    Orr-Delta

Right. So I guess this is where quite a few of you have been waiting for. We have a big announcement for you: Today, we are releasing the very first version of Open Rock Raiders - Delta! Open Rock Raiders - Delta 0.0.1 Now I do have a few remarks to make before posting the download link. For those of you who are not interested in long stories, but want to check out what we have created instead, you can find a big download link near the bottom of the page. First of all, let's go 1 month back in time. At the time I had been trying to write an openGL renderer in C++. To summarise it; it could do its job, and GLUT helped overcome some more difficult things very quickly (for instance, it made handling keyboard events very easy), yet I was not satisfied. The setup of the renderer was that you would call functions from python that would create a mesh, and a texture group inside a mesh. You could then fill such a texture group with geometry data, and finally the renderer would produce a pretty image on screen. It was at the same time that I had gotten an exercise for one of my programming courses at the university to write a game called "sokobano". The exercise said that the the game would either need to be text-based, or 2D using images. As I had already been doing quite some openGL for ORR-D, the thought came up to make the game in 3D rather than in 2D, and see what the reaction would be from the student assistant (the one who assesses my hand-ins). The only problem was that I could not use the code I had written for ORR-D for this; the game had to be written in Java. I had seen what was possible with java in combination with openGL; I have seen some pretty amazing structures in mineCraft with still a great framerate. With a bit of digging, I found out that library that mineCraft uses is called "LWJGL". After checking it out a bit, I was quite happy with it; it was not over-simplified, but it still made it easier to do a lot of common tasks. It took me the weekend, but in the end I had a working sokoban game using openGL. Me was happy Of course you start wondering at such occasions how well it would perform. So I made a map of 100x100 tiles, and looked. The game didn't run as fast as with my default 10x10 map, but still quite allright. After doing a bit of maths, I concluded that the game was displaying 60 000 triangles, while maintaining the framerate. In comparison; a map in ORR-D with 100x100 tiles would require only 20 000 triangles. At this time I started doubting the choice for python as the language for ORR-D. Sure, Python is a great language. But it is not made for games. The thing is; python's map renderer itself was already quite slow. A 10x10 map was fine, but once it got to bite through a 100x100 map, the frame rate dropped close to the ground. And on that specific language, we would need to run an animation system, game AI, and everything else. It was altogether not convincing enough for me to keep working with it. Java on the other hand was much, much faster than python. It also took care of tasks like memory management; one of the great pains of C++. Java is also a language very close to ActionScript, which is a language I have used extensively in the past. Switching to java would also involve throwing away everything we had written up to that point. Given the amount of work me and Ramius (antillies on the forums) have put in the project, the final decision to actually stop with python an start over again in java was not easy. I had a discussion with Ramius about it, and he was naturally very sceptical about it. After an extensive discussion, we agreed to switch to java. Of course Ramius wanted to be sure that he would not be putting a lot of time and effort into something that would be thrown away later, so we agreed that I would write the engine and create an interface for him to work with, and he would start writing code from a point where he thought it was safe enough to say that the project could succeed. I had already some "engine" code laying around from the sokoban project I had done earlier. I took that as a starting point, and started to write ORR-D on top of it. From there, I have been focussing on the map parser and the renderer. Today, me and ramius can proudly announce that this map parser has been completed and almost completely functional (see details below). Ramius has already started on the GUI code, but that has not yet been included in this version of the game. So what is included in this release? The texture pack is read from an XML file that is completely customizable. This means that it is already possible to skin the game to your likings. The map reader supports all the common wall types, seams, etc. Power paths and erosion is not supported. There is a special elevation map to add "bumps" to the map. You can also use this feature to make things like deep pits . Do note that this map is grayscale only; and has therefore only 256 different levels. A final remark: the program currently has no error handling for maps that contain errors. Make sure that your map file is valid W3C XML, and that the soil map only contains valid RGB values for the various wall types. If I will find the time, I will write out some tutorials for creating a map and modding the texture pack. You can always drop me an IM on skype or a PM on the forums if you are wondering about something Have fun! Bart & Ramius Download Link to the ORR-D repository (this is NOT the same one as the repository of the python version of ORR-D!) Gallery with screenshots taken during the development ==== If you would like to reply to this release, please do so in the thread in the downloads section (under community projects). We would like to keep this thread for announcements. Thank you ====

First of all i did not forget. You are not the only one who has not been drawn, I've done less than half of all requests. You were not skipped, I simply have not gotten to yours yet. Secondly, I am not "Fushigar." I am Fushigisaur, or Fushi, Fushigi, Fush, Sushi, Jush, June, Juni, Juniper, Bug Catcher, Slug Master, or Sad Tim. All of these are acceptable names to call me. "Fushigar" is not.

