DM's LEGO Halo Ring [06/28/16: Fixed Back Design]
Lind Whisperer and 4 others reacted to Drill Master for a topic
NEW INFORMATION BELOW Hello all once again to a special project of mine that will be completed within my lifetime. If you remember, I created an LDD model of Halo, and showed it off on Skype. For those who were not on Skype at that time some odd months ago, here's a picture of it. Now I thought about this build, and yes I did make it a copypasta model for the sake of structural completion, I decided that it would be cool to be able to own this model to build in real life out of real LEGO bricks. So, I did some math and calculations on what it would take to build this model. First off, I decided to get the dimensions for one section as I would likely only be able to buy 1 section at a time. I was a bit shocked when I built an outline of a section to get an idea on the size. For 1 section, it is 48x16 studs length and width (not counting the hinge spacing on the ends), and stands 4 bricks tall (or 12 plates tall). It doesn't look or seem that big from LDD, but here is a picture of reference with my hand and a minifigure next to the section outline. Yes. It will be THAT big. I will say the size slowed me down on the idea of this project, but it's time I stop backing down just because some details are more than expected. Continuing on calculation, I measured the section in inches, x32 for the number of sections to get the circumference of the ring. Then did the complex math to find the diameter (something about C/Ï€=D ?), and converted inches to feet. The diameter for this Halo ring LEGO model is................ ~12ft long. Yep. To give you an estimate on its size, my bedroom is 15ftx11ft and 8ft tall. Without any furniture in my room, I could angle this model in a way to just barely fit. But, I seem to have a bed, dresser, piano, etc. in the way. In fact, the only place this would fit without changing the area's contents is outside, or in the 2 car garage in the backyard. Now you might ask, "Why build a model if you can't fit it in your own house?" or "What's the point? It's too big!" Well that IS the point. I've wanted to do more with LEGO, and this is my opportunity to do so. Keep in mind, I won't be building this all in one day. I'd buy it 1 section at a time with several weeks/months/maybe a year in between each section. All depends on the current events at the time. So I will have a long time before I will even need to think about space for it. There is but one other matter of size to take in account for. I'm sure you've been waiting patiently for it. Yes, I am talking about the price. Down below, as you can see, is a parts list that contains the quantity of each element, the color quantity within each element, the individual list price (LEGO's Pick-a-Brick listed price), and the total price for the quantity of each element. Down at the bottom of the list, you will see the total number of elements per section as well as the total price of each section (tax not included). So $170, not bad, right? Remember that I still have 31 more sections to buy. The TOTAL price for this entire project (again tax not included) reaches a whopping $5488.00USD for a 31136 piece model of a Halo ring. That price is what makes this a lifelong project. [06/28/16]: Price has changed to $170.20 for 958 pieces per section; $5446.40 for 30656 pieces total. I know someone might mention that the most money is going to the little 1x1 flat tiles at $67, why not trade those for larger tiles and make custom decals for it? Well, as much as I know it would look better with decals, I've never been one to actually use them on LEGO sets because after building one, I often dismantle them to build other things. The decals prevent me from doing that. Sure you can just peel them off, but there's only so many times you can do that before they wear out. This way, there is endless customization that will last longer. And when I get each section, I won't copypasta them as I did with the LDD model. I'll likely design a more sophisticated looking world to the Halo ring. Also, in case you are wondering about the stability of the completed ring when time comes to have it all together, each section has 2 holes running end to end inside them in case they need internal cable braces. I've thought a lot about this. So there you have it. This is my life long project that will be completed in the distant future. If you guys have any questions that were not covered in this novel, please leave them down below and I will answer as I see them. I really want to see what the community thinks of this, so hand me any and all feedback you've got. And, you know, if you have donations, those would help too. Thank you for your time to check this out, and I hope it will be an enjoyable experience for not only me, but everyone here! Please see the checklist below to see progress. EDIT: I forgot to give a comparison of my model with a real Halo ring. My model's diameter is 12ft. Using an official sizing guide, a Halo ring has a diameter of 32,809,920ft. I'll let you do the math. Changelog ------------------------------------------------------------- [11/25/2014] ------------ [06/28/2016] ------------ -removed 27 elements -added 12 elements -fixed ring back design to make it more accurate -Updated the Parts List Hello everyone, and welcome to the grand un-burying of this topic. I've decided to come back to this project with high hopes to acquire the needed pieces to build this giant ring. I have also made a slight change to the design. The backside of the ring sections are now more accurate to the actual ring from the game. I plan on putting aside the amount needed for one section and ordering the pieces in the near future, as well as making a video of building the section. Hope you will all enjoy! LEGO Racers Online
Ben24x7 reacted to Hoithebest for a topic
It's been a dream for all of us for a very, very long time... I'm proud to announce: LEGO Racers Online! Me and my brother have been working on this very hard for the last couple of days and the result is amazing. Please note that I'm not posting anything yet but a little teasing screenshot, but we are working REALLY hard to make something that we can all use and enjoy this game like when we we're kids! 02/08/2014: New video added. Scroll to the bottom of this post to watch it! 04/08/2014: New status update added. 20/08/2014: New status update and video added. 05/10/2014: New status update added. 12/10/2014: New status update added. 20/10/2014: New status update added. 27/10/2014: New status update added. 05/11/2014: New status update added. 16/11/2014: New status update added. Current status: Currently, the following functions are implemented and working properly: Play online with two players real-time (1 VS 1) - INCLUDING POWER-UPS! Patch the game automatically. However, we do have all the required information to drive all the opponent from within the software (tested and working). We are working on an implementation of playing against eachother with up to five other players right now. We can't say when this is finished, but we don't expect a very long time. Added 20/08/2014: Power-Ups are now working properly. This means, whenever someone uses Power-Ups, this is getting fired on your client too! Although it is now possible to patch the game automatically, this is not a perfect solution and we are working on something that makes it possible to play online "on demand". Added 05/10/2014: Although I have not been developing actively on game functions, I am now working on and completing a critical step to split the software accepting both TCP and UDP network traffic which is required for some functions, for example connecting to a game server. PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM CURRENTLY BUSY WITH SCHOOL AND I DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE TIME TO DEVELOP ON THIS PROJECT! I HOPE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THIS! The following things must be completed and working before release: Full implementation of TCP and UDP traffic; Starting a new Race; A chat function, if people are interested in this function. Added 12/10/2014: Last week I have not been developing very much and this will continue for a few more weeks due to school. The good news is that Grappigegovert has proven his immensive skills again and developed and gave me the code to disable the loading of AI paths so patching the game can be removed from the software now. Also, he created functions to start a Race from the software so the Server can tell the Clients to start a specific Race. All credits go to Grappigegovert for his massive research and developing. Added 20/10/2014: Due to school, I have not been developing actively on the online functionality again, but Grappigegovert and me made some nice improvement with the API. This API will be released in the open source (near) future and will give developers the opportunity to create mods very easy. Added 27/10/2014: Due to school, I have not been developing actively again. The good news is, the software is now fully compatible with TCP and UDP, more structured and the API has been put into a seperate project which will result in a release of the public API soon. This API will be discussed in another thread that I will make in the near future. Please note that the project is not dead and I am still developing, but unfortunately due to school I just do not have much time for this great project. Added 05/11/2014: Good news. Last week I was able to develop more actively on the software, which resulted in the possibility to start races from the Server, which brings us a step closer to the release! I will create a new video of the current progress in the near future. Also, the API is getting prepared for a release with the last bug fixes and comments above the functions. Stay tuned! Added 16/11/2014: I am currently facing problems with the starting of the game client and additional events regarding to the API. I am still not satisfied with the way the API currently works. These problems must be solved in order to continue with the online functionality. Don't think that this project doesn't gain any progress, it just takes a lot of time. Please note the following things: It's not guaranteed that this mod will be ever online for public since this project has still needs many, many development hours; The Server and Client are both only in alpha stage at this moment. We are working really hard to create something that just works and anyone would understand; It is very hard to find all the addresses and the correct pointers, so this takes a lot of time; Currently our main goal is to make everything work on a basic game copy. This means that mods are NOT SUPPORTED (YET) and will likely crash the game when used! On the bright side: We currently do have something that works and we are working so hard to make it possible for everyone to enjoy this with us. It was our dream for many years and finally we took the step to actually create something, and not just for ourselves but for everyone who just loves LEGO Racers. I will keep you guys regularly informed. Make sure you check this post at least once a week as the project is under heavy development. Special thanks: We would like to thank Grappigegovert for his great help which resulted in massive improvement of the software. Thanks to this guy, a lot of things are now working (like using Power-Ups). Videos: The following videos show a demonstration of the system in action:1 point -

