    Mirror or Unmirror Any Track

This tutorial assumes you already know how to >access and use modded versions of the LEGO Racers game files and have downloaded WillKirkby's >LR1 Binary File Editor. As the title suggests, it is possible to mirror or unmirror any of the game's existing tracks, even the Test track. Here's how to do that. Note: All line numbers refer are based on a clean, unmodded file. Load the Binary File Editor and open MENUDATALEGORACE.RCB Press Ctrl + F and search for the keyword "k_2C" (be sure to remove the quotes!). You should end up at line 223. This is the first instance of a mirrored track (Imperial Grand Prix), as shown in the following structure. "igp2" { k_2B // Name Index (/MENUDATA/<lang>/CIRCUIT.SRF) 5 k_29 // Folder (/GAMEDATA/<this>/) "racec0r1" k_2A // Circuit ID "c3" k_28 // Position in circuit 3 k_2C // Mirrored k_2D // Theme string "pirate1" k_2E // Mascot character "GB" } As can been seen from the comments the tool adds, the keyword k_2C controls whether or not a track should be mirrored. Since mirroring occurs dynamically (as previously discovered), we can add or remove this keyword to any track (even the Test track). This permits mods such as switching up the order mirrored tracks occur, instead of a racing all six normally then all six again in mirrored mode (just as in a clean, unmodded installation). For this tutorial, we are going to set the Test track to be mirrored and remove the mirroring on the second instance of Imperial Grand Prix (IGP). Because we are already looking at the mirrored IGP structure, we will start here. Select line 223 in its entirety (including the comment) and either cut or delete it. The structure should look as follows. "igp2" { k_2B // Name Index (/MENUDATA/<lang>/CIRCUIT.SRF) 5 k_29 // Folder (/GAMEDATA/<this>/) "racec0r1" k_2A // Circuit ID "c3" k_28 // Position in circuit 3 k_2D // Theme string "pirate1" k_2E // Mascot character "GB" } Skip down to line 446. Here, you will find the Test track structure. k_27 // Track "test" { k_2B // Name Index (/MENUDATA/<lang>/CIRCUIT.SRF) 16 k_29 // Folder (/GAMEDATA/<this>/) "test" } With your cursor at the end of line 446 ("test"), press the Enter or Return >key and type k_2C. Do not surround this in quotation marks! Type it exactly as shown. The structure should now look as so (comment added for clarity). k_27 // Track "test" { k_2B // Name Index (/MENUDATA/<lang>/CIRCUIT.SRF) 16 k_29 // Folder (/GAMEDATA/<this>/) "test" k_2C // Mirrored } Save the file and load LEGO Racers. If your edits went well, the Test track should now be mirrored and the normally mirrored version of Imperial Grand Prix should no longer be mirrored! Demonstration video coming soon!

Use Any Track as the Test Track

This tutorial assumes you already know how to >access and use modded versions of the LEGO Racers game files and have downloaded WillKirkby's >LR1 Binary File Editor. As the title suggests, it is possible to use any of the game's existing tracks as the Test track. Here's how to do that. Note: All line numbers refer are based on a clean, unmodded file. Load the Binary File Editor and open MENUDATALEGORACE.RCB Scroll all the way to the bottom of the file or press Ctrl + F and search for the word "test" (with or without quotes, both will work). You should end up at line 426. The Test track's location and strings are located in this small structure. k_27 // Track "test" { k_2B // Name Index (/MENUDATA/<lang>/CIRCUIT.SRF) 16 k_29 // Folder (/GAMEDATA/<this>/) "test" } As can been seen from the comments the tool adds, the string "test" (line 447) below the k_29 keyword (line 446) controls from what folder the Test track files should be loaded from. If we were to take a quick peek at the GAMEDATA folder, we would find there is a folder that has the same name. To use any of the available tracks as the Test track, we simply need to change the string to be the same as any of the track folder names. If wanted to practice on Rocket Racer Run for example, the same code would now read as so: k_27 // Track "test" { k_2B // Name Index (/MENUDATA/<lang>/CIRCUIT.SRF) 16 k_29 // Folder (/GAMEDATA/<this>/) "racec3r0" } You can also enter "RACEC3R0" (matching the case of the folder). I have tested both and either work. It comes down to personal preference, but I lowercased the name for consistency with the rest of the file. Be sure the folder name is surrounded in a single pair of double quotation marks! Single quotation marks will crash the Binary Editor, multiple pairs will not work at all, and omitting them all together will halt LEGO Racers with an error message. Save the file and load the game. If your edit went well, you should now be able to practice on your favorite "Test" track! Demonstration video coming soon!