    A LEGO Racers board game

Long ago when Explore became Duplo again and furry minifigures didn't exist I was drawing LEGO Racers tracks and made some sort of a board game out of them. I simply drew the outlines of the track design and divided the track in sections. Then with a pair of dice and pawns you'd play the game in turns by moving your pawn as many steps as the number you rolled with the dice. Ofcourse this simple concept wasn't very interesting, but I continued drawing more maps nonetheless, as I really enjoyed that, the same way I enjoyed playing them by myself by controlling multiple pawns. That was back in 2004/2005, and the map with drawings really starts to fall apart now. About five years later, I reviewed my work from the past and thought by myself how I can improve the boardgame and make it more fun/have players engage more in the game. So I came up with a new concept. First off, I drew a few (three) improved maps as the ones I had drawn earlier were often pretty clumsy looking. Below is an image of the general design I applied to these maps. Instead of sections, I used dots. All pawns start at the start-/finishline. From there on you roll the dice to see how many spaces you may move. The black dots are normal spaces, nothing special. If you end your turn on an S-space, then you may take the shortcut route in your next turn. If you pass the 'brick'-space, you receive a power-up (more info on this later), which you can keep as long as you desire. You cannot however receive another power-up when you already have one. Power-ups must be used at the beginning of a turn! Now the way I intended to make this boardgame more engaging than it was (or actually wasn't), every player would get a real LEGO (race)car composed of a standard chassis with 11 bricks each. See the image below for two exemplary car designs. Ofcourse any design is okay, providing it only consists of 11 independently detachable bricks (chassis not included). Now the way these cars work in the game is as follows. Whenever a power-up is used against a player he/she may lose bricks depending on the type of power-up. When a player is hit and can't take off any more bricks, that player will lose his/her car. From then on, every time he/she rolls the dice to advance, the number will be halved (round off when you end up with a decimal). Once the 'walking' player passes the purple area, he/she can rebuild the car. Players with a broken car that would still like to rebuild it may also use the rebuilding area. Since this boardgame is based on LEGO Racers 2, the power-up system is the same. So whenever you pass the 'brick'-space, you have to roll the dice again to see which type of power-up you will receive. If you roll X (or Y), you receive Z: 2 or 8: Invisibility 3 or 9: Missile 4 or 10: Tornado 5 or 11: Drill 6: Frisbee 7: Thunderbubble 12: Indestructible Brick The power-ups function as follows. The letter is the abbreviation of the power-up, the number tells how many bricks one loses if hit by the power-up: Invisibility (I 0): Lasts two turns. Every opponent the player passes when activated will lose his/her power-up and will be collected by the said player. If the player passes multiple opponents, he/she will only be able to collect the power-up from the first opponent he/she passed. The opponents will however still lose their power-up if in possession. Missile (M 3): Player chooses the opponent to hit with the missile. When hit, the opponent loses 3 bricks. Missile will last for 20 spaces only. Frisbee (F 5): The opponent hit by the frisbee will lose 5 bricks. Lasts for 15 spaces and only impacts at the first opponent it comes across. Drill (D 4): The drill lasts for 10 spaces and hits every opponent in its way, with each opponent losing 4 bricks. Tornado (T 0): Is left behind at the space the player is on at the beginning of his turn. The tornado will last for two turns. Any opponent crossing the tornade will lose his/her turn in the next round. The said opponent may however complete his/her turn. Thunderbubble (Tb varying): When activated, all opponents within a radius of 7 spaces around the player will lose bricks. Opponents in a radius of one space will lose 6 bricks, two spaces 5 bricks, etc... Opponents in a radius of 6 or 7 spaces will both lose 1 brick. Indestructible Brick (Ib 7): Every opponent on the board loses 7 bricks. Lastly, here's an image of a started game between two generic players on the Express Delivery track. I have never actually asked anyone what they think of this concept, but I dug it up from my archives and wonder if there is anyone that likes to give his/her opinion on this? Would it be something to post an image of the aforementioned clumsier drawings?