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and I'm truely a LEGO fan:) Here is one of my recent work based on Marvel Super Heroes theme, and hope you guys enjoy it! For more details, please check the link below. If you like the model, please give your support. Thanks a lot! https://ideas.lego.com/projects/85922 THE STORY The project features the scene from the movie Captain America: The First Avenger. Red Skull is escaping in his flying-wing with the cosmic cube, and Captain America is chasing him, but he is losing his target. Thanks to Peggy Carter and Colonel Chester Phillips, who come with Red Skull's roadster for help! After kissing Peggy goodbye, the mighty Captain jumps onto the aircraft from the roadster and saves the day! THE FLYING-WING The flying-wing is built mainly with dark grey, light grey, black and some dark red bricks. The front cockpit can open and fit one minifig, probably Red Skull himself. The back cockpit can also open, where Red Skull place the cosmic cube. THE ROADSTER The roadster is built with black and dark red bricks, and can fit two minifigures comfortably. Peggy and Colonel Chester Phillips are driving the luxurious car, although it is Red Skull's ride. For more details of the roadster, please refer to this link (including the car model from real bricks): https://ideas.lego.c...s/83538/updates THE MINIFIGS This project includes four minifigs: Captain America, Red Skull, Peggy Carter and Colonel Chester Phillips. As for the accessories: Captain America is holding his shield; Red Skull has a big gun in one hand and the cosmic cube in the other; Peggy and the Colonel are both holding a pistol. All four minifigs have custom decals on their heads and torsos. Many thanks for viewing!1 point -

