Wot I Fink: Video Gaming
STUDZ and 4 others reacted to McJobless for a blog entry
Original post with comments that clarify some of what I've said: http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/dg0Pw/can-we-please-have-another-industry-crash/page/31337 I don't like the gaming industry as it is. Everything sucks. AAA is less about trying to take chances on making something incredible and more about pleasing the lowest common denominator, of which many screech from the tops of mountains, belittling those who actually have a valid opinion. Publishers no longer are PUBLISHERS but instead feel as though they are the ultimate gods of gaming, purchasing out the licenses to the best gaming franchises and milking them for all their worth. DLC practices are getting worse and worse, and the push to have more "free" (Read: Missing content designed to fool the non-informed consumer) online games. Hell, the industry is pushing more and more towards complete digital, online services, believing everyone in the world to already live in the future under the benevolent rule of Skynet. The Indie market too is not doing so well, and it's oversaturated by mediocre titles by developers who don't have a passion for gaming but simply want to make a quick buck. The last console not to be produced by one of the three "mighty" titans was absolutely bollocks and showed that its creators were just as evil as the people making the other consoles. Games as good as Minecraft (in terms of what it did for indie gaming) are few and far between, and typically spawn a bazillion clones because these clone-developers believe that "if ain't broke, don't fix it" actually was supposed to be "if it ain't broke, remake the entire thing in Unity but miss everything that made the original good because we're unoriginal and we don't understand the golden era of video games." Let's Plays by Pewdiepie apparently somehow are able to warrant millions of spoiled brats supremacy of YouTube, and Kotaku can write whatever random garbage spews from their mind and there will always be people who won't bat an eyelash. Some developers are leaving the industry because they receive enough hate over tiny decisions to match the Sun, whereas other developers are complete degenerates and it takes only a tiny realisation that nobody is laughing with them for a s***storm to start. People review games by comparing them, not based on the games own merits, and people believe that all manner of "technical issues" (LEIK GUIZE ITZ LOCK'D 2 30FPS DIS R s***E) should detract from the game's overall score, when it's clear they're the only one with their problems. Console and PC wars continuing to rage on, and yet no developer wants to properly merge the gap out of fear they might actually convince gamers its okay to choose what works best for them. Ubisoft f****s PC games daily, Bethesda (generally) gives console players the cold shoulder, and Microsoft loves to screw with everybody equally. People still have it in their minds that console-exclusives are a good thing, and there are still "hardcore" gamers convinced that because a game has no more than the occasional button-click here and there, it shouldn't classify as a game. Meanwhile, "casual" gamers spend money on buying new items for Farmville or Angry Birds, items that take no more than 5 minutes to make and rake in hundreds of thousands of kilos worth of cocaine every day, giving the big publishers the incentive that suddenly all gamers are like that, so they can begin to push DLC right down the unwilling gaming public's throat. I'm not done with gaming, but I'm pissed off that we've come to this. Only a few years ago, we were still in the warm and fuzzy period of gaming where things weren't as bad. YES. Some of these problems have been a constant. But they were nowhere near as drastic as they are now. This industry used to be about put players into places they've never been before, to experience things they've never felt before. The people who worked in it did so with passion for what they did, not so they could make it rich. Publishers weren't obsessed with licenses or DLC, they just wanted to rake in some profit off the side for distributing the games, as they rightfully should. Back then, you could look inside a game store and find a huge library of amazing games, not just a few awesome titles scattered through a lot of waste. Mario changed the industry forever. We need a new Mario (NOT A SEQUEL LIKE YOU'VE BEEN DOING FOR YEARS, NINTENDO). Hate me if you will, but that's my perspective. Your move, gaming industry.5 points -

Hey all. This is my second Wipeout inspired anti-gravity racer, This was loosely based on my smaller SR1 MOC. I really like the Wipeout series of games and i just really wanted to make a bigger one so here it is. It has two air brakes on either side and two bigger ones on the back as well as one underneath it. It also has landing gear. I've put on some of the weapons on it but I couldn't fit all on. More pictures: I also made a boarding ramp for it, a bit crappy but hey I was running out of pieces at this point: And finally a picture of the pilot in it: And theres more pictures on the brickshelf page here: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=484374 Hope you like.3 points -

Hello! Have you ever wished you could read old LEGO magazines? Probably not. But I sure love to put old LEGO magazines on the internet anyway! I recently received a small collection of LEGO Adventures!, Bricks n' Pieces and LEGO World Club Magazin issues courtesy of Cyrem and jamesster. Only two of them have been made available in English in their entirety online prior to now, so I am pleased to present what I have for your viewing pleasure. As with my LEGO MANIA Magazine scans, I will be uploading these frequently, but probably not daily. LEGO Adventures! Why not? It's more fitting here than 99% of the other web sites and domain names on the internet, all having nothing to do with LEGO.2 points -