Cafeteria 1.0 BETA 7 - Launcher & Mod Loader for LRR

Cafeteria! 1.0 BETA 7 Cafeteria is a Game Launcher and Mod Loader for LEGO Rock Raiders. It allows you to play LEGO Rock Raiders mods without manual installation and also allows you to configure the various parameters of LEGO Rock Raiders/LEGO Rock Raiders Community Edition. Installation - First, download the latest version of Cafeteria at the bottom of this post. - Extract Cafeteria and all its files into the installation directory of LEGO Rock Raiders. This is usually: C:\Program Files (x86)\LEGO Media\Games\Rock Raiders - Your installation is finished. Whenever you want to play, start Cafeteria and launch the game through it instead. Requirements Most new computers already have these installed, however if you are missing one, you may get errors in the program. - .NET Framework 4.5 (Download) Installing Mods Mods come in files with the extension *.wadp. You can find mods in topics on this forum. To install a mod, simply place the WADP file inside the "Mods" directory or use the "Add Patch" button. You can confirm a mod has been installed and is valid by visiting the "Mod Manager" tab in Cafeteria where it will display. Ordering Mods Using the arrows on the interface you can move mods up and down. Mods at the end of the list are considered "low priority" and mods up the top are considered "high priority". Mods are installed in order from Low to High Priority. As some mods overlap others or must be applied after other mods, you can order them in the correct installation order. FAQ I heard this allows playing LRR in high resolutions? You did hear correctly. Old versions of Cafeteria did allow this, however this has since changed. Playing LRR in high resolution has now been moved to the Rock Raiders Community Edition project where it will be built into the game. How do I make my own Patches? Please see this topic: Patch Documentation for Cafeteria Changelog 1.0 BETA 7 Added "Addons" to Online Mod library for installing things like D3DRM. Fixed case sensitivity on CFG:Open Added Context Menu Items "Remove Patch" and "Open in File Explorer" Added "Create New Patch" under Tools. This will create a new patch with file structure under "Mods" and added it to the Mod list. 1.0 BETA 6 CFG:AddBlock will not duplicate an existing block. CFG:AddProperty will not duplicate an existing property, instead it will update an existing property. 1.0 BETA 5 Fixed encoding issues with languages other than English. 1.0 BETA 4 Renamed JMP command to CMP command Added new JMP command to simply jump to labels without compare. Added online library for mods (not much yet still adding) Mod description tooltips. Added patch log to see the last log of patch applications. Added "FileAdd" "FileRemove" "DirectoryMerge" to replace "WAD:..." equivalents. These have enhanced debugging messages. Old commands have not been removed. 1.0 BETA 3 Added variables & related commands: VAR / VAR:FromCFG / VAR:Increment / VAR:Decrement Added the ability to Jump in a script with JMP <variable> <opcode> <value> <jumplabel> Added format specified to variable output {var|D2} = 01, {var|F2} = 1.00 Added the ability to work with ANY config file, CFG, AE, PTL, OL etc. Just CFG:Open <path> and CFG:Save when done. 1.0 BETA 2 Removed case sensitivity from AddFilesFromDirectory. Added Patch Extract and ReBuild into right-click menu. Automatically saves and reloads mods before rebuilding. Misc changes. 1.0 BETA 1 Too many changes to list since 0.9.3 Download 1.0 BETA

LEGO Ninjago: Nindroids Announced For 3DS and PS Vita

Hellbent Games is back for their fourth LEGO game, and like their previous games it's a handheld exclusive - in this case, "LEGO Ninjago: Nindroids" for 3DS and PS Vita. It's a sequel to LEGO Battles: Ninjago (which was a sequel to LEGO Battles), though apparently in theming only, as it's definitely not an RTS. Not sure what to think of this game yet, but I'm glad to see Hellbent Games and LEGO are continuing their partnership. Sources: GamersHell