I uploaded another comic. The difference to the old ones is, that it is the first one, that I only made on the computer (no scanning of handdrawn stuff). I also found out, how to use pressure sensitivity in GIMP 2 and I took advantage of multiple layers. The result are finer lines, shadows etc. and therefore more nuanced pictures (I will try to improve the lights, shadows and textures in the next comics, because they aren't strong/good enough in my opinion). There is also another secret, that hopefully helped me to make better lines, but I won't tell it you yet^^. (Oh, and this is my 200th post).1 point -

Thu'll Number System and College Finals
Jimbob reacted to The Ace Railgun for a blog entry
Well, I finally had the time to scan what I had of the counting system for Thu'll, and it's Final exam/project time here in the US (for those at college) so i've been working on that too. For my Sound Design class we had to completely mute a clip and replace all the sound using various pre made clips and foaly clips(making our own sounds). My current timeline: (that long downward line is all sword strikes ) Which was pretty fun, then for my Lightwave 1 class we had to model and finish various objects ranging from dice to Tricycles. An unfinished version of my project: And finally I got to create a basic 1-10 counting/number system for my Thu'll language. So yeah, it's been a pretty hectic week, and having doctors appointments every week doesn't help either (Gender therapy takes forever to get through).1 point -

"Dinosaur" LEGO Hong Kong Clone... Wut?
aidenpons reacted to Drill Master for a topic
So today I was browsing the Dollar General down the road while I was waiting for my second interview (I think I might have a job soon ) and I found the small 'generic' toy isle. I say 'generic' because it's a dollar store. They don't typically sell top brands in their toy section, but rather small brands that no one has ever heard of. So here we are, looking around, loads of those cheesy plastic shotguns and combat knives, and other random odds and ends, and I see something. It looks like a LEGO set at first glance. Oh wait... No it doesn't. Here are two sets simply called 'Dinosaur' by a small company of like 10 people known as Ankyo located somewhere in Hong Kong. So, both of these sets are 3 in 1 models. With the left set, you can build the Amphibious Tanystropheus, Amphibious Chariot, or the Amphibious Bulldozer. The other set gets you the Magic Armor Stegosaurus, Magic Armor Laser Gun, or the Magic Armor Reconnaissance Aircraft. Both come with a wind up motor that moves the dinosaurs' heads back and forth. So... uh... I'm not sure what to say. Magic Armor? Amphibious Chariot? I'll just leave these here and let you guys mingle...1 point -

Only until now have I realised the lasers haven't been placed correctly on the left box; They are slightly higher up than the laser cannons themselves. But really, this doesn't look like a child's toy from what I see (and I know LEGO also appeals for Adults but do you think Adults would think twice wether or not he/she is holding a LEGO Clone set?), it either looks like a lame attempt from marketing or its to test to see if the public will by LEGO clone brand sets which are based on a theme LEGO has never attempted before. My belief is that marketing came up with this idea somewhere along the lines of this;1 point -
