Insane Raiders [2022-12-29: Occasional updates are still happening!]
Starrocks923 reacted to Arthuriel for a topic
Update (2022-12-29): I don't know how often I will use this forum, but I just wanted to write that once in a while I still make Insane Raiders themed comics. They are simpler (more like a sketch) and without colour, but they are still full of dubious decisions related to dynamite and landslides! Since I posted those only in Discord chat rooms etc. so far (where they can go under) I wanted to put them in one place and so I added them to my existing Insane Raiders gallery on DeviantArt. I hope you enjoy them! https://www.deviantart.com/arthuriel/gallery/50994783/insane-raiders Note: It can take a few seconds to load all the comics (depending on your internet connection). Hi, this is a thread, where I will try to continue a comic series every or every second week (note: replace week with month(s)). Usually they are based on my experiences with the Rock Raider PC game and the behavior of the Rock Raiders (including a good portion of insanity and exaggaration). Number 1. Dynamite Number 2. Guardian Outpost
aidenpons reacted to RRChief for a topic
Hey guys! After a delay of almost 4 months, I'm back with my newest RR building creation, presenting the Guardian Outpost! The Guardian Outpost is the ultimate base defence, it consists of two main towers, each housing a laser cannon and sonic emitter dish. The laser cannon serves to destroy any rock monsters trying to wreck your base (or act as a mining laser if you want ), while the sonic emitter dishes scare away any pesky slimy slugs looking for a quick EC snack. Thats not all! It also comes packed with two landing pads, each housing a tunnel scout so you can perform reconnaissance & scouting missions. Moreoever, unlike most other buildings, the Guardian Outpost can just be teleported down instead of having to go through the labourious process of having to set up the barriers and carry the resources over etc if you have the necessary ores & ECs. This way you can quickly reinforce an area far away from your main base to protect your Raiders or the resources they are trying to collect. Hope you all like it! A creation by RRChief1 point -

The default palette on the phone is a bit annoying but no big deal. There isn't really anything wrong with that one, and you can't really shade it unless you made a larger one or one at a different angle. The spaceship is good as well, but there isn't any shading. When I first saw it I thought that there was, I guess the blue at the back causes an optical illusion. Speaking of which, I think it would be a lot cooler if the blue was transparent, slightly for the part around the ship and a bit more for the trail. I'm not sure if your app could do that. Also because of the Fire (fire in space?) the blue behind the ship wouldn't be purely blue, but kind of purple-y around the exhaust, but again, being able to pick good colours comes with time and practice. As to the fuzziness of the sprites, it is probably just size. I work usually around 100px by 100px and my avatar is 200% magnification (as well as the swords I posted) where as your sprites are normal magnification at 48px by 48px. On a small screen they may be shrunk. All in all they are quite nice though.1 point -

I took your sword, DrillMaster, and added a few little changes to it purely in the shading to increase its visual appeal and to make it seem more realistic. Here is the new sword as well as your old one. I will list the changes, why I made them, and how to apply them elsewhere. 1-a) Metal is very shiny, particularly sharp metal and gold/silver. You have both here but no major highlights. I added a bright white highlight to the bottom ball thing at the end of the hilt, a section on the top of the guard and a large section right at the middle of the sword touching the darker part. Having them touching provides a striking contrasts that implies an edge and makes the other side also seem darker. 1-b) Along the blade I also added vertical bands of highlight. I don't know why light reflects like that off of metal sometimes, but it looks nice as long as it is not overdone. The very top band where the sword changes angle is to show another edge. Metal brightly reflects at edges and corners. 2) You are using a default palette, but unfortunately they are not usually sophisticated enough to have good colours for gold. Gold turns orangey when it gets darker, not greenish, so I changed that. An eye for colour will come with time. And practice. Always practice. 3) Your guard is overhanging the grip but was not casting a shadow, so I added one. Try to visualize how large everything is in each direction to get the shadows right. 4) The wood on the handle did not have high enough contrast for the shading to be highly visible, so I darkened the shaded portion. Unlike the metal parts, I did not add a third colour to the red or brown. As the cord and wood are not highly reflective, they do not need a highlight and the colors are simple enough not to need a huge palette variety. 5) I added some shading inside of the guard in the effort to make it look ridged and as if it were coming out and had more shape than just a piece of tubular bent metal. On the brighter side highlights are the highlight colour, on the darker side they are the brighter colour but not a highlight colour even though they are a highlight. That's pretty basic but still worth mentioning. 6) Personal preference, but I hate detached pixels. I deleted the very tip pixel on the sword. (That means I lied about changing the shape. Oh well.)1 point -

Papa's last words as Captain D. Rom attempted to use the drive in from his Helicopter, tragically miscalculating the distance between Papa and the blades of the Helicopter So I guess it's a hit and fly incident since I seem him flying away. Anyway, I don't think Papa minds losing his head (or torso) as he is still smiling.1 point -

How did you get interested in Legos?
Skanibani reacted to Zed for a topic
I wasn't sure if there was already a thread like this, so I decided to make one. In this thread, you can share your story of how you became interested in Lego. Here's mine: The first time I remember having Legos was when my grandfather sent me a bucket of Lego bricks when I was probably 3 1/2 years old. When I was four, remember my daycare principal's son giving me his Legos stuff from 1990 - 1998 because he was going to joining the army. I also remember having Lego Creator, Lego Racers, Lego Island, and Lego Island Xtreme Stunts (4/6 Lego games I currently own!) When I was 4 or 5 years old. Since that time, I have been collecting Legos until I stopped around 2007-2008. I still buy some old sets/lots on ebay every 3-6 months, but I don't buy anything current.1 point -