    Hello Y'all

Hello y'all. I've been looking around this boards, watching the insanity, and so decided I'd join. Anyway, I'm a TFOL(does this forum use that slang) and enjoy building steampunk mocs, old Lego games, interactive fiction[you know, Zork, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy(I got the Babblefish! ), Enchanter, Infidel, Beyond Zork etc.], other good RPGs, and a variety of other things. I like classic Lego, particularity Classic castle. My favorite Lego game is Lego Racers 1.(Though LR2 had some awesome stuff you could do within the limits of what you were supposed to, like battles, and beyond that, like riding a drill missile to get below the Mars Lava river). Outside of the realm of games and hobbies, I enjoy reading, stroking my chickens beard, and arguing the heck out of anything. I ramble, don't I? Well anyway, I'm here on RRU now, and I will enjoy the challenge of trying to makes things even more bizarre than they already are(bizarre is just a wonderful word? You don't need to be grandiloquent or circumloquacious to use it).

    LL-947 Space Defender

Built to replace the ageing fleet of LL-918 one-man spacecrafts, the LL-947 has 6 side mounted lasers on the wings to defend itself from the forces of Blacktron, which was a key problem with the old 918 class spacecrafts, who couldn't defend themselves if they ran into trouble. There are numerous reports that some of these have been modified by Blacktron to use against our forces, but so far there is no photographic evidence of these occurrences. So, what you're trying to say is that we're all idiots and that you're better than us at something? No. What Blaze is saying is that he has a program which can do a better job than the ones we use, and he wants to help improve our voice jobs with his better software. LEGO Awesomeness

Going on with the LEGO digital paintings, this fella has some pretty interesting Bionicle art. A unique take on the characters of each of the six original Toa. My favourite has to be Kopaka below, it is exactly how I would have pictured him. Not so sure about the other characters though, however I still love their interpretations. The aforementioned link has the rest of them, and he has a few other Bionicle art pieces lying around his gallery too. Oh, and also... Xbox One Security Backdoor Exposed (And You Won't Believe How!)

Now, I've heard of some pretty bad things about the Xbox One, but this takes the cake. Apparently, a five-year-old was able to break into his father's Xbox Live account by filling the password section with spaces. Let me repeat that. This kid spammed the spacebar to play his dad's games. So, this kid discovered the trick, and got away with it until shortly after Christmas (no idea on why it took so long for the news to pick it up). His parents (finally) realized their son was playing games he wasn't supposed to, and the father (who works in computer security) asked him how he did it. Basically, after the console is given a bad password, there's a password verification screen. Spam a bunch of spaces and you're in. Microsoft discovered this backdoor and promptly fixed it, and bestowing on the young lad four new games, $50 (likely in Xbox Live), and a year's Gold membership on Live. The boy is also mentioned on a list of security researchers in March this year. Moral of the story? "Newer" does not always mean "more secure". Philosophical & Meaningful Quotes