Things We Know About Modding LR

Here is a list of what I know is possible to do in LEGO Racers. Can Do Extract and recompile the JAM archive Roughly modify all audio Modify all textures (tracks, objects, characters, you name it!) Modify the strings Modify almost all files in a binary fashion (pain in the butt for certain things, but it is still better than nothing regardless). This includes: Visually edit Powerup Locations Record/Create Ghosts Paths Change the vertex colour on a model (even tracks) to complete white. (Will made and sent me a tool when I requested, due to vertex coloring ruining a track when I tried to texture edit it) Beat this game in one sitting (this is a joke) Cannot Do Make custom models (tracks, objects, etc). We are lacking the tool(s) to do so. Change functionality of powerups Change gravity physics (if you can, this hasn't been found yet. Friction was found, so maybe this is out there somewhere like it is in LR2.) Go past 30 bricks in the Bricks Listings Go past #(?) of minifigure pieces limit. By all means help me out with this list! I get a hunch I'm missing some things from the cannot list.

I'd honestly prefer a Racers overhaul since we haven't done one yet. But like you said, LRR is much more moddable, so that's where I'm placing my vote and my support. We need more than one insane programmer to reverse-engineer everything, but maybe this could be a good opportunity to get people interested in figuring out all of Lego Racers' formats. For now, I could at least offer a consulting role where people ask if certain ideas are possible with LRR's limitations and give a yea or nay. We had better make sure our ideas are even possible. Having to ditch half of your plan because of some bad programming practices is what led to RtPU's decline and it gutted Time Raiders.

    LEGO Magazines!

Alright so I don't have access to a proper scanner than actually works at the moment but I used a scanning app on my phone to grab all the pages of Adventures! Issue 12. I think the quality is mostly alright but some of the pages are pretty awful - like the Racers board game thing on 18-19 - but after multiple attempts I could get anything better from those. I'll try again later and replace any pages I can improve but if I can't get anything better I can always transcribe stuff for those of you who are really keen to find out what some of the blurrier text says. I should also apologise for having already completed that Loco maze and for circling some of the differences in the "spot the difference" puzzle but when I did that 14 years ago I didn't expect to be sharing this magazine with the world one day. Be thankful that I didn't scribble all over the comics because there's a lot of that to come throughout future issues. You're lucky that Issue 18 is already online because the RR comic in my copy is covered with the stickers that came with that issue Here it is anyway, Issue 12: Gallery of all pages: http://www.majhost.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=288031

    Bad Translations

Original text: "A slimy slug is invading your base!" ...35 translations later, Bing gives us: "Stryker Omar" Wanna see the path? It's pretty interesting. I love this path. "Barnacle from intruders". The word "barnacle" has now become a verb! "Hey, do you wanna barnacle from the city?" "Yes, that would be line-crazy!" "Lobster leg rank of intruders". These intruders have been now ranked Lobster Leg. Lobster Leg rank. "Invaders from the foot of lobster" "Invaders from the foot of Omar". Wait, how did "lobster" turn into "Omar"? "Omar at the foot of the Stryker" "Stryker at the foot of Omar". What, why did they just switch places?

Things We Know About Modding LR

Correct me If I'm wrong, but I believe there is also a hard limit on the number of Minifigure pieces that are selectable in driver creation, in addition to the hard limit of 30 bricks per category in the car builder. I don't remember the exact number, but I believe it's the exact number of stock pieces, meaning you can't add new ones without overwriting any.