GBA Final Fantasy... that's good, good. Thought there are 4 GBA FF games... Dawn of Souls, 4 and 5 all use the same style, but 6's style is drastically different. What you have ATM is closer to the DoS/4/5 style than 6 so I'm guessing you mean that. All of the sprites (and I mean all of them) in DoS at least all use the same base, if you look at them all the body proportions are the same, only the hair and outfit changes. I'd suggest, for this particular project, to take one of the DoS sprites and edit it instead of stating from scratch. It will be both easier and more true to the style.1 point -

*A wild SPRITIST appears* What will you do? >Fight >Item >PKMN >Run Okay so first, everything depends on what your goal is here. 1. What will this be used for, ultimately, and 2. What kind of style are you trying to achieve? This looks like something out of an old DOS game, and if that was you're goal then you succeeded. However I'm going to guess you're not trying to emulate DOS sprites. Call it a hunch. I'd say it probably needs to be a bit bigger if you want to get any level of detail in there, unless you're trying to do a 8-bit type of sprite. If that's what you want then the colors are a little bold, 8-bit systems usually have more subdued colors. Also, as a side note, the NES at least has a 4-color limit on sprites, with transparency taking up a color slot. That puts you one color over the limit if you intend to follow it, you don't have to though. Other than that I'd need to know a bit more, so if you could at the very least answer the previous two questions I could help you much better.1 point -

Tell that to the Crash Bandicoot fandom As for Pokemon, I love it but I really don't play enough of it. I need to start playing White again. And I can't think of a favourite Pokemon, but strangely I always try to have a Tangela in my party. And hell hath no fury if I accidentally evolve it into Tangrowth, let me tell you.1 point -

I still play Red version periodically... would you believe I still have yet to beat it? I've gotten further in it than in any other game in the series, though, and oddly enough outclasses all of them in almost every aspect. The PC system is buggy, complicated and frustrating but that is my only complaint. The gameplay is simple and straightforward (and most importantly fun). The graphics, while being simple blocky and monochrome have a stylized, clean look to them that that the newer games lack, even though they have more colors and larger sprites (Firered and Leafgreen, the 'enhanced' remakes of Red and Blue, actually look worse). The music is catchy, though that could just be my fondness for chiptunes. TBH the newer games have some pretty epic music as well, and that (along with the better PC system) is one of the few actual improvements that have been made. But the original music is still some of the best (IMO). Most of all, the original games had an atmosphere to them that the newer games lack. They were, for lack of a better word, mysterious. Nobody knew quite what to make of them when they first came out. There are rumors and legends surrounding them to this day (The truck, Bill's secret garden, the 'Pokegods,' Mewthree, Blue's dead Rattata, the lavender town music, the 'white hand,' (actually everything about lavender town), etc.). The games are riddled with glitches, which instead of being a frustration actually make the game better. Almost none of them activate inadvertently, they require complex, deliberate actions to be performed. And pulling them off allows you to screw with your game in ways that it was never meant to be screwed. And it. is. epic. These glitches help to fuel the rumors about the game and add to it's mysterious aura because they exposed things that you would never expect to be in the game to start with. I mean, Mew? MissingNo? If there are Pokemon that exist within the game and literally cannot be obtained through normal gameplay, who knows what else could be hiding in the game's code? (Note that by this point it's generally accepted that we've discovered every secret the game has to offer. The point is that when things that sound ridiculous turn out to be true, it lends a bit of credibility to other ridiculous rumors) [for those that don't know, MissingNo is not a 'real' Pokemon- rather, it is a placeholder/error handler programmed into the game to prevent it from crashing if a battle is initiated against data that doesn't correspond to any of the real pokemon in the game- Through a series of arbitrary actions it is possible to trigger such a battle, allowing MissingNo to be fought, captured and used in battle] It's not just rumors and glitches that create this atmosphere. My whole point here is the amount of speculation these games caused simply by being what they are. People have written essays about these games. But it was the game itself that created this speculation, it spurred these rumors. Take Lavender Town, or Cinnabar Island. They are genuinely creepy areas that scare the crap out of kids, and contain subtle clues to a much darker story than is shown on the surface. Lavender town is a friggen cemetery and is the only time I recall that the series actually dealt with the death of pokemon. The music is very unsettling (and in the original Japanese, was so high-pitched it gave kids headaches, with led to it being subtly altered for the English release, which started a heap of rumors). Then there's the deal with Blue's Rattata, which is all just speculation but it's got a lot of evidence supporting it (if you have no cluewhat I'm talking about you can google it). Cinnabar Island was the birthplace of Mewtwo and contained subtle hints about his creation. The whole story is told in detail in the first movie, confirming what is only implied in the game itself. None of the newer games have done anything remotely similar to this. Red and Blue stand on their own as classics, and are great games overall and not just good Pokemon games. Bah this was a long and complicated post, no doubt I've made my share of mistakes. I probably forgot half of what I wrote already as i was writing it. I was rambling, I was ranting. :/ I'm sure there will be plenty that disagree, but ah well. It's just my opinion after all. For the record, my party in Red (currently) consists of: -Ivysaur -Dugtrio -Pidgeotto -Jolteon -Goldeen -MissingNo1 point -
