    LR: Minifigure Space textures

My aim is to recreate as many (old) minifigures in LEGO Racers. Right now I'm focusing on LEGO Space minifigures. This is what I already textured. Textures may look stretched at some times, due to the poses the minifigs take. Note that these textures may not be the final result. You can click on the images to enlarge them. Scrapped Zones And More

Oh man, you guys aren't gonna believe this stuff... Tom and I talked quite a bit via email today, and Bill Benecke (the concept artist guy) got involved too. They're really great guys, both very friendly, and were happily surprised to hear the game has fans. Here's the rundown. So, I initially emailed Tom and briefed him on the game/theme's status as a well-loved classic in the LEGO community, our progress in modding it, and the various finds regarding LEGO Logic and such, and basically asked if he had any info he could add to this. Boy, did he ever! So yeah, my jaw dropped. I sent an email back, thanking him for the details, and also linking him to this and this as examples of what fans have done with the theme. He loved them, and added that he's gonna try to dig up some more LEGO Logic and Alpha Team development stuff sometime. He also had an amusing little anecdote to share: He also mentioned where some of the other developers are at now, and what their current projects are: He then forwarded my email to Bill, who added the following: And Bill's email reminded Tom of more specific details of LEGO Logic, and then things started really coming together: And finally: I'm so darn happy right now.

A Taste of What is to Come...

UPDATE: The final download pack can be found >here. Click on the image for a full 1080p version. Thanks to le717 for his technical support with both modding LDD and using POV-Ray, and credit for the decals goes to LuxorV from Eurobricks. I'd really like a suitable cave background to place behind this, something akin to the game's loading screen if possible, but definitely 1080p - can anyone suggest such an image?

LEGO Castle Images Surface (And Insight from McStudz)

Oh no, the castle theme has been simplified to appeal to younger kids while LEGO focuses on providing more detailed and advanced Lord of the Rings sets for the older audience! How dare LEGO appeal to multiple age ranges at once! Seriously, I can see why older fans are disappointed, but honestly these sets aren't aimed at us, they're aimed at the younger audience who prefer the brighter colors and simpler construction over the darker tones and more advanced sets for Lord of the Rings. It's basically another shot at Knights Kingdom 1... And I've actually heard people on RRU express happy nostalgia for that theme, which was even more dumbed down than this.

    Tutorial: Skin Texturing

Good question Nitegeist! To get the bad news out of the way, you can't have semi-transparency. Pixels are either clear or filled. This is because the game defines transparency by assigning each individual texture with a certain RGB colour code to use for transparency. For instance, Basil the Batlord's hat above uses a certain shade of black as its transparency colour. When the game loads the texture, it searches for the specific RGB colour used for transparency and displays them as clear pixels instead in-game. However, the good news is this does mean that you can choose what colour is used for transparency, and thus what parts of the texture are transparent. The RGB colour code required for a pixel to be transparent is defined in the relevant binary file - I can't remember which ones, having a quick look through now I can't find them, but I'm sure they're there somewhere. You can obviously just use the default colour though if it's easier than editing the binary files. This means you can easily create HD versions (like you have) with the transparency still working correctly, just make sure you don't anti-alias the image but instead use hard edges. On a side note, Basil's helmet splits the texture into squares rather than accurate shapes, meaning that you can give him twin flags instead of dragon wings Most helmets do this, although I'm not sure about Achu's. I hope that's helped!

    New Skyboxes

I'm not sure if this belongs here, since Skyboxes are gradients, rather than textures, but they change in-game visuals, so it's sort of fitting, I suppose. Anyway, I created some personal in-game backgrounds (skyboxes), based on the backgrounds from box deisgns and catalogues. Since LR1 skyboxes are defined by a mere three colours, the possibilities are sort of limited, but I chose to share this anyway... Super Sonic Blaster

This is a reskin of the Sonic Blaster that should be less prone to crashing. Right now this adds no extra gameplay advantage, but I did find that extending the BOOM.lws animation does increase the time that monsters will be repelled, so I may release an extended version later. Download link is here.

    Dino Grand Prix

I'm fairly sure that the LEGO.JAM file in the PS1 game is the same as in the PC game. At least I remember someone saying, if I'm wrong let me know. The contents aren't the same, but the format is, if I remember right. So you can extract the PS1 JAM like the PC one (and the N64 ROM, too, with a bit of tweaking). And no, we don't have an extractor for the GTC format yet, these were ripped through some other program I can't remember at the moment.

