. I guess it doesn't have to be. Sometimes things just are what they are, and that's okay!

So the Videos section of the Lego site fumbled again, and boy is it a doozy this time.

https://www.lego.com/en-us/videos/themes/bionicle/lego-bionicle-contest-video-a74b0b3ddf4d4701a6d60fec4279c583##sp=333

It's a reveal video for the Bionicle contest to build your own Makuta. But that is the least interesting thing about it. Spoilers!

Spoiler

Not only does the video reveal that Makuta will return in the fourth episode - it shows clips of him in action and shows off the real-life model that his design is based off of. Also, something something about the Toas' secret "true powers."

In addition to the Journey to One reference model, a few other Makuta MoCs by the designers are shown off - this is a video promoting a "Build Makuta" contest, after all. But one of them is a little different from the others. He gets his own special pedestal, and, unlike the others, looks a heck of a lot like he's optimized to be a set to me. I didn't think the titan Makuta set rumors held much water, but considering this may be intended to act as a designer video of sort for the model after it was supposed to be revealed... is this a real set? It has just about the right number of new pieces to expect for a set of this scale. And I mean, why would they be making those pieces if they weren't going to be on a set anyway?

And ON TOP OF all of that, they say one of the contest prizes is a signed Bionicle artbook, thereby revealing that there will be a Bionicle artbook. Holy crap.

In summary: please remember to set your videos to 'private' if you are uploading them in advance

EDIT: oh yeah, and there's even more. check out this guy hiding in the background. Familiar?

Well that's it, then. It's all ogre.

While I'm sad we didn't get a proper Makuta set (and if we even get just the mask for a contest or some BS, I'll bet money that BZPower will get them all as usual), I can at least take solace in the fact that we didn't get some Stars-quality sets this time.

ON THAT NOTE THOUGH, I wouldn't be surprised if the Star Wars buildable figures were the catalyst for this decision. They made more money from the name alone, and less effort to create original characters. I wasn't expecting Bionicle to last forever, but I was hoping for at least the full three years we heard about back in 2014.

Oh well. We got two years more than I ever hoped for, and LEGO did handle closure very well this time, with a clean break instead of skirting around the Kikanolo in the room. My only hope now is that we get some CCBS IP that isn't just bloody Star Wars.

So long, Bionicle. And thanks for all the bricks.

Official announcement. No Makuta set or Mask of Ultimate Power! Too bad.

I have a lot of thoughts in my head, so I'm gonna try writing them down.

I've had my qualms with Journey to One. Goodness knows I have - I'm sure most of you reading this know that well enough. Coming into these new episodes, though, I kind of knew what to expect as far as production value went. I think that went a long way to making the whole thing a less disappointing experience. And even though, if I cared to dig, I'm sure I could find just as many issues with the script this time around. And the animation, and the staging, and the shot-to-shot pacing, what absolutely overwhelmed me by the end was how much they just wanted to give Bionicle a good sendoff.

My idea of a sendoff probably would have been different. But what they did is, on an elemental level, so much more Bionicle than anything past 2005 ever was, up to and including G1's conclusion. They did the thing! The thing the Toa always did where they all shot their power at once to trap Makuta (and the Bahrag that one time). Let me tell you a secret: planet-sized robots fighting is okay, but it's not very Bionicle. This was, after a fashion.

And they didn't hold back on the parallels to the original films, either. The Shadow Realm Makuta is trapped in is represented by a rock that looks just like the shard Roodaka claws from Makuta's rock prision in Web of Shadows. It even has a propensity for shooting out a shadowy hand to suck people in with - just like old Makuta did (he used the ability through the rock in Web of Shadows, but I couldn't get a screenshot that shows it well). Visually, the Toa sealing Makuta back away is just like Legends of Metru Nui, too. And in both productions, the shot is closely followed by the Toa's spirits in the stars (literally, and metaphorically).

And then we end on "For that is the Legend of BIONICLE," which doesn't only carry on the tradition of how the original films concluded, but actually acknowledges the original in-universe meaning of "Bionicle" - the legend of the Toa who will arrive to save the island. That's something that hasn't been touched since 2001.

It's not perfect. But goddamn, they really gave it their all, and I can't help but really, deeply admire that. As far as ways to say goodbye to Bionicle go, its a hell of a lot better than any other option that's come up since Mask of Light. And I think I'm okay with leaving it at that.

Goodbye again, Bionicle. And thanks for everything.

