    Fan made game: LEGO Travellers

Hi Brick, welcome to the site. First off, I want to say that it's great that you are learning programming and seem to have come quite a ways. This site is a great way to get constructive criticism from individuals who are doing similar things at an equal or higher level. It's clear you have a vision but I would urge you to focus on building a solid backbone for your game rather than focusing (albiet not exclusively) on the creative side immediately. That is conceptualizing a game that would be fun and work correctly before delving straight into creating it. No doubt there are many development styles out there but from what I can see immediately the game seems to be focused on much of its visual presentation and not on its gameplay mechanics. Even the visual presentation seems to be a bit lack luster. I don't know how experienced you are so I don't know what is fair game for me to criticize or not but I will say that the graphics are - at the onset - not that appealing. The shaders you are using (or not using) aren't really doing it for me as everything seems to be lit with very flat light. You seem to be trying to mimic the style of LEGO Universe but its really not there yet, and I don't think the very non-LEGO looking building models are helping. I personally would question the wisdom of creating anything based on LU but that's probably because I was not a fan of it and prefer the more classic look of the older games. I think the biggest thing that's missing is that from what you've showed us I'm really not sure what the purpose of the game is and how that purpose is communicated via the game's elements. In an ideal world, a game's internal logic is consistant, that all of the elements (graphics, gameplay, story, etc) work together to reinforce each other and the game's overall objective and purpose. I'm not getting that here. Granted, that might be because you're still in the development phase but you've said that you're pretty far along. If I were you, I would stop work and take stock of where you wanted to be originally, where you are currently, and where you are going. I think there are some big picture questions you need to address that are weakening your project. Even if you decide that you're exactly where you want to be, I think the introspection would still be a worthwhile excercise.

New version of ROCK RAIDERS - update

As I expressed over in another topic, I'm feeling... reservations regarding the future of this new game, especially given Data Design Interactive's post-LEGO Rock Raiders reputation, and just another piece of Wii shovelware titled "Rock Raiders" would be a travesty to the original. That being said, I definitely want to see where this goes, and I do hope that in the end, by being so close to such a dedicated community during the development of this new game (especially through this topic), you can successfully recapture that lightning which made the original game so memorable and create a new game that can live up to its predecessor's legacy. It definitely won't be easy, though, but I wish you the best of luck, and again thanks for sharing this with us.

    Additional Brick Colors Mod

As you may already know, It's possible to edit the .LEB files in the PIECEDB folder to change what bricks are available in what color in any given category. (Or, by editing a small bit of binary, add additional bricks.) So for those of you who don't wish to mess with these files yourself, or if you just want a nice base for editing with some of the more common ones already there, I've compiled this little mod which will add the following bricks to your game without overriding anything: 11 new basic bricks in beige to the Johnny Thunder menu 14 new green bricks to the Veronica Voltage menu (The 12 basic brick types, plus the flag and spoiler) 1 new green brick to the Castle menu (the Castle theme flag) As for why I didn't split the green bricks up between the Standard and Racing menus, there's an unfortunate hard limit of 30 bricks per menu, forcing me to add to menus with smaller amounts of bricks. Download This is fairly basic for now, but I plan on adding additional pieces that could benefit from additional colors that I can find space for, and it's a good place to start if you want to edit these menus yourself. Remember, you can always edit these files to get any brick you want in any color temporarily, and then switch it back when you're done. I'll also look into any possibilities of getting around the limit of 30 bricks per menu, but for now, enjoy.

    Fan made game: LEGO Travellers

Hello! You may know me from the LU wiki, I am brick5492, and I am making a fan made lego game. The game is in development for a while now, and the progress is going as planned Worlds and stuff are almost done, brick build system is in the making and I am planning to release a demo before the end of the year. The game is going to be multiplayer, in the way that the player can host or join a running game from someone else. Cause I am still working hard on the multiplayer, the demo is going to be single player. As you can see it isnt ready, but its coming along The site is http://www.legotravellers.wordpress.com Hope you like it!

I got bored a while ago, and made some swords in LDD. But I'm not quite sure which one looks better.

    Rock Raiders for the IPad/Tablet?

Allow me to preface this by saying that I - in general - do not like motion or touch controls for "serious" work/play. While using iPod/ad/hone(s) (and similar devices) I have no issues because their uses are limited in scope and do not require extremely dexterious control to operate. The RTS genre does not lend itself to simplistic control. Translating any semi-complex RTS - not even considering games such as Hearts of Iron or Rebellion - to work with touch controls would be an extremely difficult task and I would wager a futile one. However, games like Civilization or Advanced Wars can be accessed by the player on an extremely simplistic level because their controls are meager to begin with and they are slow-paced. That said, I would not want to play Civ with touch controls because it wouldn't be comfortable for me. I prefer the pin-point precision of the mouse when playing strategy games. Rock Raiders is somewhere in the middle. It is neither as complex as HoI nor as simple as Advanced Wars. Could it be played with touch controls? Probably. Would I want to? No. A lot of that has to do with my personal preference but I do feel you lose a precentage of control and immersion when you remove the mouse. I don't want to be constantly flicking the screen to move around the map and perform actions. That's tedious and takes me out of the game. I would hope that if this game is eventually made and a touch control system implemented, it remains isolated to ports and no the base game, as others have mentioned has happend with Minecraft.

    Rock Raiders for the IPad/Tablet?

It's not only a matter of the console being obsolete with the release of the Wii U. At first, I was excited about the whole prospect of DDI working on a spiritual successor to LEGO Rock Raiders... but if the Wii is being considered as a format for the game... well, I hate to be blunt, but DDI hasn't exactly had the best reputation when it comes to Wii games. And that terrifies me (in a mild sense of minor terror that one would feel for something otherwise nonlethal and unimportant as a videogame loosely based off your favorite Danish toyline, as opposed to genuine terror in a life-threatening situation, which of course would be silly and inane to be feeling in this case). Do not think of me as being ungrateful for what you are doing. Despite my reservations, I still feel great anticipation towards seeing this spiritual successor, and if you can manage to catch lightning in a bottle twice, then I will be most excited indeed. With that, I wish you the best of luck. However, I just don't want to see the legacy of LEGO Rock Raiders end up as just another piece of mediocre shovelware for a console already oversaturated with mediocre shovelware, and I hope you folks at DDI can understand that.

    Rock Raiders for the IPad/Tablet?

editing because my old post was sort of snippy and it's obvious you're making it for PC. Edited parts are in bold. It shouldn't work for the touchscreen versions. Assuming this game is RTS-like, I don't see how you can get it working for touchscreen stuff well. It's irrelevant though because those handheld things are really underpowered, and seeing that you wanted this to draw influence from both LRR PC and Minecraft good luck running it without toning it down in power and content a lot, and then if you do that good luck having the PC release be any good unless it's a totally different game. Edit: Yes I know Minecraft has a phone edition too, but it's a somewhat different and more limited game. If there's going to be a handheld version that's like that then I don't care (literally, I'm not interested), I was expressing concern if the phone game was to be the same as the "main" version. I'm not even touching the Wii thing because the Wii had been "dead" since the Wii U came out in november, and even if it were still alive it's unpreferred to Sony's and Microsoft's console(s) because of that power thing. But then their controllers would not work at all with this type of game, so really it's best to focus on Computer development IMO - better controls for this kind of game, and more power for this kind of game. Edit: same as I said above, but I'm still suspicious about this one. Maybe you have something different in mind that would work and I'm wasting my time nagging at people who know what they're doing, but to be honest I'm feeling a bit suspicious since you suggested making it on a dead console.