    Review: #8046 Helicopter

LEGO Technic #8046 Helicopter Review by RobExplorien And the Technic sets keep coming. Going from the green to the red, it is the #8046 Helicopter from LEGO Technic. This aircraft set made its first appearance in 2010 (I got it in that same year for Christmas), and shows quite some resemblance with the #8068 Rescue Helicopter. It was sold at a retail price of $19,99/€14,99 (according to Brickipedia). This, in contrast with the #8256 Go Kart, which includes less pieces, but was sold at a higher retail price (euro); the Go Kart was sold for €16,99 and this Helicopter set for €14,99. The boxart generally is the same for all (lately) released Technic sets, so there's not much more to say other than I already described in earlier reviews I've done of LEGO Technic sets. A few features to point out already (note the lower right corner on the front of the box), the rotating blades and the winch. It also is no surprise that this Technic set has a '2 in 1' feature. The alternate model will be revealed on the back of the box. Both main and alternate model are aircrafts. So, aside from the Helicopter, a Seaplane can be build as well. It features a rotating propeller, which can be rotated by twisting the gears near the wings. A more detailed description of these models will follow, along with more images of these models, in construction and complete. Now to move on to the contents of the box: 152 pieces 0.5m (1.7ft) black string 2 instruction booklets The pieces mainly vary in red, white and black colours. The small white box holds the black string. The quality of this string is not really good; it starts to get untwisted at the ends, meaning that the string is literally starting to fall apart. Even though having no stickers, the LEGO Company still knows a way to vex you with low quality string. Luckily, replacing this string yourself with a new/better one shouldn't be a problem. I do have a better review on the instructions of the main model of this set, than I had with the instructions of the #8256 Go Kart. Where the main model of the latter has 50 steps for 144 pieces, the main model of the former has 35 steps for 152 pieces, an improvement. But ironically, the Seaplane of this set has building instructions explained in 41 steps, for about 110 pieces. So, how does logic work again? The Seaplane definitely isn't any harder to build than the Helicopter, and the Helicopter even uses the 'tedious to attach'-string. The upper instructions pictured belong to the Helicopter, the lower to the Seaplane. Just look at it, step 1 and 2 of the lower instructions could be merged easily, as well as step 3 and 4 of the upper instructions. Anyway, let's get to the building. This is what the model looks like at step 17. The core of the gear system is in place, and the long axle on the right will be connected to the rear propeller of the helicopter. Red elements are already in place, and the winch is to be hidden in the back of the helicopter. Not far ahead of step 17. A notable change is the addition of the rear part. Arriving at step 25, and now you can see the rear propeller attached and connected to the gear system. The white and read elements nicely cover up the gears, aside from the upper gears, which aren't yet covered. Now two red caps cover up the upper gears, and make the helicopter look a lot better in my opinion. You also get a better view on how the long axle is connected to the rear propeller. The front part is still to be added, using the flexible axles (which are visible in the back). There is a tiny detail to point out at these flexible axles. It is the mold 'leftover', that middle part of the flexible axle (see image in spoiler). Instead of one smooth line (as preferred), it is interrupted by a mold 'leftover'. The LEGO brand moldings on this axle is not what I'm talking about, that is mandatory. And then, it's finished. Three long black blades, two blue movable seats in the cockpit, red and white elements which I think fit well with helicopters, and gears on the side to rotate blades and rear propeller, and a working winch to carry objects (like bricks). There are spare parts, but not pictured. More of the Helicopter: The other model, the Seaplane, is a little less complicated to build. Pictured below is the state of the Seaplane in step 10. Then you slide the propeller connected to the axle through the beam holes, and the first step in making this model look like an aircraft is done. And after you went through the other steps, the Seaplane is complete. It uses the caps (from the former model) as wings, and the blades as floats. The Seaplane has gears on both sides, to make the propeller rotate by turning them, and uses flexible axles to finish off the cockpit. Lots of spare parts come with this alternate model, so adding extra features to the Seaplane, like adding a winch, is an option. More of the Seaplane: Having this set examined and tested, I come to the following conclusion: Not much more to tell about the boxart. It has become standard for LEGO Technic sets to have this kind of boxart, but an alternate background would be nice. Understanding the instructions shouldn't be a problem, but merging some steps could've been done. The pieces have a fitting colour for these aircraft models, kinda reminds me of a rescue chopper. No stickers, but a piece of string vexes me in its quality. You can build nice models with this set. The Helicopter has a cool feature in which both blades and rear propeller rotate simultaneously when turning a gear, and the Seaplane makes clever use of the blades as floats. Shot that Bats!

The three original monsters are hard-coded to spawn tiny monsters. Rock and Lava monsters spawn Tiny Rock Monsters, and Ice Monsters spawn Tiny Ice Monsters. Everything else spawns nothing.

    LEGO Racers Soundtrack

Personally, I can't stand the GBC conversion's music. It may not help that the game is terrible in general (heck, I'd go so far to call it So Bad It's Horrible), but it sounds like they put the music into an 8-bit blender and this was the result. Maybe it's just me though...

    Hello

Indeed it is. It is back from when I first played Lego Racers and wasn't able to clear the game. Then one day, I made a random character, used the default name "Spiller 1" (and removed the number), along with a stock car. Then I beat the game like a boss and I have been using that name ever since.