Similar to the existing quotes topic, except geared specifically with more meaningful quotes in mind rather than the more nonsensical and inane ones.Although there already exists a topic within which to dump things that are deemed quotes-worthy, it would be nice if the more meaningful of those quotes were condensed within one singular place wherein they're easily accessible. And just to clarify, that isn't to say the more silly quotes aren't important, because they are in that they provide humor and happiness to the forum, effectively making for a more positive community atmosphere. As such, if you have any meaningful RRU quotes, please post them here on which for people to reflect and hopefully improve themselves as people and members of both the community and society in general. Any further quotes I find and deem suitable to this topic I'll edit it into this post provided someone doesn't reply between now and then. I'll start us off with a quote of Cyrem's in reply to McJobless' "Wot I Fink: Family" blog entry: Cyrem: "Despite there being member ranks I think it is important to remember that all members are valued regardless of their rank. Every single one of you makes the community, without you(and I'm talking to everyone here) there is one less person to talk to. There are less posts/ideas/opinions and that wouldn't be enjoyable. Tensions build, stupid things get said... things you generally wouldn't have said otherwise, I'm no exception. It happens, everyone has to deal with it. Sometimes you get into an argument and say things without thinking it out, but by the time you realize this... it's too late. This is no different from most families, we all need to knock each other back in-line again once in a while, it's a good thing. We do this because we care. People just need to see it this way. Every now and then a member of the family leaves, usually a result of some argument. But arguments aren't forever, they are this little tiny thing that can occur in seconds and can somehow destroy days, months and years of work and friendship. Are you going to let something like this get in your way, or will you resolve the problem?... or even just forget it occurred? It's something to think about. In a lot of cases it's not reasonable to leave over petty disputes, after all RRU is not about two individuals, it's about everyone. A lot of these things tend to work themselves out in time... enemies become friends etc... Unfortunately some people leave before any healing can begin. " _______________________________________________________________________ Additional quotes: McJobless: But over the course of the year, I have since dulled down a lot. Also, I am sorry for over-reacting to the truth. In marching band, we had a special chain that we would bring to every competition. This chain had a link for every person it our marching band. We would pass that chain around, hold it, feel the bonds between the links, remembering the famous saying: "We are only as strong as our weakest link", and pass it on. I have 3 families. My home family, my marching family, and of course you guys, my RRU family. Each of my families work together and helps each other out, but when one member of the family doesn't work well with others, it drags the entire family to a screeching halt. I can't think of anything better to say than that. A family is not just a group of people, it is a group of friends who bond together, stay together, STAND together. Through sun and rain, a family must provide for each other in order to stay strong. I am proud to be a part of this family, and as I look ahead to my 1 year anniversary, I want to thank all of you for taking me in." Cirevam: This is the core issue with our community. Read this over a few times then look at the people who do modding research and make tools. Everyone can come up with ideas but only a few people can implement them and even fewer give us the ability to do even that. For Lego Racers it's something like THREE PEOPLE researching the game. Rock Raiders was roughly the same way on the old forum. And even when we get good ideas for mods it either takes us bloody forever or the end result is not too significant. Why? We're all lone wolves here. It doesn't take a geologist to see that. None of the community overhauls even got off the ground. A few people make one or two things, a texture or something just to act like they're interested. But the community doesn't band together because only a few of the elite have the capability to create expansive mods. But that's not the only reason, since we do have enough people to create small teams. The main reason is that we're all dicks to each other! I don't even have to point out names due to the recent topics and blog posts. And it's all avoidable. Why? Well, the shoutbox only appears on the forum index. You can click away at any time, turbo goblins, don't let the mean people get to you. You don't have to read every single blog or status update. I certainly don't. And I believe there's an Ignore Member feature if you're so easily offended by someone's words. At the end of the day, if someone here is getting on your nerves you really have to ask yourself, "why am I on this forum?" If you can't come up with a reason or if it's "forum games lol" then you might as well leave since the only thing you're contributing is anger or padding your post count. Don't bother making a goodbye topic just to come back a week later, simply ask me to ban your account and I'll do it since I really can't stand how childish some people are here. Granted, there are a lot of what most would consider children here, but that's not really the point. The mods don't have time to babysit you guys, so either get it together or pack your bags. Better yet, contribute to the forum community. I have plenty of stuff that I don't have time to do since I have a full-time job, I'm looking for a better job, and I'm looking at the process of buying a house for next year. I have maps and other simple things that I would gladly let other people handle if they were willing. Even if you yourself don't have much time, it helps. And that's what a community is about. Cyrem: "RRU was greater in it's younger days and I've had a hard time trying to find the reason it has changed over time. The reason I believe, is that back then members didn't know each other well, they didn't see each others faults, nor did they look for them. Over time, you get to know more about the people you talk to, you see their faults, you learn their opinions etc. People judge other people more often and this carries on in their future engagements with them. Eventually, you've built this wall where you dislike certain people, ignore them, hate them and hold grudges. The only solution to this issue I can see is: dropping those grudges and forgetting/ignoring their personal faults.I have said this before, only the community can make RRU a better place. It cannot be done by one person, everyone must take part."

What the hell LEGO? (4642 Fishing Boat)

Reminds me of that time I got a Dino Attack set with a T-Rex who had two left legs and only one arm. Needless to say, the store was quite happy to replace it with a kit that came with the correct limbs.