Quisoves Potoo

It seems the prophecies have changed. Shame about that.

My feelings are well and truly mixed. I am by turns darkly amused, morbidly curious, sad, and rather relieved.

Let's start with that ending. Hmmm.... Not my piece of cake. I had already given up on Journey to One being even passable fare, so I only watched the finale to see what all the fuss was about, but still, it's hilariously rushed. "Makuta is coming through the Black Gate Shadow Portal. It's a good thing that we're actually stars! All we need is to believe in ourselves! Bye-bye!"

I am genuinely curious as to how much of this they planned from the start. It looks to me like they made it up on the spot, but I know from experience that this is a tremendously unfair assumption. If nothing else, it does parallel the climax of LoMN.

Then there's the loose ends... The Mask of Time's the biggie, but I don't doubt there were many other stillborn concepts. Let's hope they all see the light of day.

I'm quite curious as to how Gen2 bombed so badly. Hero Factory sold well enough to run for five years (though it was playing the porter for BIONICLE on both ends, to be fair,) and yet BIONICLE didn't last three. What changed? I almost wonder, absurd as this may sound, if the target audience at large mistook it for a licensed IP, and were turned off by knowing nothing about it.

It's a shame it had to end on this note. A death at three years would have been natural. Sure, we'd have been disappointed at not seeing the Once and Future Theme return to take its rightful place in the Immortal Pantheon of Break Out Themes (for now occupied only by magical assassins with a penchant for outrageous vehicles,) but hey, there's no shame in doing well enough. It's also rather sad, IMO, to see the decline in set quality. Winter 2015? Awesome. Summer 2015? Not quite as cool, but still pretty good, not to mention novel and with some fantastic pieces. Winter 2016? Disappointing, overly-greebled Toa (Onua being a major exception,) but at least Umarak and the creatures were lovely. Summer 2016? Blargh, meh, humbug. Winter 2017? Well, hopefully they'll have learned from the reaction to the 2015 sets and they'll make a- Oh.

But in a strange way, it's a relief to know that Gen2 is dead. Gone is the oppressive uncertainty and fear born of hearing whispered reports of the theme's ill-health. It failed, yes, but we are at the wake, and the funeral is not long in coming. It will not bring joy, but it will bring closure, and that can not be undervalued.

On the bright side, provided LEGO doesn't decide to jump the in-house contstaction ship all together, Gen2's successor must be more than just a cut-price BIONICLE. Perhaps we'll get something new and wonderful. Perhaps out of this tragedy, much good will come.

Regardless, I would like to thank the Gen2 team for their efforts. It's clear they put their hearts and souls into this, and for that I commend them. Thank you all. Thank you for helping to recapture some of the magic of my childhood. Y'all rock!

I wasn't gonna have most of my G2 stuff out on display anyway, so I disassembled some of 'em and, well, here he is. the bionic man himself

DlB8wuS.jpg

He's big. Very big. "Probably the biggest makuta," you're saying. well sorry, friend, but you're wrong

Even ignoring the wings, Ultimate Dume still has a massive height advantage. He's got nothing on the new one's part count, though. My fingers are sore all over.

EDIT: Oh yeah, he has the wrong mask right now, but there's a pretty accurate one that'll be on shapeways soon. thanks fanbase!

New video from Faber to send off Bionicle. Most of it is old news, but there's a fair bit of new Voodoo Heads goodness in there. Too bad there's an old-timey black and white filter over it all, lol. Screencaps of the interesting stuff + thoughts below.

Spoiler

Early Mata Nui + name concepts. I like "Who Heads."

Proto Amaja Nui. I'm in love.

we've had a tiny image of these for years, but while these are black and white, they're a LOT clearer. No official word on it, but they do appear to be the concepts that the final sets were based on. Note how very Throwbot-y they are in proportion, especially Ax/Lewa. I like Pohatu's goggles a lot too. There's also a really interesting guy in the background of Flame/Tahu and Claw/Onua whose got a weird three-arm thing going on. I really want to know who they are. Last note, you can't see it in the screenshot but in Kick/Pohatu's image there some tech sticking out from under the rock. Kinda neat detail.

New image from the pitch that got Bionicle approved.

So re: that post right above mine, he deleted the video and replaced it with a video with a single image, a more recent piece of his. I guess he wants people to move on and stuff so, ok?

All I can say is I'm glad I had the foresight to see this coming after he deleted that Hero Factory post on his blog. I have the original video saved on my hard drive.