That's all well and good, but what's wrong with making a LEGO model that looks like a LEGO model because LEGO models are cool?1 point -

"How many differences can you spot on the Axle on the right?" Well for one that's Sparks and not Axle. That's an awfully big difference, isn't it? And showing Hover Scouts crossing lava? You're gonna have a lot of pissed kids when they try that one in the game and find out its a lie. Of course, that's not to say ere aren't a bunch of lies in the article about the game either. Sure, the game has all the Rock raiders in the cutscenes... But not in the actual game. Enjoy your generic raiders. The goal is to collect as many crystals as possible! Except that it's only reaching a predetermined amount of crystals, and even then only in some of the missions. Axle isn't racing that slug, they're both running from RUSHING LAVA THAT'S THREATENING TO KILL THEM. That said, the models they show you is kind of cool. The even smaller mobile laser cutter! The fabled large transport truck! A flying drill! The Town models they show you are great, too! I love that jetski, and especially the speedboat. And in the find the differences puzzle Octan dude loses to sunglasses to reveal HE HAS NO EYES HOLY BRICK.1 point -

Lol Addict bringing DF into the convo. I'm making a "Godwin's Law" for you. Lol Doc complaining about threads. Not enough for Godwin though. And I agree with half of this. The Wii U would be a better system to play on with the bonus of the tablet. I say it would be a better market too for DDI if you do it right. Too many games don't take advantage of the tablet controller and it would be best for any sensible game company to jump in on that.1 point -

Hi Brick, welcome to the site. First off, I want to say that it's great that you are learning programming and seem to have come quite a ways. This site is a great way to get constructive criticism from individuals who are doing similar things at an equal or higher level. It's clear you have a vision but I would urge you to focus on building a solid backbone for your game rather than focusing (albiet not exclusively) on the creative side immediately. That is conceptualizing a game that would be fun and work correctly before delving straight into creating it. No doubt there are many development styles out there but from what I can see immediately the game seems to be focused on much of its visual presentation and not on its gameplay mechanics. Even the visual presentation seems to be a bit lack luster. I don't know how experienced you are so I don't know what is fair game for me to criticize or not but I will say that the graphics are - at the onset - not that appealing. The shaders you are using (or not using) aren't really doing it for me as everything seems to be lit with very flat light. You seem to be trying to mimic the style of LEGO Universe but its really not there yet, and I don't think the very non-LEGO looking building models are helping. I personally would question the wisdom of creating anything based on LU but that's probably because I was not a fan of it and prefer the more classic look of the older games. I think the biggest thing that's missing is that from what you've showed us I'm really not sure what the purpose of the game is and how that purpose is communicated via the game's elements. In an ideal world, a game's internal logic is consistant, that all of the elements (graphics, gameplay, story, etc) work together to reinforce each other and the game's overall objective and purpose. I'm not getting that here. Granted, that might be because you're still in the development phase but you've said that you're pretty far along. If I were you, I would stop work and take stock of where you wanted to be originally, where you are currently, and where you are going. I think there are some big picture questions you need to address that are weakening your project. Even if you decide that you're exactly where you want to be, I think the introspection would still be a worthwhile excercise.1 point -

Rock Raiders Troubleshooting
TomTomKenobi reacted to Cyrem for a topic
Troubleshooting LEGO Rock Raiders Game Installer Not Running First try running the installing in compatibility mode for Windows 98. If it still does not work, you can still salvage your game by following this guide. "Missing d3drm.dll" Error When Running Rock Raiders Firstly you'll need to download the missing DLL here. Then place this DLL file in your installation directory (Usually "C:\Program Files\LEGO Media\Games\Rock Raiders" ) or in your C:\Windows\System\System32 folder. Game Videos Not Playing First ensure you have the game disc in the drive as the video files are on the disc. If the videos still don't play you may need to install this required codec. Music Won't Play The game is burnt like an audio CD, allowing it to be played in CD players. First ensure you have the game disc in the drive as the music files are on the disc. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for the music not to play. One of the reasons is that you have a reproduction copy which does not have the audio track on the disc, this is a common issue. Game Lag on Windows 8/10 LEGO Rock Raiders will lag in fullscreen mode when it is run on Windows 8/10. The only known solution to this issue is to run the game in windowed mode. Other solutions to try for problems Before creating a topic about your issue, please try some extra troubleshooting, such as these. Run the game with compatibility mode for Windows XP. Turn on 'Disable Visual Themes', 'Disable Desktop Composition' and 'Reduced Colour Mode' for 16bit for newer systems. Run the game in administrator mode. Run the game in windowed mode. Try the Microsoft Compatibility Toolkit. Unable to find a Solution If these solutions are unable to fix your problem, please post a topic in this forum. Please include details from the following list. Providing these details will speed up the help process. Operating System Version (e.g Windows 10) Graphics Card Model (e.g AMD Radeon R970x) Description of the issue. What you have already tried. Screenshots of the issue.1 point
