And spell correctly. If you don't know how to spell something, type it into Google or Word first. It will spellcheck it for you. Also, a tip. If you want one of these as your avatar, DO NOT pick one with a typo. It makes you look ignorant.

    Wot I Fink: Copying

*sigh* Peer pressure. I'm going to be honest. A certain part of me has been both laughing and cringing at the recent influx of members who have taken to the blogs to express their feelings after certain events transpired (and a lot of me didn't want to acknowledge it with a Wot I Fink). However, it has been interesting to see everybody's thoughts laid out before I get to writing a Wot I Fink on the subject, and because of that, it's given me a lot more things to consider and talk about. So, put your flaming torches down for just a second, because I've got a fair bit to get off my chest. First, let's start with something I want to nitpick on. There seems to be a common belief here that "copying" and "plagiarism" are interchangeable terms. They are, for all intents and purposes, pretty close, but whereas "copying" is just replicating something someone else created, "plagiarism" is completely stealing it and passing it off as your own without acknowledging the original source. The difference is in the acknowledgement (or at least the referencing) of the source material. I'm not going to name names or cite examples, but I think that explanation makes it pretty clear that these blogs are all regarding the latter term. Plagiarism is, in most civilised states of the world, a very serious offence. Supposedly in Los Angeles, plagiarism in school is enough to put you on a public register and have you expelled, so that all the schools know you've essentially been cheating, and they too will refuse you entry. It's considered a very serious crime by most people, and for a good reason. It's not your INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. The thing with copying is that, while you are essentially recreating something someone else has done, you still admit that it's not your idea and then, in most cases, you will add something new to the copy or tweak it in some way to give it a new purpose or breath new life into it. That's essentially what fan-fictions, music remixes and video game mods are, and so long as the author has no reservations about how their work is used (I'm not going to completely explain IP laws and patents right now), everyone remains happy. Even the use of Deconstruction qualifies as a good copy, as long as the deconstruction is done well and isn't played straight for the sake of being played straight (and therefore just becoming a copy). With plagiarism, you're completely doctoring the thoughts and words of somebody else, without indicating that you didn't create the work (or the idea for the work) in the first place. When somebody creates something or writes something, it becomes their intellectual property (unless you're in a job where your contract specifies the disclosing party owns your work). They own it. Simply making any piece of intellectual property look like you created it (by rearranging words, rewriting in your own words or throwing in bogus content) should be considered an immoral action, and one that should be treated as such. Why? Because it undermines the very core of our political and economical structures (unless your communist, where you can ignore this entire blog since the Government owns everything you make automatically), and more importantly, it ruins the way that we as humans grow and learn. If we could simply cheat our way through life and gain nothing from experience, we would not be as advanced as we are today. Charlemagne didn't say he created all the books he used to rebuild civilisation. If he had, he would have become an emperor, and having a barbarian as an emperor could have only led to some dire circumstances. Furthermore, what about the creators of the intellectual property? If you sell the work as your own, they don't get paid. If you claim you did it, who are the people going to believe, and if it's not them, how will they be able to build their reputation up? I don't think stealing intellectual property is on the same level as murder or arson, but it's definitely a crime that deserves punishment more than just a simple warning. As a creator of a lot of new intellectual property, I know the sting when somebody steals your work, and it truly is the one thing that sends me into a rage unseen by the members of this site (and most people in real life). The worst part is when the plagiarist themselves don't (or simply refuse to) understand the implications it has on not just the original creator, but on everybody in society. In many circumstances, the plagiarist can't even accept the fact it is hurting the original creator, even if they know and interact with that creator in their day-to-day life. Using other peoples ideas to strengthen yours can be okay. That's how we got Star Wars, BioShock and even the Printing Press, which is a big reason for you and me being right here and right now. The thing is, they used basic concepts, and went in a different direction from the source material. They looked at the underlying reasons for why and how the idea worked and what implications (positive and negative) they could find buried in the implementation of the idea. Most importantly, though, if you looked at any of these works, you would notice that they don't shy away from what they reference. Most people know about "Ayn Rand" being rearranged to form "Andrew Ryan". Star Wars is pretty good as an allegory for WW2 and the Vietnam war. The printing press looked pretty much exactly the same as the wine presses it was based off. The difference here is that they were going in a different direction to the original work, and/or they were even attempting to comment on the original work. They acknowledged their original sources, albeit in creative ways. When you plagiarise someone's work, the deepest meaning behind it is that either "you're lazy" or "you're a scumbag". It's a despicable practice and everyone is better than that. You might find that, if you spend effort slowly crafting your work, it may turn out much better than anything ever created before. And even if it doesn't, you'll gain more from the experience than just copying what somebody else did. Therefore, turn off the internet. Stop yourself from reading your friend's answers. Think carefully, and ask for help if needed. We all have a duty to bring something new to this world, and your failure to do so hurts everybody in the end. And that's Wot I Fink. P.S.: I think it's also morally unacceptable to straight copy somebodies work, even if you do acknowledge the originally source. That is, without a valid reason. For example, ORR is not in this category, because we want a version of LegoRR which we can modify beyond the normal game.