    A TFOL's Response to Greenpeace's LEGO Petition

A TFOL's Response to Greenpeace's LEGO Petition By Brigs Generally, I don’t waste my valuable time on petitions senseless as this one. Nevertheless, this fallacious pile of KRE-O has gained considerable circulation in the LEGO Community, and thus merits a well-articulated response. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhbliUq0_r4 http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/en/ Let’s break this down piece by piece, starting with the video itself. When the video begins, you will notice the title and background music references the LEGO Movie and its incessant song, “Everything is Awesome.” This is an ironic choice for Greenpeace’s assertions, since the benevolent Octan Corporation, LEGO Town’s fictitious “Big Oil” company is portrayed in an antagonistic light in the film, and has certainly received more publicity than any Shell promotional polybag. As the video proceeds, you see the inviting Arctic animals, a fisherman, hockey players, and… Halo’s Master Chief. Following a panoramic view of the new wave of LEGO City Arctic sets, the video changes tone as the viewer first notices a Shell chemist, tanker, and finally, a menacing oil platform, recycled from a Cars 2 set, which notably had a rather preachy message about “Big Oil.” But the most infuriating and stereotypical elements of the film are yet to come. The “executive” Minifigure can be seen smoking a cigar (with a “no smoking” sticker visible behind him, no less.) At the bottom of the oil rig oozes a depressing black liquid. This “oil spill” slowly consumes the LEGO world and its inhabitants, including the distinguished Emmett and Wyldstyle, until only the Shell flag unscathed. Any objective AFOL will notice Greenpeace’s clear appeals to emotion, specifically fear for the vibrant LEGO world and anger directed at Shell and the LEGO Group’s “association.” We’re just getting started. The description contends to surpass the ludicrosity of the video itself. “We love LEGO. You love LEGO. Everyone loves LEGO. But when LEGO's halo effect is being used to sell propaganda to children, especially by an unethical corporation who are busy destroying the natural world our children will inherit, we have to do something.” Greenpeace apparently needs to check their definitions. Of course colorful plastic bricks and smiling Minifigures have a welcoming aesthetic. But these allegations of the LEGO Group propagandizing on behalf of Royal Dutch Shell plc are not only extreme, but absurd. Children playing with an oil tanker or gas station are not being brainwashed that “Big Oil” or environmental pollution is good. They are merely delivering the LEGO citizens with gas to power their trucks, spaceships, and racecars. These loaded accusations of propaganda are so laughably ironic one could easily mistake this as a work of satire; especially for a claim that can easily be thrust upon Greenpeace itself. “Children's imaginations are an unspoilt wilderness. Help us stop Shell polluting them by telling LEGO to stop selling Shell-branded bricks and kits today.” So what is the objective here? By the LEGO Group from discontinuing Shell gas stations and race cars, converting LEGO City into eco-utopia, will the Minifigures suddenly become enlightened and band together against a tyrannical CEO plotting to destroy their way of life? To quote Lord Business, “that’s just a bunch of hippy dippy baloney.” I am not here blatantly supporting Shell, or “Big Oil.” There are risks involved in any drilling operation, which can potentially be catastrophic on the ecosystem. LEGO Bricks themselves, composed of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, are partially derived from oil. The LEGO Group is renowned for its environmental awareness and responsibility, and by next decade will be completely sustained by renewable energy. The issue is not the LEGO Group, nor necessarily Shell, but Greenpeace’s exploitation of a responsible corporation and its politicization of a legitimate concern. Humans must be thoughtful stewards of the world, and potential threats to the environment merit the discussion. Of course businesses will try to make money, and in doing so may jeopardize the environment. Royal Dutch Shell has been endeavoring to create a drilling operation off of Alaska for a few years now, but has postponed until the safety of the operation is elucidated. This issue of drilling in the Arctic should be resolved between Shell and those concerned about environmental safety, but they should leave the LEGO Group out of this. If Greenpeace wants to preserve the “unspoilt” imaginations of children and leave a positive impact on our world, it can start by repudiating this political gobbledygook and withdrawing this petition on the front page of the Greenpeace website.

It's that way in the book too. There's a map of the castle's insides with the locations of various knights, bull soldiers, the king and his family + top knights, and Cedric and his main henchmen.

    Binary File Editor

Just thought I'd go over the file extensions that are still marked as unknown, because I haven't seen them discussed elsewhere. BDB = (still unknown) CMB = Chassises EVB = Events FDB = Font Database GCB = Character Builder Parts HZB = Hazzards MSB = (Menu functionality? + What images to use) PCB = Body Parts TGB = ?!? TIB = Timer (purpose? No idea) TRB = ? (Although, for each track there is are files called ENVIRON, supposedly meaning environment, and MAINTRIG, which triggers some main things (like, I see "startfin" in there))

No. It doesn't work with the silence. And I carefully followed the instructions very closely to ensure I did everything correctly. Edit: It might have to do with the Saved World file for Xalax, Just guessing. Oh and you forgot to include the Arctic saved world in the download. + I made a video explaining my problem. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoC-iFr0274 Just copy and paste the link I posted.

If we did the theme of RRU members, LR would fit well. We could use Fush's caricatures as a base for the minifigures. Out of curiosity, do the racers have "personalities" which affect their driving style (more aggressive/passive, use of powerups etc?) which we can mod? I don't have a copy of LR1 yet, but if we go for this I'll buy one ASAP.

In-game .RRB and .GHB (AI path) visualizer

Two basic tools that allows the user to visualize opponent paths and ghost paths in-game via powerbricks. Works with all files using the .RRB and .GHB syntax and will work with pre-set .RRB, pre-set .GHB and custom .GHB files. You do have to place the exact contents of a .RRB or .GHB file (as seen through the Binary File Editor) in a .txt file, for I don't know how to program it to read from the .RRB .GHB format. The enclosed readme in the download will explain more about the usage of these applications. Both applications are written in C++. Source code is included. Download including both visualizer tools: https://www.rockraidersunited.com/files/dl-r39/