LEGO Racers Car Builder and Quick Builds

On a forum such as Rock Raiders United, where could I possibly go after successfully recreating all Rock Raiders vehicles and buildings in LEGO Digital Designer? There are so many possibilities for things exclusive to classic LEGO software that can be recreated in LEGO Digital Designer! Except... what hasn't been done already? LEGO Racers circuit host cars, LEGO Racers NPC cars, LEGO Island buildings... heck, even my attempt to recreate the LMS Explorer bridge has become redundant. What could I possibly do that others haven't done already? Wait... of course! LEGO Racers cars! ... Hasn't that already been done before? Not like... this! I hereby present to you, the full LEGO Racers car builder... in LEGO Digital Designer! Now, you can build LEGO Racers cars in LEGO Digital Designer! Of course, special thanks goes to jamesster for the chassis of circuit hosts and Ageha for the Basic, Race, Space, and Castle chassis, but all the rest of the car parts were assembled by me while scrolling through the brick selections of each car set. There are a few errors here. Most decorations are either incorrect or missing altogether due to LEGO Digital Designer's limitations. LEGO Racers also uses a pair of angled bricks that do not exist in real life; wherever these bricks show up in the car sets, I have substituted in 50373 Brick 4X4/18o instead. Also, keep in mind that the car builder in LEGO Racers takes some... liberties with how certain parts can be placed on the car; see the errors below to have an idea. Some bricks, such as the jet turbines in Rocket Racer's car set, required some interpretation in regards to how they would work. I'll be honest with you. While it's nice that LEGO Racers gives you the option to mix bricks of different car sets when building your car, I think the car builder in LEGO Racers 2 is far superior and much less frustrating to use. Despite having a larger palette to use, the LEGO Racers car builder is far too restrictive; too often, I'll be trying to build a cool car only to discover that a brick that I want to place is bumping against the all-too-tight invisible boundaries of the vehicle. And if you change your mind and want to take out a certain brick, you have to take off every single brick that you put on the car after that one brick, while LEGO Racers 2 gives you the option to cycle through the bricks you've already put on the car. For those reasons, I rarely build good-looking cars in LEGO Racers... but now, in LEGO Digital Designer's much more user-friendly building software, I can actually build cars to the full freedom I want to use. Want this car builder for yourself? Here's a download link for the LXF! So then, I was wondering... what was the best way to show off the capabilities of this car builder? Well, since all NPC cars have already been taken care of... why not build the rest of the Quick Builds? As far as I know, this has never been done before... until now! Of course, given that LEGO Racers' car builder does cheat in a few ways, there are a few necessary errors in these LEGO Digital Designer recreations. Without further ado, let's take a closer look at each car! The first Basic quick build is a nice little compact car. It's quaint and nothing special, but easy on the eyes at least. It can also be built free of errors LEGO Digital Designer! The second Basic quick build has a similarly quaint appearance. The decorations on the tile bricks are obviously incorrect due to the actual decorations not being in LEGO Digital Designer. Because the actual car uses those nonexistent angled bricks, I substituted in the actual brick placed on an extra 2x2 plate. The first Race quick build is a little jarring in appearance, to be honest, what with those giant engines on the front raised so high that the driver cannot possibly see what's in front of him. The flags also look a little out of place, but that's likely due to the car builder's restrictions not allowing the flags to be placed any higher than directly on top of the chassis. See what I mean about it being restrictive? But at least this LEGO Digital Designer model has no errors. The second Race quick build looks better in my opinion, but against makes use of that nonexistent pair of angled bricks. Substituting in the actual brick means that 4746 Rocket Engine has to be raised 2/3 of a brick higher on this model than it actually is in-game. The first Space quick build strikes me as an oddity, since it makes enough use of the Castle car set to appear more Castle-themed than Space-themed. This recreation has no errors. The second Space quick build also uses Castle bricks, but at least has a slightly more futuristic appearance. Unfortunately, those fake angled bricks are used again, but this time in a way that makes it impossible to substitute in the real brick, so instead they have been replaced with 6564 Right Roof Tile 2X3 and 6565 Left Roof Tile 2X3. The first Castle quick build looks quite odd, what with the contrast between the Castle wheels and the Space rocket engines! There are no errors in this model. The second Castle quick build, again, makes use of Space rocket engines that contrast with the chassis appearance. What with the wars between Castle fans and Space fans, I guess LEGO Racers was trying to be the peace negotiator? No errors here! The alternate Captain Redbeard quick build... hoo boy, this one's a doozy. The handles on the treasure chest, which are left out of the in-game model, collide with the bars and the steering wheel, so I had to raise the whole chest by a whole 2x4 brick to clear them both! And then, to prevent them from colliding with the rear wheels and engines, the two parrot pieces had to be raised by two plates. Obviously, the flag decoration is incorrect as well. The alternate King Kahuka quick build has a nice compact design to it, almost looking like an Islander bunker! Better yet, it can be built without errors! The alternate Basil the Bat Lord quick build is basically a souped-up version of the main quick build. As a result, it looks much cooler and leaves you wondering why that wasn't made Basil's main car. There is only one error here: because the rocket engine collides with the 2432 Clamp 1X2 bricks, I had to move it back one stud. The alternate Johnny Thunder quick build is another one that I like. Between the flamethrowers and the bow/arrow, it has a rather unconventional appearance, but still looks like it would fit in the Adventurers theme. No errors, as far as I know. The alternate Baron von Barron quick build is... eh. Especially because there are no plates in the car builder, that gap between the front hood and headlights parts really bothers me. The pair of antennas and the white spoiler also look out-of-place. The alternate Gypsy Mother quick build looks really cool in-game, so I'm not altogether sure why I feel... underwhelmed by how it looks in LEGO Digital Designer. Aside from missing decorations, there are no errors here. Also, ignore the fact that the wheels look metallic in these screenshots; I just noticed this and corrected this in the LXF but was too lazy to retake the screenshots. The alternate Rocket Racers quick build looks a little odd, what with the giant jet turbines. As I said before, these parts required a little interpretation to figure out how they would attach to a 1x2 brick. Aside from that, and the missing decoration on the hood, it's error-free. The alternate Veronica Voltage quick build is surprisingly different in appearance from the main quick build, especially since it mostly uses white bricks from the Basic and Space palettes. Unfortunately, those darn fake angled bricks show up again in a way that I cannot substitute in the real brick, so I had to do the same thing here that I did with the second Space quick build. ----- So, what do you guys think? An impressive attempt at recreating the car builder and quick builds in the most accurate presentation to date? Or am I just someone who is late to the game and trying my hand at something done countless times before me to much greater fanfare? Once again? And what could possibly be next on my agenda?

I'm not sure if this belongs here, since Skyboxes are gradients, rather than textures, but they change in-game visuals, so it's sort of fitting, I suppose. Anyway, I created some personal in-game backgrounds (skyboxes), based on the backgrounds from box deisgns and catalogues. Since LR1 skyboxes are defined by a mere three colours, the possibilities are sort of limited, but I chose to share this anyway... Here, let me explain. So the headpiece is two rubber bands wrapped around a white helmet. These rubber bands hold the little lever thing in place. As for the shoulder pads, I'm GUESSING that the way the arms are positioned pushes the two visors on his shoulders back, thus holding them in place. I suppose I could make my own to explain better if you need it. dunno if Im being clear enough or not. Thank you so much for explaining that. I can finally have my own Sam Gideon now.

    Exploding LEGO logo

A couple of weeks ago I made a blog post about a a video I made using a reversed LEGO software ident to make it look like the LEGO logo was exploding. I've just made an updated version and I thought I'd give it a thread rather than a blog post, because this is a forum after all This one uses the highest quality version of the LEGO logo video that I have found, ripped straight from one of the BIONICLE movie DVDs. I also got rid of the LEGO Island music that I used in the first version and used sounds from the extended Rock Raiders intro from an old demo CD, I think it works quite nicely for the "explosion". Also, since I managed to isolate the High Voltage Software music the other day, I tried mixing it with the normal, non-reversed LEGO logo and it almost feels like they were made for each other, if you ask me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f3RL12aolE.

  28. It is legal to create a personal backup copy for archival purposes only. Law can also over-ride license agreements if they contradict the law. I have never seen anything regarding in what state that the archived copy must be in. Converting the contents of the disc to a disc image (digital copy) cannot be illegal because you must in some form run the data through a computer system to create a duplicate... creating a digital copy of the data.. If your acquire a digital copy that is not a backup of your legal disc, it is illegal. If you sell your legal disc you must destroy your archived copy. http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-digital.html#backup BIN+CUE creates a more raw and accurate disc image. ISO does not store multi-track data or disc specific information. This is especially important when archiving older computer and console games. An example with LRR would be that if using ISO, you will lose the audio tracks on the PC game.

(Please see the Software License Agreement) Although, he legally bought the game(Possibly)and therefore he did indeed pay the company.(Unless he got it from Amazon or eBay, or, worst of all, a garage sale, but he still owns it legally.)
